Impact of stock exchange on rural economy?
For the purposes of this answer I assume the stock exchange is the combined exchanges in New York City.
There are many consequences of a national stock exchange on a rural economy. I'll list a few bullet points.
1. Capital is transferred from rural residents to corporations located in large cities. With the exodus of capital, rural businesses have a difficult time acquiring the financing needed to expand operations. (Capital in this meaning, includes IRA contributions that flow to national stockbrokers, payments to large corporations from utilities to tele-communications companies).
2. Without the ability for a business to start or expand operations there is a lack of employment opportunities for workers in the rural economy. This leads to a migration from rural communities to large cities as people attempt to find employment or take jobs in the large cities. (Many commentators call this Brain Drain).
3. With large corporations that are traded on the stock exchanges having the ability to acquire capital there is an competitive advantage over smaller rural competitors that don't have the same availability for funding.
4. Since there is a lack of business activity in rural communities, this affects the tax base and many rural communities have to ask for subsidies for public services from the state or federal government.
5. In many rural communities the employment and poverty rates are high, so the state and federal governments subsides the rural residents with welfare and food stamp programs.
6. Basically, there is a significant disruption of the local rural trading area by the national stock exchanges that impact all aspects of a rural community to be economically self-sufficient.
How could the foregoing be remedied? Create rural stock exchanges, so capital that is siphoned to the big cities is kept in the local trading area giving the ability of rural business to acquire capital and create rural job opportunities. Of course, this is probably more theoretical as the people that run national stock exchanges would see this as competition and send out their lawyers and lobbyists to prevent any legislation creating rural stock exchange formation.

Does a shareholder have a right to compete with a company in which he owns stock?
It would not seem to be unethical or illegal, but it does appear to be rather counterproductive. The purpose for buying stock in a organization is usually for investment/profit.
