How do you replace 1996 Avalon water pump and timing belt?
get a chilton....it's all in there, and if you need to ask you need it. haynes is all right but chilton is mas bueno. on a brighter note it's not hard if you're good with your hands, odds are it goes something like this.
1)put front on jack stands so the frame is 1-2 feet off the ground. remove wheel and fender liner on side of belt.
2) support motor on a piece of wood using a jack, this will give you the ability of raising and lowering it as you need (NOT TOO MUCH!, also place a jcakstand at a safe point for the motor to drop to in case you jack rig malfunctions)
3) remove motor mount totally piece by piece. (this may require some dropping and lowering to accomplish)
remove timing belt cover and anything else that might be in the way of doing that (hoses, move pumps, zip tie what you need to so it stays out of the way. also the serp belt and crankpully need to go{requires a GOOD impact gun})
4 do you timing belt deal and mark everything (put motor in tdc first so as to avoid moving things once the belt is off) replace tensioner and whatever other goodies you want (pump))
5) reassemble in reverse order, TORQUE TO SPEC!
you should get a book if not for the instructions then for the torque specs. you will most likely need new motor mount bolts ~7$ and a timing belt kit, i would personally suggest the dealer kit and bolts. the water pump could be from wherever, just get a new one.
hope i helped.

there is only one sensor on the airbox. its flat on top with 2 Phillips screws holding it in place and a 5 or 6 wire plug. the other thing has vacuum hoses to it and is a switching valve. ask for the mass airflow sensor when you go to buy the part. If you still cant identify it, call the dealer, ask for the price and part number for a MAF sensor, then match that number to the one on the sensor itself.
the biggest problem I have with trying to fix a code P0171 with a MAF sensor is you could pay the $90.00 or whatever and have it not fix the problem. make sure its reading too low at idle before replacing it. check it on the data list of a scan tool, it should be between 2.5 and 3.5 gm/sec. if its lower, make sure the air snorkel between the airbox and throttle body is secure and not leaking. if that's ok replace the sensor. if its in range AFR bank 1 needs to be compared to bank 2. if its reading a higher voltage or isn't as lively at say 2500 rpm replace AFR bank 1. (its the first sensor in the exhaust by the firewall NOT THE ONE BY THE RADIATOR!
