What were the Black Codes during Reconstruction?

The black codes were a set of regulation for freedmen. They restricted their economic rights, they couldn't vote, they couldn't hold office or serve on a jury and they could not receive a public education.

These Black Codes were enacted by restored white governments in the South. These laws were harsh and severely restricted Black citizens. Examples were laws that required Blacks to be given a permit in order to take employment in other than field work or domestic services.

Why did Rutherford Hayes get picked to become president?

Rutherford Hayes became President because he make a deal with the southern States to pull the troops out of the south if they would cask their elector votes for for him and this would take away the protection of the newly free Black people. Rutherford B. Hayes and George W. Bush did not win the poplars but, they both became president because of the elector votes, so poplar votes did not win election.

Why did states create their own laws to prevent African Americans from participating as full citizens?

There are a number of factors that contribute to racial hatred and the resulting racial discrimination. Fundamentally, people are selfish, and that selfishness extends to the groups to which they belong; people therefore want to obtain advantages for their own ethnic group (such as European Americans) at the expense of other ethnic groups (such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, etc.). Added to that is the ugly history of slavery in America. Rather than admit that slavery had been a monstrously immoral practice, many people have tried to convince themselves that it is correct to treat people with darker skin as if they were domestic animals rather than human beings. That way, slave owners, and the culture that they created, have nothing to apologize for. Also it should be noted that even after the legal end of slavery in America, various other ways were found to enslave African Americans, who were often found guilty, by white judges and juries, of imaginary crimes, and who were then sentenced to hard labor, in effect to be used as slaves. It was therefore possible for white people to force black people to work for them without being paid, doing work that white people preferred not to do. This appealed to the selfishness of those who perpetuated racist societies.

What did a group of white southerners do after the new state governments repealed or ended the Black Codes?

Some white southerners throughout the entire Reconstruction Era and well into the twentieth century formed white supremacy organizations. These were secret societies whose main purpose was kill and terrify Blacks and any whites who supported Black civil rights. They also burned down Black southern churches. Thus even though so-called Jim Crow laws and Black code laws and practices were ending, the white hate groups continued their cruel and unlawful activities.

What is segregation de facto?

Racial segregation, especially in public schools, that happens "by fact" rather than by legal requirement. For example, often the concentration of African-Americans in certain neighborhoods produces neighborhood schools that are predominantly Black, or segregated in fact (de facto), although not by law (de jure).

De facto segregation means that there is, in reality, segregation. Consider racial segregation of schools in the U.S. There was a time when some states had legally mandated segregation -- separate schools for Black and White students. This is no longer the case. However, some places still have de facto segregation where certain schools are virtually all White and others are virtually all Black. This could happen because the Blacks of a district live in the same area and use the same local school. And they might live in the same area because it is where they can afford the housing, or because whites in a formerly mixed neighborhood have moved away.

Trace the origins of Christianity?

Christianity began as an outgrowth of Judaism. Paul, who was a Jewish rabbi from the city of Tarsus (in what is now modern Turkey) wrote much of the New Testament - in the form of Epistles (or letters). Jesus was a Jewish rabbi from the province of Galilee, and his disciples were all Jewish, as well. After the fall of Judea, to the Roman Empire, in 70 A.D. some Jews sought a way to preserve their religious tradition by spreading their religious views to non-Jews (or Gentiles), and Paul was a central figure in this effort. Over the course of the next hundred to two hundred years, the practices of non-Jews diverged, increasingly, from that of Orthodox Jews, culminating in the establishment of the Christian religion, most notably at the Council of Nicea (arranged at the behest of the Emperor Constantine) in 325 A.D. It was at the Council of Nicea (and subsequent councils) that doctrine was more solidified in order to define Christianity for the entire Roman Empire - as it had been practiced in a fragmented manner, up to that point, with diverse Christian groups following many different charismatic Christian leaders.

Why did the KKK name a highway after Rosa Parks?

Actually, the KKK didn't name the highway after Rosa Parks. The state of Missouri did. They did this because one of the participants in the KKK wanted to participate in the 'adopt a highway' thing, but Missouri said no, and the KKK took it to court and the court said it was unconstitutional not to give the highway to the KKK. BUTT, the state of Missouri found a loophole so that THEY could name the highway. So, in short, the state of Missouri named the highway, not the KKK (Ku Klux Klan).
