Why invented hybrid car?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hybrids are better for the environment. They save oil and they save the environment tons of greenhouse gas. I guess they were invented for people who wanted a cleaner Earth.

They are more of a sales gimmick then a product that us pro environment. There is a great deal of extra energy and really nasty chemicals that go into the making of a hybrid that are not used as extensively in a conventional auto.

The mileage is slightly better and safety is not that much lower. They definitely make people "feel" better. Many people that buy hybrids enjoy that feeling.

While environmentally they are probably slightly worse then a conventional auto of the same size they do save a small amount of fuel. That savings does equate to a slight reduction in foreign oil use.

The first answerer here has a great name for environmentally friendly autos. Get a minicooper. They are MUCH better for the environment then any Hybrid!

What is the similarities between gasoline powered cars and hybrid cars?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Apart from the power train there is almost no difference whatsoever. They all have a frame or chassis, 4 wheels, suspension and other running gear, there might be small differences to accommodate the extra power source and supply (i.e. batteries, fuel tank, motors, etc.) but nothing significant. Hybrid cars are an engineering exercise on packaging, it is difficult to fit 2 sufficiently powerful engines in a car and their fuel supplies without making the car drasticlly bigger and heavier than a comparable single power source car.
Both use internal combustion engines that use gasoline. Both use a transmission to maximize ratio of rpm and speed. Both are equipped with internal climate control mechanisms.

Can you convert a provisional Irish driving license to a UK provisional license?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No you need to go to your local department of licensing and apply for a new license in which you will need to retake your test. This is mainly due to the fact that our laws are not exactly the same.

How do hybrid cars reduce greenhouse gases?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It doesn't reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It reduces the amount of gasoline your car burns because there are more, "miles to the gallon," and therefore reduces the amount of carbon dioxide your car produces.

Can you use the gas from a fart to power a car?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, but ... and there is always a Butt:

You would need a lot of them to actually move the car.

They use a lot more gas than you can produce in any given time.

Why are hybrid vehicles good for the earth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hybrids probably have a very slight negative impact when compared to automobiles of similar size. They are far more complicated machines which will cost in terms of dollars and pollution. They are going to cost more to maintain and will probably not last as long this increasing their pollution footprint.

The hybrids shine in that they get about 10% (or more) better mileage then their non hybrid counterparts. This does reduce dependence on fossil fuels at the site of the automobile and increases the dependence on fuels at other places.

The two main points for buying a hybrid include "feeling good" about the environmental impact and a decrease in dependence in foreign oil. As far as environment, at best they are neutral.

Is there any danger in using hydrogen as fuel in cars?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Hydrogen tanks on the few experimental cars that are using the fuel tend to keep the fuel tank above the passenger compartment. Should a rupture occur in the tank, fuel would float away and above the problem. This makes hydrogen a fairly safe fuel.

What company make Hybrid cars?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

KIA Optima makes Hybrid and so does Sonata
It would probably be easier to answer the question if it were reworded "What are companies that don't sell hybrid cars?" Here is a list of many of the car companies who offer hybrid cars and trucks along with some of their models:

BMW - Active Hybrid5

Buick - Lacrosse eAssist Hybrid

Cadillac - Escalade Hybrid

Chevrolet - Tahoe hybrid, Silverado hybrid pickup

Ford - Fusion, Escape and C-Max Hybrids

GMC - Yukon Hybrid SUV

Honda - Civic Hybrid and CR-Z Hybrid

Hyundai - Sonata Hybrid

Infinity - M35h Hybrid

Lexus - LS 600hL Hybrid

Lincoln - MKZ Hybrid

Mazda - CX-S SUV Hybrid

Mercedes - S400 BlueHybrid

Nissan - Altima Hybrid

Porche - Panamera S Hybrid

Toyota - Prius and Camry hybrids, Highlander Hybrid SUV

Volkswaggon - Touareg Hybrid

This is not even close to the full list of manufacturers or hybrid cars, SUVs and pickups that are offered. Hybrid cars are very popular.

Do hybrid cars make pollution?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A car's greatest pollution creating point is during construction. The second greatest portion of a car's pollution comes from the destruction of the car.

Hybrid cars are built and will be destroyed at some point. Furthermore they create pollution when they move, the about the same pollution as a conventional car.

They do save about 10% in fuel economy, but create more pollution during the construction due to the extra electronics and batteries.

The premature destruction of a conventional car to allow room for the purchase of a hybrid could mean that the individual increased the amount of pollution to purchase the car.

What are the components of a hybrid vehicle?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A hybrid vehicle is very similar to an ordinary gasoline powered vehicle. The distinguishing factor is that a hybrid car uses an electric motor alongside the ordinary engine to improve gas mileage, or in the case of the Toyota Prius, power the car solely by electricity when driving under 30 MPH.

What is an example of hybridization?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

methane is the simplist example of hybridization.

hybridization is basically exciting electrons so that it can bond with other elements.

methane is CH4. tetrahederal shape, sp3 hybridization because it's all single bonds.

when you excite the 2s orbital, you leave one electron in that orbital and bring it up to the 2p orbital, namely the 2pz, and then have the four hydrogens share electrons with the unfilled orbitals.

Can the Hybrid be operated without the batterys?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Some can, some can't.

In the system used by Honda if the hybrid battery dies the car will still run fine as an ordinary gasoline powered car, but acceleration will be a little weak. In the system used by Toyota as the transmission is electric if the hybrid battery dies the car can not move.

How are Plugged In Hybrid good for the environment?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because there using electricity instead of oil.

Electricity can come from many sources- Solar, Wind, Water to name just a few and those are a lot less polluting than Oil. (untrue)

Above is the common misconception. An electric car runs off of a plug and can get a few dozen mile trip in each day, with enough batteries. These cars do help to some slight degree with environmental issues, but are not hybrids.

Hybrids are autos that run from two fuel sources. Normally, production autos use gas and electric as their two fuels. Graders and construction equipment can be hybrids using diesel and gas.

Hybrids do nothing in terms of positive impact on the environment, but do help slightly with our dependence issue on foreign oil. It is quite possible that hybrids are worse for the environment then conventional autos of the same size due to their shorter life span and the wildly bad chemicals used in their production.

Batteries are never an issue for these auto's as the lead and plastic is recycled. The issue is the gases and chemicals used to make the extra electrical components.

How are hybrids made?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

As the name sounds a hybrid is a mix of two different types of vehicles, your standard gas engine and the electric car. So in a sense you have an small gasoline motor and another electric motor that run the transmission. The electric motor runs off of battery storage, there are more batteries than just the one in standard gasoline vehicles. In order to keep these batteries charged there is contraption ( the technical name escapes me ) that is attached to the braking system that converts the stopping motion of the car to energy for the batteries. The electric motor will run the vehicle in slow speed scenarios and the gasoline motor will run in the higher speed scenarios.
