The main fighting in Sudan has always been between the dominant Arab Muslim and the Black African christian and animist in the south. After Independence, the first civil war starting in 1955 and ending in 1972 when the south was given greater autonomy, but a second civil war broke out in 1983 mainly because of an attempt to impose Islamic Shariah Law over the whole of the Sudan until a cease fire was agreed in 2002 but before finalization of that in 2003 Black African rebels in the Darfur region in the west of Sudan started attacking government targets to press for more resources for their region and demanding an end to discrimination against Black African people. The Arab Muslim Sudanese government took severe reprisals through Arab militia known as the Janjaweed. They carried out mass executions and ethnic cleansing forcing displacement or slaughter of over two million black Africans many of whom fled across the frontier into neighboring Chad or other areas in the Sudan. The United Nations brokered a cease fire in April 2004 but this has since then been repeatedly violated, the Sudan government continuing to resist international pressure to disarm the Janjaweed and fighting keeps breaking out again.
