The homes themselves are not so fragile, as the method of construction matters, not just the materials. The tornadoes that destroy homes in the Midwest are also easily capable of destroying brick homes as well. Even then, only a small percentage of homes, even in Tornado Alley, are ever hit by a significant tornado. Contrary to popular belief, most tornadoes do little more than break windows and peel roof tiles.
That said, many houses are not built as well as they should be. This is largely due to construction companies wanting to cut corners and build houses cheaply. The people buying the houses are not necessarily informed of structural deficiencies.
Gothic architecture is above all church architecture (of the period c. 1180-1450 or slightly later). It is characterized by large windows - often with stained glass, and by strong load-bearing pointed arches. In order to allow for large windows, much of the load was transferred to flying buttresses. Later, some features were adopted in royal palaces and in some castles. The style developed in nothern France (and possibly also Canterbury) towards the end of the 1100s. It underwent several changes, and in the late medieval period, it became very ornate and flamboyant. Outstanding examples include: * St Denis, Paris * Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris * Rheims Cathedral, NE France * Salisbury Cathdral, England * Divinity School, Oxford, England * Parts of Prague Castle, Czech Republic

What type of architectural training did Richard buckminster fuller receive?
Buckminster Fuller had very little Architectural schooling, but spent most of his time studying everything, not just architecture but literally everything. Physics, material characteristics, and anything else that had anything to do with actual physical design of the human world. His designs were based upon actual experimentation he himself did, and he was not oriented towards what passes as Architecture in the academic subculture.
He was never taught what he was not supposed to do. Having been born nearly blind, he didn't get instructed what was the common way of thinking, which was based upon social convention, until he got glasses when he was older. Much of what we think is not consciously chosen but absorbed by what we see and hear as small children. He had to go by touch, not my sight, and it tremendously influenced his designs to go with what worked rather than what social convention or academia dictated.
