1) Disconnect the negative and positive terminals from the battery. Jack up and support the front of the car and remove the right front wheel and tire. Then remove the two bolts from the side cover, inside of the wheel well. Remove the side cover. Reach for the serpentine belt tensioner through the side cover. Remove the tensioner bolt and remove the serpentine belt.
2) Disconnect the multi-pin cable connector from the back of the alternator and then remove the cable that bolts onto the back of the alternator with a metric combination wrench.
3) Remove the two bolts that run through the alternator mounting brackets, holding it onto the engine. Hold the nuts with another wrench while you turn the bolts to loosen them. Place the new alternator in position and insert a retaining bolt through an opening. Do not put a nut on it yet. Push the alternator forward to the front of the engine. Note how many spacers you will need to install between the alternator bracket and the alternator housing and then install them accordingly.
4) Fill the radiator, run the engine and allow it to warm up. Continue topping off the coolant after the engine has warmed up and air bubbles come out of the system.

Only thing that worked for me was to hook up a wire from the back of the alternator (there's a small terminal on the back), then hook up the other end to the positive battery cable (any which way at the post). This is actually to see if the wire that runs a charge from the alternator to the battery is still good. It is usually running attached to the positive battery cable itself. When it is bad, your car will not start because the battery is not being recharged properly. A hard thing to determine otherwise because it is not the alternator or the battery themselves.

I'm not sure what car you have, new cars are sometimes a sensor while older cars are alot easier to figure out. I would first take the car or the parts to a part store and have them tested. You can always get ahold of a bad batch of either. I had to replace my alternator 4 times and then go to another part store all together before I got a good alternator for it. You could have loose battery cables. If you are able to move the cables by hand then you need to tighten them down this could also make the battery and alternator go bad due to drawing to much juice out of them or even driving down the road and hit a bump then you are broke down on the road. But first have them tested and take it from there checking little things before moving to more expensive parts and harder to install sometimes when alternators go bad they blow a fuse if not changed you can put 20 alternators in must make sure you first have 13.8 - 14.1 volts while car is running

You should have a black wire with a red stripe hooked to the GRD post, a black wire with a yellow stripe hooked to the BAT post and a white wire hooked to the FLD post. The black wire with the red stripe is the ground and splits off with one end bolting to the engine block on the same bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the block, the black wire with the yellow stripe goes to the hot side of the starter solenoid, and the white wire goes over to the F post on the voltage regulator.
