How much would a packet of 7 by 9 individual autographed photographs of the 1948 Cleveland Indians be worth?

Because of the size of these photos I believe you mighthave photographs that were part of a picture pack souvenir. Picture Pack photos were sold at the ballparks, and come with a facsimile signature. They would have a value about $10. -$30. each depending on the player, as if they were hand signed I cannot give a more accurate value without knowing the players.

With a Facsimile signed photo the preprint signature often appears to be below the surface gloss of the photo, and the signature is often very "flat." Hold the photo up at an angle to a light source. A real signature is written on the surface of the photo, and should have a different level of reflectivity than the rest of the surface. A preprint will blend right in with the surface because it's underneath the surface gloss.

In the Wilson cloud chamber photograph the path of the alpha particle is a thick and continuous line whereas that of the beta particle is a thin and broken line. How can this be explained?

To explain the observation asked about in the Wilson cloud chamber photograph, let's take just a moment to talk about what a cloud chamber is. In a cloud chamber, we see a supersaturated environment where alcohol or some other substance is present as a vapor in air. The substance appears in the air in such high quantity that it is ready to rain within the chamber. (In some chambers, the tiniest droplets are actually forming, and it is raining extremely small droplets!) The inside of the chamber is undisturbed by any outside forces (save gravity and the radiation moving through it).

When particles or rays of high energy move through the chamber, the atoms of air along the path of travel are ionized. Electrons are torn out of the orbitals of these atoms, and these ionized atoms will form places where that supersaturated vapor can condense. Tiny droplets of liquid will form along the path of travel of the radiation, and this "track" can be seen from outside the chamber. The condensation is actually a little "cloud" inside the chamber, hence the name cloud chamber. That said, let's see what happens when radiation passes through it.

The alpha particle is really a helium-4 nucleus. It is a pair each of protons and neutrons, and it is relatively heavy as particulate radiation goes. When an alpha particle moves through the chamber, it slams into air atoms all along its path of travel. There is a lot of energy exchange, and there will be a lot of ionized atoms and a lot of condensation along the course the particle takes. This heavy track of condensate will be easy to spot. Compare that to the track of a beta particle, which could be an electron or positron. The electron or positron is extremely small and light compared to the alpha particle, and it will be much, much less likely to interact with an atom along the path that it travels. This will result in much less ionized air along its track, and much less cloud formation along that path. The observer will see a clear difference between the two particle tracks as he peers into the chamber during the experiment.

We've left out a couple of things as regards the magnetic field that is usually incorporated into the cloud chamber, and also what we might expect as regards the tracks of other forms of radiation that might pass through. But the large difference in the sizes of the alpha and beta particles will result in marked differences in their ability to ionize the atoms of air along their respective routes through the chamber. And this will cause a large difference in the size of the cloud tracks that appear in their wakes, and will allow the observer to clearly distinguish between the two particles as they pass through the chamber. Links can be found below to related questions which might allow the investigator to gain further insight into the particles and the operation of the cloud chamber.

Why do I get the error messege please turn camera off and back on for Panasonic DMCLZ1?

My daughter dropped her Lumix and this problem then occurred, I researched it on the Internet, and found various suggestions. e.g. apply slight pressure to the lens when the camera starts, wipe outside of lens, remove batteries etc. etc. etc. etc..

I tried everything - every time the camera was turned on the message appeared.

So I took out the batteries and sd card and stuck the camera in a drawer and bought a new camera.

Now the interesting bit - one month later, out of interest, I got out the camera, stuck in the battery and an old SD card (I used the Lumix card in my new camera) - AND it started up with no problems!! The problem had gone away - why - different SD card? Some internal memory finally "forgot" it had a problem?, perhaps it just had a long rest? - no idea.

Anyway its OK now, and I now have 2 cameras.

Weird - thank goodness I did not bin it!

So don't despair - try it - it may work for you.

ps. With the original sd card in, it still works ok.

What are the actual measurements of 35mm film?

The actual 'image' area of the film measures 36mm x 24mm There were three image sizes for 35mm cameras: 24 x 36 "double frame," which is the most popular size and the only size sold today 24 x 24 "square," which was introduced after World War II as a means of giving the photographer more pictures on a roll 18 x 24 "single frame," which is the same size as a 35mm movie camera frame. This is also called "half frame." Half-frame cameras are very collectible. There is also a 24 x 60 (or thereabouts) panoramic format--long, skinny pictures.

To take a clear picture of an image in a mirror should the camera be focused on the image or the mirror?

An image in a mirror is a "virtual" image which takes on certain characteristics. One of these characteristics is that the apparent distance is equal to the distance from the observer to the mirror plus the distance from the mirror to the subject. If the observer and subject are the same, then the apparent distance is twice that of the subject to the mirror. If the observer is 3 feet from the mirror and the subject is 20 feet away, the apparent distance is 23 feet. If you focus on the subject and have distance markings on your lens, you can prove this to yourself.

Why is megapixel count not the only measure of image quality?

When did they invent red light cameras?

Infra-red cameras ( for use at night and with special film) have been used for spy and detective applications since the interwar (20"s and thirties) period . Also useful for nature watching. Some have special IR sights that fan out like flashlight reflectors. these closely duplicate what the camera sees on the lens but are subject to some parallax. The ALPA type with special viewfinder looks like a piece of spy equipment, which it is and was. They are made in Switzerland. On the other hand the modern auto-focusing Nikons use Infra red beams ( invisible to naked eye) for focusing purposes but these are not Infra-Red cameras per se. Observe the Red Line.

Is there Sales Tax on Wedding Photography?

you better believe it, at least in California there is! death and taxes! from what I understand, if your services (photography) lead to a tangible product (prints, albums, CD of images), then there's sales tax, and the sales sale,(e.g., 6%, 8%, whatever it is for your state) is on the total package, not on just the cost of prints, or albums. however, if you shoot something, and you only offer a place where clients can download their images, such as an FTP server, then there's no sales tax b/c nothing tangible was delivered. so, I guess a more correct answer would be that it depends. here's a link to California's state board of equalization website, a PDF file you can read more on taxes for photographers. there may be a similar one for your state.. ask the google master!

What is the value of a Bell and Howell Zoom Electric Eye 8mm movie camera model 314?

Hi, I've got the same type of camera myself, in mint condition w/ carring case - the flash blub. I have this book that is Antiques, collectibles and other treasures price guide. Its a directory of buyers, by Dr.Tony Hyman. I wrote to a man (Harry Poster, at P.O. Box 1883-SP South Hackensack, NJ 07606) He buys cameras & view masters, I sent him a photo along w/ a SASE. He returned my request of a value on my camera of around $ 75.00 to $100.00, he also offered to buy. (He is only wanting near mint or mint condition).
He also has a 24hr phone (201) 794-9606 Fax (201) 794-9553. His email address is: hpostet@worldnet.att.net.

What is the the value or some information on a Polaroid Land Camera M60?

While a collector can still get a $5.00 deal at a flea market or yard sale, professional dealers sell M60s in good working condition for approximately $40-80. Bear in mind this is virtually the same camera as the 210, which sells for almost nothing.

More Information

The Polaroid Countdown M60 Land camera was manufactured from 1970-1977, and is a "special markets" version of the Polaroid 210 Land camera, with the addition of a built-in mechanical development timer. It initially retailed for $59.99, compared with the 210 at $49.99. The Model 210 on which it was based was introduced in 1967, and was the lightest weight and lowest priced camera in the Polaroid consumer line.

The 210/M60 used a 114 mm f 8.8 two-element plastic lens, which meant it wasn't good for use in low-light conditions unless your subject was close enough to illuminate with a flash. Since the 210/M60 had no tripod socket, the users would get best results in bright light (unless he or she has very steady hands) with 75 ASA film (color). The only other option was 3000 ASA film (black and white).

The M60 uses 100/600 series land pack film, still available from both Polaroid and Fujifilm at a retail price of about $1.00 per sheet.

While the 210 is one of the most plentiful old Polaroids on the market (1.4 million +), the manufacturing run for the M60 was relatively small, at ~ 150,000, making it more difficult to find and price.

What can you do legally if a 20-year-old man in a different state is chatting with your 16-year-old daughter on the internet and phone and you caught her sending suggestive pictures via camera phone?

Legally you can't really do anything unless you can prove he's trying to solicit her for sex, but it sounds like they were chatting. She willingly sent photos to him over the web, so she's not really being coerced.

What you can do is actively protect and monitor your daughter. Don't allow computers in bedrooms, monitor her online activity and install a filter on the computer so that certain websites will be blocked.

You bet you can do something about it!She is a minor and he's not! He is breaking the law and there is a high possibility he's into porn. These types of leeches in society prey on young women/men. Get the police involved. In Canada this is against the law and the police have a group that does nothing but track these letches! Don't sit there and take it, and get the police in on it. When your daughter isn't home print out all messages or burn them on CD and that means the pictures as well! If you don't know how to do this then get someone in the family that you can trust. You need to stop this guy now! The police often can track on just the MO alone. They want these guys! This type of thing is no different than a pimp out on any city street trying to get young people to "join the family" mean their group.

In the US local police departments do not have jurisdiction over the Internet nor the use of such.

The matter should be brought to the attention of the United States Customs Enforcement Divison,

USCE Hotline for reporting sexual predators, 1-800-232-5378, 24/7.

AnswerI am from Canada and I put the post "You bet you can do something about it." We don't know who is Canadian, American from the U.K., etc., so I gave what the law here is in Canada. I did watch a program that indeed the police officers in larger cities are now trying to crack-down on kiddy porn, seducing kids on the Internet and more teams are being used to try to catch these criminals. It's big business and many parents aren't aware it's going on.

Thanks for the additional info re the U.S. laws.

ANOTHER ANSWERBe a responsible parent and SUPERVISE your child's computer use. If this is somehow not possible, there are plenty of programs to limit where a child "goes" on a computer ie...chatrooms, porn sites, adult sites etc... If all else fails, lock up the darn computer! Believe it or not, children CAN live without being pluncked down in front of a monitor. There are perverts eveywhere, so some rules and guidelines might be in order for your DAUGHTER. In the UKI didn't answer this question originally as it was clearly from North America. However in the UK 16 is the age of consent and neither would be breaking the law. 2 years on, or 4 years on would you think it so odd they were chatting, if that is all it is?

How do you remove camera film before roll has finished?

Either expose the remaining film or, in a perfectly dark room (or a "dark room" lighted only with red light), advance the film and work the shutter as if taking photos or open the camera, remove the film and manually roll the film onto the take-up roll. If you do any of these things in a dark room or "dark room," the film will not be exposed but, unless you have photographer's equipment and skills, you will not be able to use the unexposed portion.
