Where are potatoes harvested?

It depends on the region and the date of plantation.

For instance, new potatoes can be harvested as early as May if planted in February in a suitable location.

New potatoes can be harvested before the plant growth cycle is complete, so they typically take less time to grow.

Potatoes that you will keep in storage over winter need to be harvested as soon as the stems dry up, meaning that all the nutrients are now present in the potatoes.

They can be harvested from summer to late autumn, as long as there are no frosty nights yet, but always as soon as the stems are almost dry. Kept longer in the soil, they will start catching all kind of rotting bacteria from the soil.

What variables may affect the time taken to cook a potato?

Directions for cooking meat usually state the time of cooking in terms of minutes per pound. At best this can only serve as a guide, for several factors may cause variation in the length of time required to cook a piece of meat. The only way of knowing when the interior of a piece of meat has reached a definite temperature and thus a definite stage of cookery is to insert something in the center of the meat by which the interior temperature may be read. For this purpose a thermometer or a thermocouple may be used. The easiest method for household use is the insertion of a thermometer into the meat. Two types of thermometers may be used: a right-angled thermometer with the temperature scale on the horizontal arm or a very short tube-type thermometer about 6 or 8 inches long with the temperature scale on the upper half. The latter must be short to keep the top from touching the upper part of the oven, particularly the small gas ovens and many electric ovens. Thus the graduated scale is condensed, which makes it more difficult to read. The short thermometer is preferable for small roasts of meat and for meat with soft fibers. The right-angled thermometer is suitable for beef roasts, ham, leg of veal, and lamb. It is convenient for taking temperatures of custards, cakes, and other foods, for it can be supported by the horizontal arm from a shelf in the oven.

Can potato beetles be pets?

Potato beetles probably can not eat lettuce. Potato beetles evolved in the Rocky Mountains of North America. They could only live on a plant similar to a potato. When farmers began growing potatoes, they moved to potato plants. They were able to live on their original hosts as well as potato plants. In fact, potato plants provided a better place for them. So, the fact that they were unable to spread until they could move to potato plants makes it seem like it will be difficult to find somewhere else they can grow.

How many pounds of potatoes do you need to mash potatoes for 6 people?

To be safe, do your figuring in doubles, but "fudge" a little, so it's more like 1 & 1/2 to 2 per person. For baked potatoes, at least 1 per person, so make 2 per person, total 12 potatoes. You should always 1 and 1/2 or double mashed potato recipes when you aren't sure how much each person eats generally. So 12 potatoes would be 24 for mashed. In casseroles, you'd use about half to three-fourths, because the casserole has other ingredients. If sliced and browned with onion rings, at least double.

The good thing about potato dishes is most people eat it and eat more than they think they will, and with potatoes you can always use the leftovers, such as mashed potatoes for fried potato cakes.

How long does it take to bake potatoes in the oven?

This will depend on the size of the potatoes and the heat of the oven.

If you want to bake potatoes in their jackets a useful technique is to push a metal knife (It must be completely metal like a stainless steel dining knife with no bone or plastic handles) or metal skewer right through or at least into the middle of each potato - the metal will conduct the heat into the centre of the potato and this will reduce the cooking time.

If the potatoes are large you may want to halve or quarter them and place them on a baking tray. Peeling the potatoes and cutting them into smaller portions will also reduce baking time. If you pack them close together they will take longer to cook, so space them out.

Generally about 30 - 40 minutes in a moderate oven should be enough to bake a medium sized potato. Unless you have a small oven, or are baking something else in the oven at the same time, it is not a cost effective way of cooking potatoes.

How do you use a mrcoffee perfect potato appliance?

I find this a wonderful appliance. Not only does it do good potatoes but I use it for small heat ups. I cut a aluminum hotdog rack, made for camping, to fit into the bottom to keep things from burning on the bottom. I have used this like a toaster oven only smaller. It's great to heat up egg rolls, corn dogs (let the sticks stick out the holes, leftover rolls (especially Croissants). I also put a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom to save on clean ups.
