How do you change the brake light in a 2005 Subaru Outback no little doors like there used to be?

For the first time, I just had to replace the rear turn signal bulb on my 2005 Subaru Outback wagon. I ran into the same question as you. The access door that existed on earlier Subaru wagons was not helpful, as you say. Not close enough to the lamp assembly to help... I managed to download a good many pdf's of Subaru technical service manual stuff when I first bought the car. I looked up how to change the rear turn signal lamp. The documentation was a little confusing, but I managed -- after about 30 minutes of confusion -- to figure it out. There are two little black Phillips head screws that you can see in the little black panel piece between the rear door opening and the tail light assembly. I first tried removing those two screws as one would any Phillips screw: Insert Phillips, turn counterclockwise, and wait for the thing to turn its way out. This, however, did not seem to be doing anything -- the screw just turned as if it were stripped or something. I could tell from the documentation that those screws were somehow removable. The secret was this: Put a Phillips screwdriver into the screw, but put NO pressure on the screw to hold it in. If you merely turn the screwdriver counterclockwise (about 1/4 turn) WITHOUT pushing in on the screwdriver, you will see that it will turn itself out just a little. Once it starts coming out, just grab it with your fingers and pull it out. These "screws" are really just little expansion devices to keep that black panel piece in place. Anyway, remove those two screws/clips/whatever they are. At this point, you can wiggle that black piece a little, and it will come completely out. There are 3 little hidden hooks/clips holding the piece to the light assembly. The owner's manual says that you have to use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the black piece out of its clips. It tells you to cover the head of the screwdriver with tape (I guess so you won't inadvertently scratch the lens) and to put it between the light assembly and the black piece and use it to release the clips. I needed to do this, but it may be that you can release the clips merely by wiggling the piece.
The purpose of that little black piece is to cover up the REAL fasteners that hold the rear light assembly in place: two 10mm bolts. Remove those two bolts. Now comes the second piece of information that you need to know to keep from damaging your light assembly. Once you have removed those two 10mm bolts, you will notice that the light assembly stays somewhat firmly in place, as if something else had it attached to the car body. Really, there is no third bolt or anything; instead, it's like it pushes into a small track or something, and it must slide out by pulling on it exactly toward the REAR side of the car (as opposed to the SIDE of the car). In other words, stand directly BEHIND the light, grasp it, and pull it straight out the back, without bending it in any fashion toward the SIDE of the car. Turns out it comes out rather easily as long as you tug on it the right way. The rest of it is simple bulb replacement as in many other cars. Find the right bulb (7440 is the Sylvania number for the turn signal lamp, 7443 is the number for the stop/tail light lamp), and replace the bulb. The remainder is just the reverse of the disassembly. So, only two things a bit unusual: The little black Phillips "screws", and the direction to pull on the light assembly once the fasteners are removed. Good luck. BTW, my wagon has 47K miles on it and apparently needs a new hub (wheel) bearing. Do you know if anyone else out there is experiencing wheel bearing issues with the 2005 Outback models? Again, good luck.

Why isn't coolant flowing in the radiator on a 2001 subaru outback when the cap is off and the engine is running?

The question is why do you think it should? Is there an overheating problem with your Outback?

How do you change the starter on a 2001 Subaru Outback?

Starter on a Subaru is one of the easiest starter changes since it is located at the top of the engine rather than under as many vehicles have. Has been a number of years since I did one but it was not difficult, involving removing other parts, like the air induction system until you can reach the fasteners that hold the starter in place.

If you want detailed instructions you should purchase a Subaru service manual available from eBay sellers for around $10. It will be invaluable if you plan on doing maintenance on your Outback in the future. It is the first thing I buy after floor mats when I get a used car.

How do you replace the driver's side mirror on a 1996 Subaru Outback Legacy Wagon?

Replace '96 Subaru Outback Side MirrorI just did this today.

1) Remove the triangular plastic cover piece on the inside of the door directly behind the mirror. This is a snap-on piece that is held in place by three plastic tabs that are part of this piece. Start by gently prying the piece away from the door so you can see the tabs, then jiggle and pry the piece loose taking care not to snap off any of the tabs.

2) This will expose another triangular piece of plastic beneath. This piece is attached to the door and should remain in place. You will see three Phillips head screws in three recessed in holes. The lowest of the three is behind a plastic cap. To get at two of these screws, you'll have to remove, or partially detach the inside door panel and a piece of weather stripping. I was able to access the two tricky screws by removing one plastic door panel fastener and then pulling the door panel away in the area immediately adjacent to the mirror. If you're comfortable removing the entire door panel, by all means go ahead and do so, but I was reluctant to expand he scope of the project.

3) On the mirror, there are three corresponding plastic studs that receive these three screws. Once the screws are removed, the mirror will fall away. Reach inside the loosened door panel and disconnect the white heater wire connector and the larger, brownish power motor adjustment connector. This one is a little bit tricky and requires releasing the connector clip with a small screw driver.

4) Note the location of the rubber and foam gasket materials so you can get these right when you re-install the new mirror.

Good luck!

Where is the plug for trailer wiring harness on Subaru Outback 2.5i 2007?

Previous writer wrote that "t is just not the vehicle for the job". Without clarification we can not be sure what they meant. Is the 2.5 l engine capable of pulling a trailer, yes. Can you find a hitch mount for the car, yes. Can you find a wiring harness for the car, yes, again. Hopkins Mfg recommends either Kit 46255 or 46365 will work great for this application They don't have a Plug-In Simple harness for the Subaru Outback Wagon. It has to be hard wired in. In the defense of the engine, many cars of similar size or smaller haul trailers in Europe. Even Fords and GM/Opals. Size does not matter, just keep the speed reasonable and take care.

*** PREVIOUS ANSWER***

You may not find one. The subarus generally do not come with a "towing package"per say.It is just not the vehicle for the job. Unless you intend to tow a matchbox car, then you could just use the glovebox.Make sure to put the "towee"into a ziplock baggie,in case the mice decide to get in there, which they often do. Mice love to shred paper, and that is where most people keep their registrations and insurance papers.Sometimes a dirty napkin or two, from Wendy's of MickyD's.

I found this answer on another site. By the way, 2005 Outbacks DO come with a trailer hitch option!

"Yes, I found it. I would have given up were it not for Mr. Crowell's assurance that it was there. I'll try to describe the procedure I used to pinpoint and access it:

- remove the access panel on the driver's side and set aside

- note that the power point and the rubber plug below it are closed off from the small storage pocket

- remove the rubber plug (about1.25" dia)that is just below the power point

- raise the center panel that covers the spare tire

- remove the floor panel on the driver's side. Just pull it straight up. Notice that it is held by two pull-out fasteners toward the front of the panel.

- at this point, I borrowed a borescope from my mechanical inspection group. I inserted it in the hole below the power point. Eureka - I finally could see the connector laying on the bottom at the rear of the compartment. The connector was pointed to the rear of the vehicle at the end of its wire harness.

- I made a small hook from a clothes hanger. Inserting it through the rearmost slot (where the access panel attaches)near the floor, I grabbed the wire bundle just behind the connector and raised it from the bottom of the compartment.

- I then inserted the hook through the hole, grabbed the harness, and pulled it up enough to grab it with my fingers.

- I pulled the connnector out of the hole and secured it with a piece of twine to keep it from falling back in.

Good luck!

I found that this helped me on where the connector might be hiding - thank you very much -)

However I have a 2004 Outback H4 Wagon AWV (All Weather - I did not mistype -). I had to pull up the right side floor panel and remove the foam panel then remove the two plastic screw caps that hold the insulation in place, remove the insulation to reveal the wire harness in the opening. The plug was taped to the main harness bundle to hold it up and toward the front of the opening. Then all I had to do was replace all the stuff on both sides, because I sarted on the left -)

Enjoy!

How do you replace windshield wiper blades on a 2007 Subaru outback?

The 2007 Subaru Outback has the most common "hook-end" wiper arms on the front and the newer style "roc lock 3" rear wiper arm attachment. See sources and related links below for installation videos. Also, purchase the replacement blades first and there will be additional instructions/illustrations on the replacement packages. Locate and press the tab or button where the wiper blade is inserted into the hook of the wiper arm and pull wiper blade out of hook. You may have to rotate and flex the blade to make enough clearance for the hook to pass through.
