The peoplel of Lebanon and the coastal part of Syria share a lot. While the coastal part of Syria seems as natural extension of Lebanon, the rest of Syria shares the characteristics of the Arabic desert. The people of Lebanon, ethnically are: Phoenicians, Syro Aramaic, Arabs, Armenians, Greek, Kurds, Persians and other minorities. While, the mix of ethnicities in Syria is the same, the percentage of Phoenicians in the Lebanese population is higher, while the Aramaic percentage in Syrian population is the highest. The people of the two countries in the past 100 years has been distinguished be Syria following the Arabic and communist system, while Lebanon taking a Westernized path and and engaging in a free economy market. The education, culture, and living standers varies a lot between Lebanon and Syria today.

A. The objective of the rebel forces in Syria is to replace the central Syrian Government. The objective of the South in the US Civil War was not to replace or overthrow the Federal government, but to leave the Union and establish a new country called the Confederate States of America;

B. I the US Civil War, a new nation, the Confederacy was established. It lasted only 4 years, but it was a new nation. In comparison, the rebels in Syria have been unable to do what the US South did, but it's not their objective, which is to replace the current regime; and

C. In Syria, the "family" of dictators over the past 20 plus years, has indeed been a dictatorship. In the US Civil War, as angry as some Southerners were, they were part of a "constitutional" Federal Government. The Confederacy also had a constitution similar to the Federal one. At the time of the US Civil War, neither constitution, Union or Confederate outlawed slavery.

Taken as a whole, & except for the fact that a "conflict" is in Syria and was in the USA in 1861, no real comparison can be made. Surely however, it can be seen that the US Civil War is vastly different from the one in Syria.

One last note here (although many more differences can be noted ) the US Civil War, and if I can be allowed some leeway on this next sentence:
