What is the Russian star tattoo?

There are two different variants of this design, and the locations have quite different meanings. The star to which you are referring is an 8 pointed Nautical Compass, and the 8 points represent the 8 original families of the Vor V Zakone (Thieves in Law, a.k.a., the Russian Mafia). They can be placed on the kneecaps of any member of the organization and this denotes that you kneel to no authority. When they are placed on your epaulettes atop the pectoris's, this denotes that you are at very least a Lieutenant in the organization, but sometimes a higher ranking is required for this. There is a whole world of these tattoos, and they all have special meanings that can only be clearly read by another member of the organization or someone whom specializes in these types of tattoos, which makes the wearer an open book for people who are suspicious of others to say the least. If you are really interested in these fascinating tattoos, get a copy of the documentary "Mark of Cain" or get the volumes of the Russian Tattoo Encyclopedia. These are usually amazing works of art that are done at night by hand in cramped Russian prison cells. However! No matter how much you like a design of this type, the Russians have NO sense of humor or flattery when people who are not affiliated with them get these designs! They have been known in the past, like many other hardcore groups, to literally cut the skin from your body or to stick a hot clothing iron on the skin and will pull up the design from your body, and that's if they don't do worse.

What were the social political and economic conditions in russia before 1905?

The social, economic and political conditions in Russia before 1905 were variously beneficial and bad for the masses. 85% of Russia's population was agriculturist, far more than France or Germany with 40-50%. Industry was existent, but sporadically. Most of this was privately owned. Workers either came from villages, or migrated to cities for employment in factories. The industrial sector had its fair share of trouble with strikes in the textiles industry in 1896-97 and the metals industry in 1902.

At this time, the peasant community was deeply religious, but did not care much about the nobility. They believed that land must be divided amongst themselves. Since this was not possible due to feudal rights, the peasants had their own unique commune wherein wealth was shared out according to each family's needs.

Political parties were illegal before 1914. The Social Democratic Workers' Party (1898) was hence, illegal. Interestingly, the socialists believed that the peasants were "natural socialists" in their policy of equitable distribution of wealth. However, the Bolsheviks under Lenin wanted a disciplined group, and not farmers, in the party. While the Bolsheviks believed in controlling the number and quality of its members, the Mensheviks believed that the party should be open to all.

In the field of economic conditions, 1904 was a bad year for the workers. Due to rise in prices of essential goods, real wages decreased by 20%, leading to the famous St.Petersburg strike where 110,000 workers protested, demanding reduction in work hours and increase in wages. This strike started a series of events that are together known as the 1905 Revolution. During this revolution, there were strikes all over the country, universities closed down, and various professionals and workers established the Union of Unions, demanding the establishment of a constituent assembly.

These were the socio-economic and political conditions in pre-1905 Russia.

What are the similarities between Russian language and bulgarian language?

They are both Slavic languages and use the same alphabet, Cyrillic, which helps a lot in understanding words. Also Bulgarian is the closest language to old church slavonic, now extinct, from which a lot of the Russian language is sourced from. As an estimate, probably about 80 per cent of words in Bulgarian also exist in Russian.

In the rush to independence and during the Turkish occupation Bulgaria incorporated many Russian words into their language and bought the language even closer to Russian. The grammar and pronouncation is totally different in both languages so it is almost impossible for them to understand each other. Bulgarian pronouncation is clear and sharp, but Russian is softly spoken.
