Why did general Sherman and general Grant want to wage a total war?

Sherman used total war tactics because it broke down the society of the war, it also destroyed the economy and helped bring the war to and end. Sherman pretty much said, don't mess with the union.

Sherman knew that the soldiers received support and encouragement from the civilians back at home. The Confederates could go on fighting as long as they received food and supplies from those back at home. He wanted to destroy the will to fight for both the soldiers and the civilians. Soldiers did not want to fight if they were worried that their homes would be destroyed or their families were suffering.

What general led the third army into Paris to liberate the city from German occupation?

Without the Allied invasion in June 1944 there would have been no liberation, so credit must go to the supreme commander of the Allied armies, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Commanders in the field, such as Montgomery, Bradley, Patton and others also deserve mention.

How did Marius changes to the military change Rome?

The Marian reform (170 BC) allowed the propertyless to join the army. Previously, only people with a property value above a certain threshold were drafted. This was because the individual had to provide and pay for his military equipment and only those who could afford this were drafted. Marius made the state provide and pay for the equipment of soldiers and abolished conscription, making joining the army voluntary. The poor flocked to the army because it gave them a career and pay that kept them going for 16 years and at the end of the service they would get a honestamissio. This was a certificate which sectioned the legal end of the service and granted the retiring solder either a lump sum (numnaria missio) or a plot of land in the Roman colonies (settlements) in the conquered areas (agraria missio). This was also given to soldiers who were discharged early due to injury or illness (gratiosa missio). Military service was increased to 20 years by Caesar and to 25 years by Augustus.

Marius also did away with the military formation of the maniples and replaced it with the cohorts.

With new genetic matching techniques, it is today sometimes possible to tell whose remains are there, and it wasn't when they were buried.

What is the highest pt score ever recorded in the us army?

A Fort Jackson Soldier earned himself a 402 by doing the following. 132 push-ups in two minutes, 114 sit-ups in two minutes and an 11-minute, 53-second 2-mile run

That's nothing...I was our class PT Officer while at FAOBC at Ft. Sill in the summer of 2004 and an active army soldier in our class--don't recall his name (African-American, mid thirties--some one will know his name...) scored a 409--and 309 points of that were on the first two events (something like 140 push-ups and 123 sit-ups...) and they were ALL completely to standard...sucks when my own 364 was FIFTH in the battery...and who says the infantry is where all the hard core pt types go...

Well, great job by these guys. I am 42 years old and I just got a 405 on the extended scale for my unit, DSTB 1st armored Division. its good to know that we still have some really awesome fit soldiers out there.

What is a word for a low rank soldier in the army?

The lowest rank in the US Army for an officer is Second Lieutenant. Then, First Lieutenant. It is important to note that even a Second Lieutenant out ranks many of the most senior non-officers (or enlisted men).

In the UK, there is no such thing as a first lieutenant, just lieutenant. Any officer will still outrank any NCO.

Which military units received the Presidential Unit Citation during Desert Storm?

The Combat Infantryman Badge (C.I.B.) is awarded to individuals, not to units. The criteria for this award is that the person must have served 60days or more in combat with a MOS (Military Occupation Specialty) designated as infantry. It has been awarded from WW@ till present. If you see this medal on a person's uniform, respect him/her.

The badge is a blue rectangle with a musket inset and surrounded by a laurel leaf.

The information above is incorrect. The C.I.B is awarded only to Infantrymen and SF that have met the requirements. Women are not allowed in the Infantry and cannot receive a C.I.B. and never have been able to. Only individuals with the 11B (Infantry) and Special Forces MOS can receive the C.I.B.

Also, the criteria to receive the C.I.B has become much stricter since Desert Storm and is no longer "blanket awarded" like it was in Desert Storm. No disrespect to Desert Storm veterans. Hooah!

What army was colin Powell in?

No - Powell, like all 4-Star rank officers, generally retire after their assignments, both due to military regulations concerning forced retirements at age 55, and the fact that 4-Star ranks are a function of the position the hold. After being relieved, they either retire or resume duty at their previous former rank (usually 2 or 3 Star ranks), unless an appointed assignment keeps them on active service past that point (e.g., Powell retained his Army status while serving as National Security Advisor, though he was 49 at the time).

The only exception to those rules is if the individual is granted 5-Star status (in the Army's case, General of the Army), in which case the person is granted full status and benefits of an active duty officer until they pass away. The last such person to hold the title was General Omar Bradley.

What is a navy signalman third class?

As a side note, the rating of Signalman (SM) was merged into Quartermasters (QM) in 2003.

In the US Army why does the junior enlisted stand to the left of the NCO?
