How do you set a table?

  1. Buy the things on the "Things You'll Need" part of the page.
  2. Place the chargers on the table, then put the plates on top of each.
  3. Fold the napkin lengthwise, and loop through the ring. Place it in the middle of each plate.
  4. Place the forks on the left side of the plate. The salad fork should be toward the far left, the main course fork closer to the plate. (the salad fork is the smaller one).
  5. Place the knives and spoons on the right side. The knives should be closer to the plate, with the spoons on the far right. Make sure the sharp part of the knife is pointing toward the inside of the plate. It will go in the order of: steak (big) knife, little knife, big spoon, little spoon.
  6. Place the dessert fork above the plate and the dessert spoon above the fork. (The pointy part of the fork will be pointed toward the right, the spoon mouth will be pointed toward the left.)
  7. On the left side of the plate (above the forks), you will place the bread plate with butter knife on top, edge-to-edge.

What are the difference between static degrees of freedom and dynamic degrees of freedom?

Mass and damping are associated with the motion of a dynamic system. Degrees-of-freedom with mass or damping are often called dynamic degrees-of-freedom; degrees-of-freedom with stiffness are called static degrees-of-freedom. It is possible (and often desirable) in models of complex systems to have fewer dynamic degrees-of-freedom than static degrees-of-freedom.

How does symmetry make things more stable?

Symmetry can make things more stable by having a balance of mass and structure.

For example:

If an upper floor that is square in plan is supported symmetrically by four columns, one at each corner, it will be stable. If it is supported by three columns at three of the four corners, the columns and floor will all need to be stronger to resist the extra load that the asymmetrical design puts on the structure.

If an upper floor is supported by a single column at the centre of the floor, the structural design will be balanced. If the column is positioned off-centre, the column and floor will again need to be stronger to resist the extra load that the asymmetrical design puts on the structure.

In an earthquake, symmetry make the reistance to earthquake forces easier by reducing the unbalancing effect of torsional or twisting forces.

What is moment connection?

A Moment Connection in structural design is a connection joint between a beam and a column where the end of the beam is restrained from rotating, thus creating a rigid frame without the use of conventional cross-bracing. Standard, or "pinned" connections are usually bolted and/or welded through the beam web and allow the beam to "rotate" in the "Y" direction when the beam is loaded. A moment connection freezes, or locks up the top and bottom flanges of the beam, thus making it "rigid".
