How did the first camera ever invented work?
The first camera ever invented was the one that made the first photograph ever produced. That was done by a French gentleman named Niepce, who had a device called a Camera Obscura. A Camera Obscura was a box with a hole in one end, a mirror set at a 45-degree angle, and a piece of glass to lay a tracing paper on. In use, you aimed it at what you wanted a picture of, put the tracing paper on the glass, and drew the picture with a pencil.
Niepce practiced an art called Heliography. You got a piece of tinplate steel, coated it with asphalt, laid things on the asphalt and stuck it out in the sun for many hours to let light harden the coating. Then you washed the plate to remove the unexposed asphalt and you had a picture. (Reprints were out of the question.) Niepce decided to see what would happen if he put a heliograph plate in his camera obscure and left it there all day. What happened is he got a picture - the camera obscura put enough light on the plate to harden it.

What does an orange 02 filter do to photographs?
For black and white, it will pass more of it's complementary color (in the blue range) thereby darkening blue sky with less effect on white clouds, for instance. The net effect will be increased contrast between blues and reds. The white clouds appear to become more pronounced, but that is due to the darkening of the sky. Orange filters will do this more than a y2 yellow would, but not as much as a red.

Do camera flashes really damage paintings?
They can, yes. The damage won't be immediately noticable, but is cumulative with all the light that hits that painting. If you have lived in the same house for a really long time, and anything has been hanging on the wall for all that time, and the room hasn't been repainted... go and move it slightly. You will see a difference in color between the wall behind whatever was hung on the wall and the wall beside it. The paint around the object will seem bleached out. Light can do damage to lots of things. We worry about it more with older paintings because they have so much cumulative light damage already. The more popular the painting, the more you worry as well, because more people will want to take pictures.
