How can you protect yourself from nasty narcissistic neighbors when you can't afford to move?

Nieghbors don't go away. Sometimes people are unfortunate to move next to nieghbors who are horrible to them. If they cause damage or are harrassing you, put a restraining order on them or take them to court. Document everything (names, dates, details, time, witnesses, etc) so you have it all laid out when something bad happens and you need to take legal recourse. Don't communicate with them, put up a fence if you don't have one and keep to yourself as best as you can. Good luck!

Yes. The wind can suck more heat up the chimney and suck more cold air into the house. I bet you didn't realized that a fireplace in cold weather has to draw cold air from the outside by some means into the house to feed the fireplace updraft. Go figger!

What are the basic personal safety rules when travelling or at home?

Answer

Home Security

= Basic home security tips =

Home security means security of human beings and house hold items including valuable articles. The burglars and intruders apply many tricks for intrusion in the house. Mostly these intruders make intrusion during night and in off hours of the day that is in the noon. Electronic devices like security systems, alarms, cctv cameras etc. are used for security measures. A house owner should also think about some additional protective measures that can be easily implemented by making some additions or alterations to the house and by keeping watch in surrounding area of the house.

Let us talk about protective measures to be adopted by making some changes to enhance security of the house. The following are some approaches of defensive measures. * Provide hidden locks at the gate of house

Generally we provide pad lock at the door for safety but now a day pad lock works as a signal to the intruder indicating that house owner is away. The burglars/intruders make their planning to break in the house if they see a pad lock for a few days. To avoid this, good quality hidden locks should be provided at main gate and even at internal gates too. Hidden locks are harder to break as compared to pad locks. Thanks

The main points to look after are: * Access to you (doors, windows)

* Exposure (where, when and with whom to walk or share space)

* Dangers prevention

* Values protection The main basic rules are: * Doors and windows must have locks and keys must be available only to people of your trust. At night or in areas of criminality, all windows and doors must be kept locked. Do not leave spare keys around, you can always leave a spare key with a family member or a trusted neighbor. In hotels keep a key at all times so the personnel has no way to know when you might be in. If you live alone or stay alone in a hotel, leave your television set and some lights on when you go out.

* Keep trusted company, number is the best deterrent to criminals. When you are alone keep in areas with people in sight. If you enjoy to be alone, stay in open areas where you can see anyone approaching. Do not accept strangers invitations or services if you are alone, if you decide to anyway accept an stranger's approach, spend at least the first hours in public places and use the time to become acquainted with personal details of the person. Always approach your car with full awareness of who is nearby and look inside before opening the door.

* Avoid any device in your home or room which has open flames and if you have one get used to double check it on a daily basis. Also have a secondary exit in mind for emergency cases. Keep in the speed dial of your phone the firemen, police and ambulance numbers as well as a neighbor's phone number.

* Avoid to keep values in your house or room and avoid to comment to strangers or in public places about when you receive money or about expensive devices you have purchased. When traveling remember that your passport has good value in the black market of any country, don't leave it at the reception of hotels or any other place. Carry with you a certified copy of our passport and provide that when requested. Keep your passport and values in a body pouch not in a shoulder bag or similar. There is no need to keep a paranoia or permanent worry, if it is true that there are many criminals, it is also true that it is not likely that you may be targeted if you have not made a mistake that left you exposed, the world is still yours to enjoy. These are few basic rules easy to remember, if you get used to keep these rules you will not need to worry so much about becoming a target, criminals look for the easy victim and for who make mistakes or who is at the wrong place. Keep safe!

A home invasion is basically a robbery that occurs when you and your family are at home. Since the majority of people do not arm their alarm systems when they are active in their homes, thieves or assailants know that they can take as much time as they want once they have broken into your home. Less than three Kicks and one minute is all it takes to break through the average residential door secured with a deadbolt. That is why thieves kick in doors to gain entry in more than 50% of all home burglaries. Home invasion is frightening when you consider that your family (as well as your possessions) is the target. More frightening still is the fact that occurrences of home invasions are on the rise. The FBI says every 12 seconds a home is invaded by going right through the front or back door. In 2005, law enforcement agencies reported an estimated 2,154,126 burglary offenses a 0.5-percent increase compared with 2004 data. Burglary accounted for 21.2 percent of the estimated number of property crimes committed in 2005. Of all burglary offenses in 2005, 65.8 percent were residential structures. Most (62.4 percent) of residential burglaries in 2005 for which time of occurrence was known took place during the day, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Many people believe that a home security system, with offsite monitoring, is all they need to keep their home secure.

An alarm system will not stop an intruder that has made the decision to enter your home. The national police response time for a home alarm is approximately twenty minutes…An experienced thief will be in and out of your home in three to five minutes.

Does a shop need a fire exit sign?

Yes! If there is a fire everyone will need to know where to go to get out.

Some national building, fire and life safety codes only require a fire exit sign if the shop is large enough to require more than one exit. A main entrance that is obviously and clearly identifiable (under all conditions) as an exit may also be locally exempt from additional exit signage. IBC 1003.2.10 (2000).

Which type of air pistol is best for home defense?

Air pistols are not designed for home defence. But if I had to use one it would be a multy shot C02 pellet pistol, that could fire more than one pellet without reloading. Something like a Gamo

P-25 that holds two 8 shot load on the same clip. Most all other types of air guns (Non C02) are usually single shot and require you to reload after each shot. I personally want to put as much lead at an attacker as possible without reloading each time I pull the trigger.

I suggest the Gamo

P-25 because it's a pellet pistol NOT a BB pistol. Pellets deform on impact and do more damage than a BB that doesn't deform on impact. Pellets are also more accurate than BBs.

The draw back with C02 is once you charge the pistol you can not leave it charged more that a few hours. It will eventually ruin the C02 seal and leak out.

This is what I would do. Load the pistol with pellets, Put the 12gram C02 cylinder in the loading grip. BUT do NOT charge it (Crank it down) Just leave it snug. when you feel threatened crank down the C02 and charge the pistol. It's ready to shoot.

Go out and purchase a 15 pack of C02 cylinders and practice practice practice. You should get about 50 to 60 shots from a single charged cylinder. If you want to stop in the middle of practicing it's OKAY to just unscrew the cylinder and let the gas out. C02 is non poisonous.

Also for best defence buy Hunting pellets (hollow-point)

they do more damage. At close range, say

20 feet or less a pellet can do considerable damage. Learn how to remove the clip and reverse it to load the second 8 shots.

In the USA Air guns do not require registration or a license unless you live in NYC, San Francisco or New Jersey. There may be a few other places but I only know of these.

What size ladder do you need to clear guttering and paint windows etc on a standard 2 story house?

On looking this up:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=howTo&p=BuyGuide/ChsUseLdr.html

from Lowes, but by searching for "reach", meaning climbing on the ladder to be able to clear as wide a length of guttering or paint as large an area of wall as possible.

Another problem is that length of ladder is given in size of each extension: you lose about 40cm for a two-section extension ladder.

Figure it this way. A typical newer house has 8 ft. ceilings (N. America), with perhaps 1 ft or 30cm loft space between floors. Then observe the terrain adjacent the house, and the space to the first floor. Give yourself plenty of room for error here.

To that estimated height, add about 10% for the angle that the ladder leans against the house (i.e., cosine of the angle from the house); maybe 15% if you wish to be conservative.

Now, figure how much additional ladder you want above the eave of the roof. If you expect to climb onto the roof (for cleaning or at a later date), you probably want a substantial height above the roof, such as perhaps 1/2 meter or 1 1/2 ft.

In figuring this, consider that you can always use less ladder height, down to the collapsed size. Now decide if you will be near electrical power wiring, in which case you want fiberglass, but if not, choose aluminum because it is lighter in weight.

What is the likelihood of a tempered glass sliding door imploding spontaneously without significant temperaturepressure changes between outside and inside?

What is a no monthly fee medical alert system?

A medical alert system with no monthly fee is typically a system that has a wireless pendant that can be worn around the neck. Once a button on the pendant is pressed it sends a radio frequency signal to a dialer. The dialer is connected to a telephone line. Once the dialer receives the signal it will begin dialing preprogrammed numbers. These numbers are usually to people that can be trusted to get help when the pendant is pressed. The system should also be able to call 911 directly if needed. The reason a system like this has no monthly fee is because it calls numbers directly and does not call a monitoring service that can charge up to $49 a month for service.

What different is between hazard and risk?

These words are slightly different in meaning but unfortunately the words themselves have a number of closely related meanings which make it difficult to pin down the difference. The following attempts at explaining the difference may explain.

1. A hazard is a dangerous object or situation. The danger may exist even without the intervention of human beings. In a dry year, a forest may be a fire hazard even if there are no people to start the fire.

A risk, on the other hand, is the possibility of a bad outcome. In making choices, we must assess the risks, or the possibilities of bad outcomes, and weigh them against the possibility of good outcomes.

If a course of action involves getting too close to a hazard, the risk may be too great to make the action worthwhile. If there is a store on fire, the fire is a hazard which makes the risk of being burned if you go in greater than the possibility of being able to steal the cash register.

2. Ok, a hazard is something that could go wrong. Leaving a cigarette burning next to curtains is a hazard, drinking next to electrical equipment is a hazard. A risk is normally something you do, climbing onto your roof on a windy day is a risk, starting a financial business during the credit crunch is a risk. Here "risk" means "a choice with a strong possibility of a bad outcome."

3. In AF ORM, it's hazards are things that can happen while risks tell you how bad it will be if they happen. Here "hazards" are the bad consequences and "risks" are the likelihood and seriousness of the consequences. A hazard is a condition that can impair mission accomplishment and a risk is a hazard that has been quantified by how much it affects the mission.

4. They can mean the same thing. A risk is taking a chance or a gamble on something; with the chance of losing what you are gambling. In Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, a message says, "Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath." In this sentence "hazard" means "risk"
