Can you access original army reports from World War 2?

Try the United States Army Military History Institute: http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi

Bruce Lee (no, not the actor) in his book "Marching Orders" about the impact of Ultra and Magic radio intercepts/decodings on the course of the war, wrote that at one time (1962/1963) the U.S. Army and captured German archives (such as the Americans had) from WW II were in Alexandria, Virginia and occupied an estimated 14 acres, on racks that were in some places 30 feet high. Later these records were distributed to different research centers around the world. During his research (at the time for the book "The Last Battle," Lee and two assistants reviewed an estimated 1.4 million pages of official American and German records. Luckily he was allowed to copy much of what he reviewed. He says that when the records were distributed many documents were "lost." These were actual unit records, the daily reports, written orders, copies of radio / telegraph messages. This doesn't really answer your question about current locations. Try some of the links on this page: http://www.army.mil/references/ one is to the USMA History Department - call or email them and ask what's available. Call or email some of the other organizations behind the links on this page. Perhaps they got some of the great diaspora.

It is popular to credit the potato blight which depopulated Ireland by twenty percent as the moment of Irish Immigration to the Americas. It actually began long before 1845 as the result of overpopulation and a reliance on subsistence farming. The mass exodus that began with the famine and resulted in claims of genocide and death ships have become a part of Irish lore. In truth Ireland began expoting people in large numbers about 1812, to Australia, Canada, the US and England. It was piecemeal at the time, excess sons and daughters became the world's displaced persons.
