What do you do with a newborn baby?

Though they may seem weak, defenseless, and at times, kind of pathetic... well, they kinda are. Boring, too, if you don't know what to do with 'em. There are actually lots of activities you can do with a newborn baby. Stimulating the senses is the key to having fun with a newborn - and getting a reaction out of them. Sight: At first, babies do better with high contrast colors, especially black and white. Watch them stare at high contrast objects you put in front of them... especially black and white pictures with defined outlines. Babies love to look at faces even more than high contrast colors. We are actually programmed to look at and learn from faces as infants. Just put your face up to his/hers (about 12-18 inches away, they are quite nearsighted) and make silly faces... You'll probably get a smile if the baby is over 6 weeks old. Smell: This one is trickier; the most fun thing to smell for a baby is pretty much: mom, especially a breastfeeding one. Touch: Does the baby grab yet? Kick? There are all kinds of interesting objects to feel, and once baby has started grabbing, it can get fun for him/her to test it all out. Taste: Like smell, this one is a bit limited for now. Babies can actually taste differences in mother's milk based on what she's eaten. They also know the differences between formulas. But at this point, they are all pretty much on a liquid diet. Sound: Sound is probably the quickest way to stimulate an infant since they've been hearing their mother's voice since they were inside the womb - along with all kinds of sounds from within. But now you can have them listen to all kinds of things: ringing bells, rattles, your favorite music... 'Dancing' with a baby to your workout playlist is not only fun for you and stimulating (and bonding) for him/her, but it's also a great way to rock the baby to sleep when you need a break.

Will a thrush infection in my baby's mouth hurt my baby?

Thrush is the common name for an oral yeast infection. Yeast is normally found on ALL areas of the skin. Mucous membranes (mouth, vagina, skin folds) are particularly vulnerable to overgrowth of yeast because those areas are moist/wet, dark, and warm. Yeast commonly begins to colonize when the pH changes, when the person recently took an antibiotic, or if the person's immune system is not strong.

Babies often get thrush. A doctor will prescribe an oral creamy liquid that will coat the mouth, tongue, and throat when the baby swallows. This medicine typically clears up thrush within 5 to 10 days.

Make sure to wash your baby's hands with mild soap frequently throughout the day. Milk or formula may be difficult to swallow with thrush because yeast causes excess throat secretions. Fruit juices may burn when swallowed. So you can give water after formula, milk, or juices to flush the throat.

Make sure you brush your baby's teeth (if the baby has teeth). Some moms put a couple drops of the medicine on their finger and wipe across the baby's gums, and between the gums and cheeks--make sure you wash your hands afterward with soap and hot water, and wash under your fingernails. Ask your doctor for other tips about oral care for your baby when the baby has thrush.

Thrush can cause:

  1. burning in the mouth
  2. sore throat
  3. excess mucous in the throat
  4. coughing from excess mucous in the throat
  5. * can lead to an ear infection
  6. a fussy baby
  7. poor eating / drinking while thrush is present

If you are nursing, ask your doctor about nipple care, whether you need to stop nursing for a couple days, and whether you need an oral pill to protect yourself from getting a yeast infection. Make sure to wash, rinse, and dry your breasts in between feedings.

Why do babies cry a lot?

If babies cry, it could be due to a multitude of reasons. Babies can be conditioned just like any other human being. Lets say, for example, your baby cries and the first thing you do is pick him/her up. Your child is going to associate crying with being picked up. So, even if you think its for no reason, the actual reason is for attention. A Couple Solutions: 1. If you are positive there is no physical reason for a baby to be crying (ex: baby has been fed, burped, changed and in NO discomfort), let the baby cry and break the association. Pretty soon, the baby will realize that crying does not mean he/she gets to be picked up. 2. Determine the association by retracing steps. If you pick the baby up and he/she is still crying, try putting it in its high chair, or try playing with him/her.
