If you are noticing any uneven wear on outer edges or center of tread even though you have been diligent in keeping air pressures correct and have not hit a curb with any force or found a mega pothole. Also good idea before purchasing any new set of tires

Depends on when you had your last alignment and the condition of the tires you removed. It they were wearing perfectly even then you may not need an alignment. If you have not had an alignment in the last 36,000 miles you may very well need one. Judgment call on your part based on the evidence.

Is balancing tires part of car alignment?
It is not included in the cost of an alignment. However, it would be a good idea to get the tires balanced at the same time. This would maximize the ride comfort, and minimize the tire wear, which is what you want.
My 2001 is doing the same thing. I have talked to hundreds of Sport Trac owners and almost all of them have the same problem. It is something in the front end that makes them feather. Ford will not admit to a problem.
I stoped rotating the tires. Cross rotating helps them wear the other direction.
Why would a car make a brushing or flapping noise from front left tire while driving?
Well, I'm not sure what you mean by a brushing/flapping sound but if you mean it kind of sounds like the whirring of a washing machine, check your lug nuts! it was happening to me for a while and 3/5 of my lug nuts cracked off in my hand!

If you feel any vibration or shimmy in the steering wheel or if you feel the same things in the vehicle you have a tire out of balance. As you need to rotate your tires at least every 10,000 miles that is a good time to have the tire balance checked.

What happens if a steering rod is broken?
There are usually two threaded greasable joints at each end of a steering rod. If the rod is strait and not bent or cracked, then adding new joints at the end of the steering rod should put it back in business. If the rod it's self is messed up then you'll have to look for another.

Only the toe is adjustable in the front of any 2002 Passat. Caster and Camber are not adjustable, if one side is off the only thing you can do is shift the entire subframe.
There are no adjustments in the rear of a front wheel drive Passat. All wheel drive (4Motion) Passats have toe adjustments in the rear as well. They may have rear camber adjustments.

What are the symptoms of a bad wheel bearing?
Yes if your lucky, should make a grinding or screeling sound. If you suspect a bad
wheel bering I urge you to take it to your tire shop Immediatly as my left front T&C wheel was making noise and sounded like it was dragging?
The Result of my neglect the right front wheel berings frose up and the lug nuts rip right off and the tire went flying into the woods! Fourtunantly I was only doing 40 mph and I was in the left lane. SO VERY VERY LUCKY!
I was only 3 miles from a tires store, found the Wheel and they put it all back together for only $385 and $400 in damge to the my right front fender!
This is very serious take it to you Tire store or dealer now!
A bad wheel bearing can cause a grinding or roaring noise. The wheel could be loose causing a front end shake. Left unrepaired the bearing will eventually brake possibly causing an accident.
A bad wheel bearing usually causes the car to make a "crunching" sound when you are driving but especially when the brakes are applied. If in doubt have the brakes checked and your mechanic should find it. It is dangerous to let this go so get it fixed.
Raise the vehicle off the ground and check for play by applying hands to the front tires at 3 oclock and 9 oclock and push back and forth checking for play do the same at 12 o clock and 6 oclock both sides. without jacking the car road test vehicle with radio off etc for quiet, get on a lonely no traveled road or parking lot, at a steady 30 mph take a right turn then a left turn...listen for wheel bearing noise on these turns, a grinding sound, if it gets loud while turning to the right its the right bearing, same way test the left side.
1. Raise the car or just one corner at a time with a jack and place a suitable jack stand under the car in a designated area of the frame for supporting jack stands, this way you don't loose your hand or arm if the regular jack collapses.
2. Firmly grab the top and bottom of the tire that is raised and test to see if if the wheel wiggles up and down at all.
3. Lower car to the ground. Go to each wheel and repeat step 1-2-3. If the wheel wiggles then the bearing is bad.
You will most normally hear a "howling" noise from your wheel when you're driving.
Jack up the truck on the suspected wheel. Grab the wheel and pull it back and forth, side to side. If the wheel bearing is bad, you'll feel a little "play" in the wheel.
This also the method used to determine bad tie rods and control arms.
How much does it cost to mount and balance a tire?
If you purchase the tire(s) at the same place you mount & balance them, it should be no more than $10 per tire (I even remember Costco charging $5 a few months ago). However, if you go to a gas station or independent auto repair facility it can cost up to $20 per tire. If you pay more than $20 per tire, you've paid too much.
