not myth or legend true
_________________________________________________________________
Sorry, but this above is exactly legend and/or myth. There may have been an instance in history where Jupiter (not a star) appeared beside a crescent moon reflected in a pool of blood. And, this has certainly been told and retold many times. However, this is not the history of the Turkish flag. Various forms of crescent and stars were used by Turkic Central Asian and Siberian clans thousands of years ago. It appears on coins and other historic artifacts. Modern day Turks are descended from these peoples. Coincidentally, it was also the Roman symbol for the goddess Diana, and represented on the flag of Constantinople prior to Ottoman capture. The Turks took this remarkable coincidence as evidence of their divine destiny to rule their empire from this site. Eventually, after the conquest of Constantinople and the conversion to Istanbul, the crescent/star symbol was adopted by various lands ruled by the Ottomans. Consequently, it came to be the symbol of Islam as well, but it's existence among Turks predates Islam by thousands of years. Interestingly, it was also once the flag of the British Royal Navy, and continues to represent the Portsmouth Coat of Arms in England, where the Navy is based. This adoption occured during the 3rd crusade when Richard invaded and overthrew the leadership in Cyprus. Cyprus was to be the launching site for the Royal Navy's operations. Thus the flag was usurped to represent the navy. So in short, while it has become the de facto symbol of Islam, it is actually rooted in Roman mythology and the Turkish peoples of the Caucasus and Central Asia. The eight pointed star and crescent on the flag of Azerbaijan specifically represents the eight Turkish tribes.

It will only be dipped during the playing of the National Anthem or To the Colors or a foreign national anthem. During salutes etc. the dip for State colors would be based on that States' flag laws. In the Army orgnaizational flags including the Army flag only dip during salutes for officers of that command and higher. This happens while the National Anthem is being played or in case a foreign national anthem is played. The United States Army flag is also dipped in a similar way. The regulations of the United States Air Force are somewhat different as the flag is dipped in salute while about six pages in front of a person being saluted.
