In the context of interviewing military officers for my writing of magazine articles, I've been told that I may address an officer by first name, but that it's always safest to address an officer by rank and last name, as in "Commander Davis."

Some people continue to use Jr after Sr has died, others do not. Numbering is a completely separate system and does not change when an earlier number dies. John James I is usually the father of John James II but could be an uncle or other older relative. I myself is in the US Marines and when i have had to write to a retired Officer of the US Military i was to told when you are writing to a person of which deserves great appreciations that you first state their rank and then followed by their name then you say what you need to say then when your all finished you pretty much want to say thank you for all you've done for our country and then put sincerely or something like that and then your name.

If the whole name is repeated, but it's not the son (let's say it's the grandson), then it's II ("the second") and not "junior."

If you name your son after his grandfather, the grandfather is living, and no other male in your generation or your son's has an identical name, then your son can be called Junior. I can find a sentence that has the word conscientiously in it. Which is EVERYBODY IN G.I.S CLASS 5S IS STUPID.

When addressing an envelope to the wife of a doctor who is not a doctor herself then and he is Dr. John Doe, then address the envelope to her as Mrs. John Doe or Ms. (Mrs.) Jane Doe.
