How do you tune up 2000 Subaru Outback station wagon?
There really isn't a lot to do on these engines if it is running well.
Change the spark plugs. Take a look at the spark plug wires and see if they are showing signs of age and replace if needed. Change the air filter. If you have a PCV valve or under-hood gas filter (newer ones do not) change those. Take a look at the belts on the front of the engine -- twist the belt over with your fingers and if you see any cracking replace those. Change the oil and filter regularly.
Of course the number one maintenance item is the timing belt. That should be changed every 100,000 miles or 10 years whichever comes first. Change the water pump at the same time.
Why is your 1999 subaru outback legacy using oil?
My 1999 subaru outback legacy is not using oil.
That said, a Subaru engine works much the same as every other 4-cycle internal combustion engine. There are a couple of general categories that could cause excessive oil usage and more information is necessary.
1) Define "using oil". What do you mean when you say that? Your oil usage could be within the realm of "normal".
2) You could have worn parts. How many miles on the odometer?
3) Do you ever see blue smoke coming out of the back?
4) Have you checked for leaks? Can you put a piece of clean cardboard under the engine when the car is parked? Determining location of leaks is the first step to repairing them.
5) Is there oil in the coolant recovery bottle or is the coolant clean?

How do you change the transmission fluid on a Subaru Outback 2.5L?
If you're changing the fluid in an automatic transmission, you'll have to remove the entire pan which is kind of messy so be prepared! It'll be held in place by about a dozen bolts. I usually loosen all of them a half turn and then slowly drop the pan lower in the rear so the fluid can pour out away from my head and into a catch can.
You may want to invest in a "tranny filter kit" which has a new pan gasket and filter. And keep in mind that depending on the model year of your suby, the filter can be to the side of the transmission instead of on the inside (sneaky).
If your kit came with a rubber gasket, which they usually do, don't put gasket sealer on it when you put it back together or it will seriously leak.
Your Suby Dealer can tell you what kind of fluid to put into the tranny (via the dipstick tube) and how much.
Good luck!

How do you replace Serpentine belt on a Subaru Outback?
Most cars and trucks today have what is called a serpentine belt which runs most accessories. They are very dependable and usually easy to replace. To decide if your belt needs replacing, simply look at the grooved side of the belt to see if it is cracking badly. A couple of cracks every 3 inches is normal, but if you see cracks every 1-2 inches I would recommend that you replace it. On most cars and trucks the procedure is basically the same. First off, get the correct belt by bringing your cars VIN number to the parts store(located on your cars dashboard) the parts store may need it. If there are two choices, get them both so you can complete the repair. Once you have the correct belt, take a minute to review how the belt runs across the pulleys and also check to see if your car/ truck has a underhood diagram of belt routing in case you need it. In most cases you will need a socket wrench or breaker bar with either a 3/8" and /or 1/2" head on it and possibly a short extension. Some models may require a wrench of these similar sizes. Now that you are ready to go to work, you will need to find the spring loaded tensioner which is generally located near the top of the belt path; it usually has a shinny pulley on it. Look at the tensioner and insert the tool into it and apply opposing pressure to release the belt. Now, simply install the new belt making sure it fits into the grooves on all the pulleys. Start the car to check it and you are done and you saved yourelf some money!

Where is the O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1 on a 2000 Subaru outback?
yes, it's threaded into the front of the front catalytic converter. that's bank 1 sensor 1. (bank 1 sensor 2 is threaded into the rear of the rear catalytic converter. in order for the car (more specifically the computer) to refine how well the engine will run, and also to keep the amount of pollutants headed out the tailpipe down as low as possible [especially carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx)], the computer constantly compares the two (in this case) oxygen sensor readings (while the engine & computer are running "closed loop") and alters/tweaks/maintains fuel, ignition timing, spark, cooling fans, etc., in order to maximize efficiency. i just googled "oxygen sensor info," and this is the first website i saw http://mr2.com/TEXT/O2_Sensor.html ; it might give you a little more background theory about O2 sensors and how they work, in case you're interested. my idea is that if you understand how they work, why they work, and how to test them, you won't throw away money replacing parts that don't need replacing. good luck. The 2000 Subaru Outback has 2 oxygen sensors. One is located at the front of the catatlytic converter, and the second is at the rear of the catalytic converter. My best guess is #1 is at the front, but I'm not positive here. I'm replacing both anyway as I'm at 100K miles. David
