Wheel Alignment and Balancing

Wheel alignment is the adjustment of the wheels’ angles so that they would be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the road. Wheel balancing, on the other hand, is the checking of a heavy spot on the wheels.

Will 20 inch rims fit on a 2000 Grand Am?

there is only one way to make them fit on OE struts you will need at least a 35 offset on 8.5X 20, the ideal will be 30 front and rear but in tyres just have une option 245'30/20 nitto tyres if you put more than 30 will rub on strut base on the rear, the tire is a little thin but with a eibach pro street set will look great, I allready have this on my car

Can a strut cause a car to be out of alignment?

Yes, if a strut is bent then the alignment can certainly be off. Struts wear down much like the shock absorbers of a vehicle. On the front struts, they assist in the steering, and often times the round bearings become squared up, which can cause you to have to physically turn the steering wheel to get the wheels back to center. Also, there is a hard rubber in the middle of the strut, and bolts that hold the strut in place. These bolts can rust through, or even the center metal column of the strut can completely rust out, depending on how much salt your vehicle encounters during winters or if you live near the oceans/Gulf coast. It is important to consider replacing the struts, as they are critically to safe and proper steerage.

Is bad cv joint dangerous to drive?

Yes. What usually happens is the neoprene boot that covers the joint wears out and breaks. This allows contaminants to enter the joint and grease to be washed away. The CV joint's days are numbered after this happens. You have a limited amount of time to get it fixed before it fails. If it does fail, it is a safety issue. Not only will it cause severe damage to your car, but it could cause a serious accident.

Why wider tires are more efficient than narrower tires at normal speed?

Your question makes the assumption that the question is true. Wider tires are not more efficient than narrow tires at normal speed in all conditions. Wider tires do provide more traction and stopping power on dry or wet pavement as they have more tread contacting the road. But a wide tire that is worn also has a higher tendency to hydroplane on a wet road than a narrow tire. In snowy conditions a narrower tire is almost always a better choice. Wide tires tend to float over the snow instead of digging in and they usually provide less traction. Wide tires also may provide less fuel economy than a narrow tire. It depends on many factors.

What tire can I put on rims 15 inch 8 inch wide?

A 255/60 looks pretty good on 8". I've used 275 before but that's about the limit. Go to an online tire dealer like tire rack. Put in some figures for tires. Click on the specifications for that tire. It will tell you the recommended wheel width.

What causes steering wheel to vibrate?

Do you need to do a wheel alignment for winter tires if you have already done a wheel alignment on your regular tires?

it will change a little from tread height but typically no even low or over inflated tires can change align angles but if it does not pull to one side or cause irregular tire wear who cares.

Why does the driver's side front wheel squeak when you're driving and immediately stop when you brake?

Because your brakes, when applied, "straiten" the rotor (disk) from a cockeyed angle. To put it simply, your wheel bearings are worn and while driving, the rotor, wheel and tire are at a slight angle. The "wear indicators" (a small piece of metal attached to the pads on the top) built into the brake pads are temporarily rubbing against the rotor. When you apply the brake, it temporarily returns the group back to where is should be as if it were new, stopping the indicators from touching the rotor.

Thought i should add that if your wheel stops squeaking when you depress the pedal it is usually a sign of ball-bearing wear. The wheel will squeak through braking if the brakes are done, or worn.

How do you replace wheel nut studs?

See the attached links for some good instructions on how to replace the wheel studs.

It generally breaks down into a few steps:

1) get the right tools together (and the replacement stud if you know the size)

2) jack up the car and remove the wheel

3) remove the brakes

4) knock out the stud to be replaced.

(if you didn't get a replacement stud before you started, take the stud you removed with you to the auto-parts store to get it matched up to what you need)

5) Insert the new stud

6) screw a nut onto the stud and tighten it until the new stud is seated

7) reinstall your brakes and put your wheel back on

Can you change a tire if the rim is welded on?

If the rim is welded to the tire, yes. You can change it, but you have to replace both the rim and the tire which will cost a lot.

If the rim is welded to the vehicle itself, no. You cannot change it.

In either case, having a welded rim is technically illegal in the US if you drive it on the road. If you don't, then it's not a problem

What are the causes of excessive tire wear?

Can be incorrect alignment, bad lower ball joint, badly adjusted steering,or wrong pressures.
