Does a 2000 Avalon XL at 90000 miles need the timing belt checked by Toyota scheduled maintenance for 350?

Actually if you plan on keeping that car for a while you should have the belt and tensioner replaced, if it has not already been done at 60000 miles, it might prevent serious damage if it breaks later on.

How do you remove back seat on 2002 Toyota Echo?

To remove the back seat cushion of a Toyota Echo (any year) simply grasp the seat between the cushion and body of the car and give it a good hard pull straight up. You will have to do this once on each side then again for the middle back of the cushion.

How do I replace a Toyota Echo fuel pump or fuel filter?

First make sure you really need to do this job, it can take 4 hours the first time you do it. Buy a new pump and new filter, they can be had for around $30 each. The following are some notes I gathered long ago, it originally had pictures but I no longer have them. Just use the pics from the service manual (see related link).

Toyota Echo FUEL FILTER Change

The echo's fuel filter is in-conveniently placed inside the fuel tank. Fortunately, it's not to big of a deal to get to.

Tools I used: Socket set, Flat head driver, Knife, plastic, brush, towels or rags

Parts needed: new fuel filter part #23300-0A020 (around $40), pump filter (around $9) *optional: new o-rings for pump assembly

  • Start by removing the bottom cushion of the rear seat. Beneath it you'll find a metal beam across the top of the pump assembly. Unbolt it on each side and remove.
  • There is a strip of rubber protecting the wire harness that leads to the pump assembly. Peel it back and loosen the grommet underneath to give you slack while you raise the plate.
  • To raise the plate/cover use a flathead driver (or similar tool) to pry it up at the indentationshown here
  • There is a raised bump there to use for leverage.
  • When you start to raise the cover you'll find a very sticky adhesive is used. Try and keep from getting the adhesive dirty. The top of the pump assembly will probably be very dirty.
  • Disconnect the wires connectors for the pump and pressure sensor
  • Use a brush or compressed air to clean all the dirt off the top of the pump assembly. THe cleaner you get it the better your chances of keeping debrit out of the tank
  • Now you can crank the engine and let it stall to releive the pressure in the fuel line. Take the negative terminal off the battery for safety. Slide the clamp cover down off the fuel line clamp
  • Place a towel under the connection to catch the fuel left over in the line. Push in on the sides (grey part) and pull the clamp loose. (!!YOU MAY GET SOME SPRAY OF FUEL!!) keep your mouth closed and protect your eyes.
  • Have a towel ready and pull the yellow retainer for the fuel line inside the car (you may need to push it from the prongs on the other end while you pull)

Don't lose the retainer! Now you can pull the fuel line up out of the pump assembly and soak up any fuel that spills out

  • Stick the fuel line in a plastic bag and cover the plug hole with tape to keep crap out.
  • Now push in on the sides of the evap line connector and slide it off
  • Now that everything is disconnected, You take the bracket holding the pump assembly off. Use a socket wrench for these bolts( I used 5/16" socket) THey have a head for a phillips head screw driver, but if you try to use it you will strip them
  • All bolts out, remove the bracket
  • Lift the pump assembly half way out and let the fuel drain out for a minute, then flip it over and drain from the top
  • Be careful of the floaty and the pump "sock" filter and lift the assembly all the way out. Place plastice over the hole to keep anything from falling in
  • Here's a pic of the suction plate, fuel filter, level sender, and pump"sock "filter
  • Remove the floaty by unclipping it near the sender and pulling it out
  • Disconnect the wire connector
  • Use the flathead driver to to hold the release lever and slide the level sender off
  • Use the flathead driver to carefully unclip the plastic cover below the fuel pump
  • There is a grommet cushion thingy on the bottom of the pump. Remove it.
  • Disconnect the pump's wire connector
  • Pull the pump out. (if you're not changing the pump filter be careful not to damage it)
  • If you are replacing the pump filter, you'll need to remove the metal pinch locking washer and pop the filter off

*When you attach the new filter you'll need a new locking washer or re-shape the old one so it won't slide off.

  • Pull the fuel pressure regulator out
  • Use the flathed driver to disconnect the clips holding the fuel tank filter to the suction plate

*Make sure to get the O-ring at the top of the pressure regulator pipe out from the old filter if it's in there.

  • There is also a piece that the o-ring fits on. It is in the top of that pipe (in pic w/out o-ring), but it can come out. Make sure it is in there with the o-ring or you won't get any fuel pressure. ( right rebelman?)
  • Here it is all apart:
  • There it is with the new filter
  • Installation is the reverse of the removal. Make sure all the o-rings are good or replace them.
  • Push everything back in tight.
  • Lower it in carefully. Tighten the brackets screws criss-crossing evenly.
  • Connect lines. connect harnesses. Secure cover plate.
  • Connect battery. Let the key stay in the "ON" position for a few minutes before starting the engine so the fuel line gets fuel pressure then crank it. It should start in a couple tries.
  • !!!Don't forget to connect the fuel line under the hood!!!. That would be a mess and possible danger if forgotten

Change belt Toyota Echo 2001?

Replacing (or tightening) the main drive belt is very easy, you will need a 12mm socket wrench and a 14mm open end wrench. Loosen (do not remove) the two bolts above the alternator that are attached to the metal bracket that allow the alternator to slide (the alternator is attached to the topmost pulley that the drive belt touches, it is at the top front passenger side of the engine compartment). There is a 3rd bolt below the alternator, slightly difficult to see, loosen it using the 14mm wrench, it is often difficult to turn, I recommend penetrating oil and a breaker bar, you only need to turn it a little bit to allow the alternator to pivot. Once all three bolts are loose, you can easily rock the alternator back and forth (same procedure is used to tighten the drive belt). You want to push the alternator back to remove the belt. After installing a new belt (or to tighten an existing belt) you need to pull the alternator toward the front of the car as far as possible. The best way to do this is by putting a pry bar on top of and slightly behind the alternator and pushing up toward the windshield while using the engine as a pivot - this gives you plenty of leverage and allows you to pull the alternator forward. While you are prying, you can tighten the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket using your left hand as you brace the pry bar with your right hand, to hold it all in place.

When do you replace the timing chain on 2000 Toyota Echo?

There is no defined service interval for the timing chain. If it is making a lot of noise or you are getting timing related check engine light errors, you should replace it. People have driven over 400,000 miles on the original chain without any problems.

2001 Toyota Echo that will start regularly and than about every 4-weeks it won't start you have had it in three shops and they can't find anything wrong It's almost like an intermitent short?

You didn't provide enough information to adequately answer the question. What exactly did you do to get it to start after those times when it would not start? What happens when you try to start it but it does not start? Does the starter motor turn? Does it do absolutely nothing? If the engine is turning over but not starting, it could be a problem with the fuel injectors or fuel line or even the spark plugs - you might need to change the fuel filter, its very cheap and easy to change the spark plugs.

Sometimes you can overcome this problem (engine turning over but not starting) by pushing the gas pedal all the way down to the floor just BEFORE trying to start the car (hold it down as you try to start the car).

If the engine is not turning over at all, its probably an electrical problem. The most obvious thing would be a dead battery (this can be intermittent depending on conditions). It could also be a short of some kind. I think there was also a safety recall related to the starter, so if you have not had all the safety recall work done go get it done. The dealer can tell you what recalls apply to your car and if they have been done or not, its free, so make sure you do this either way if you haven't already because there's a relatively recent recall I know applies to your model that might be connected - this is the crank position sensor recall which can cause the engine to stall:

These symptoms are very similar to the cause of the Toyota recall - NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 06V266000. If you haven't responded to the recall notice, perhaps that's the cause.

2001 TOYOTA ECHO ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING Recall Date:07/19/2006

Summary:

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER MOLDING OF THE RESIN BODY OF THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENOR INSTALLED ON THE ENGINE BLOCK, ENGINE OIL MAY PENETRATE THE SEAL AND ENTER THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR. THE WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR MAY NOT BE SUFFICIENTLY ATTACHED TO THE LOCKING TAB OF THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR.

Consequence:

ENGINE OIL INSIDE THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR COULD CAUSE EXPANSION DUE TO THE HEAT OF THE ENGINE AND COULD DEFORM THE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR. THE CONNECTOR MAY BECOME DISCONNECTED, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING AND NOT BE ABLE TO BE RESTARTED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 26, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Potential Units Affected: 34771

Why do you smell gas fumes in your 2003 Toyota Echo when you first start up?

If you are smelling gas, it means the engine is getting incomplete combustion, the most common cause of this is a spark plug that is starting to go (maybe it has carbon deposits on it). You could try replacing them, its inexpensive and pretty easy to do yourself.

How remove rear seat in Toyota Echo?

Its easy, grab the front part of the seat cushion, pull it straight up, there are two clips, one on each side, that will unclip without breaking, when you pull up. Then there is one loop at the back of the cushion that must be pulled forward and slightly up, this part can be a bit challenging, but with enough force it will slide off. It may help to squeeze your hand back to the loop and pull from there, if your rear seats fold down, that can also help.

Getting it back on is easier than removal.

Once the seat is removed, you will have access to the fuel tank (from above) where the fuel pump and filter are located. If you are changing the filter and pump, be extra careful to install all rubber o-rings or the job will fail. The shop manual says you should replace them, so that is recommended, but you can carefully remove them from the old and reuse if you do not have replacements.

Where is the fuel filter located on a 2003 Toyota Echo and how do you change it?

Inside the fuel tank. You will need a shop manual to change it, but the basic steps are to remove the back seat cushion, open the panel underneath the seat, disconnect the wiring, pull out the pump housing which is also the filter housing, if you are going to all the trouble anyway, I would replace the pump at the same time, both items can be purchased for around $20. You should order new o-rings as well although I have reused them.
