The Northern Renaissance in learning was marked by humanists such as Desiderius Erasmus. The art was influenced both by the Italian Renaissance and the printing press. Artists, such as Albrecht Durer, experienced great success from prints of biblical and allegorical subjects. Portraiture also became increasingly popular during the Northern Renaissance.

The Renaissance began during the 13th century in Italy, and the Middle Ages ended in the 14th century. They overlapped, and the transitional period was in both. Much of the Hundred Years' War happened during this time. Also, the middle class continued to rise in power, banking families were extending their wealth, the Hanseatic League was gaining power, and an ever increasing number of brewers were switching from gruit to hops to flavor their beer.

How was northern renaissance art similar to and different from the art of the Italian renaissance?
The art of the Italian and Northern Renaissance shared similar qualities, but also had its differences. As the Italian Renaissance focused more on a rebirth of classic Greco-Roman culture, the art of the time was based off of classical mythology and included famous classic philosophers. In Raphael's School of Athens, Aristotle and Plato are featured in the center of the school. On the contrary, the Northern Renaissance art was characterized by domestic interiors and portraits. Northern Renaissance artists, starting with Jan Van Eyck, began to use different mediums, such as oil paint, to create the art of the movement. The two different eras share a commonality in art through religious themes throughout the art. Christian religious stories and figures were the predominant artistic theme in both times.

No. The globe theater was destroyed in the fire of 1613. It was rebuild but closed at 1642. There is a modern globe theater reconstructed in 1997.
