How does water temperature affect water salinity?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Water temperature can affect water salinity by influencing the density of water. When water temperature increases, it becomes less dense, causing it to rise and potentially mix with less saline surface waters. This can lead to changes in salinity levels in different water layers.

Are fish gills sharp?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Fish gills are not sharp in the traditional sense. They are delicate structures used for extracting oxygen from water, similar to how human lungs extract oxygen from the air. However, some fish species have gill rakers, which are thin, comb-like structures that help filter food particles from the water. These gill rakers may feel slightly rough or sharp to the touch.

Why does borosil glass does not crack on heating?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Borosilicate glass has a low coefficient of thermal expansion due to the presence of boron oxide in its composition. This means that it can withstand high temperatures without cracking. The borosilicate glass molecules are more tightly packed and less prone to expansion and contraction, making it more resistant to thermal stress.

Why does sand in your aquarium turn black?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The black is Bacteria build up. This always happens in nature and should be OK provided you keep to the basic rules that follow and also have plants growing in the sand. The basic rules for successfull fishkeeping are as follows. :- 1 inch (2.25cm) of fish needs at least 1 gallon (3.78ltrs) of water. Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If you follow the above rules, feed the fish the correct diet and keep the container covered and at 75F most tropical fish will do OK. I can guarantee that if you don't keep the preceeding rules that your fish will have constant health problems and will live a considerably shorter life.

I'm sure others with more experience will expand upon this, the larger the tank the better off you'll be for salt water. Personally, 90gal, 120gal, or even 180 gal would be good. well you can use 20, or 30 thirty to quarentine before adding to a larger tank. You will find most species need at least 55 some only 30, so at least 30 No less than 55 is recommended, 1inch per gallon

What type of filter system is best for a 40 gallon saltwater aquarium?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

there are 2 types of filters for salt water tanks. The most important and must-have filter is called a "protien skimmer" This removes nitraites from your system. Nitrates are basicly wasts' from fish and other organisms. The 2nd type of filter is a hexametaphosphate crystal filter.tis filters and maintains phosphates in your system. Phosphates are chemicals such as heavy metals (iron, alkaline, magnesium, ect...). Any inorganic chemicals are concidered phosphates. Unlike nitraites, phosphates are good for your tank but a specific amounts( alkaline-8.1 Magnesium-1.2 calcium-3.6 iodine-2.5) but too high and it is not good.if you have a reef only tank with no fish you wont have to purchase a hexametaphosphate crystal filter. Instead just add trace chemicals directly into tank
