The problem is probably too little air vs. too much gas. The fuel injector is controlled by the ECU and injects gas at a baseline level and then adjusts the baseline depending upon sensor input, water temp, throttle position and O2. I would check vacumn ports for blockage, the throttle position modulator adjustment, idle speed adjustment and EGR operation. Get a repair manual and go through the steps.

I own a used 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara XL-7 and have been looking for a do-it -yourself Repair Manual for this vehicle for over a year. The only place I've been able to find one worth buying was from my local Suzuki Dealer for approximately $99.00. Pretty steep price, so I'm still waiting for Chilton or Haynes to produce a manual that covers my vehicle. Another alternative is to subscribe to an online service such as ALLDATA.com. They have a section for repair professionals and one for do-it-yourself vehicle owners. Cost is $24.95 for the initial vehicle and $14.95 for each vehicle therafter for one year of online access. I've heard that Chilton's also has a similar online service, but have not checked it out yet. I would still rather have a hard copy manual with lots of drawings and photos to guide me along the way. Try loosing the gas cap, sometimes the vent in the cap malfuncitons and causes a vacumm and shuts off the motor until the vacumm is relieved. If this solves your problem you need to clean or get a new gas cap.
