Turn key on, DO NOT START. Then push the gas pedal all the way down to the floor 3 times, then turn key off and then START the engine. Be sure to let off of the gas pedal each time.

There are MANY reasons this could be happening. You need to get a shop to hook up the Cummins Insite program to look up fault codes.

The dashboard diagnostic for that year only works with a Detroit engine... it would flash a series of codes via the amber and red engine lights, then you'd have to call it in to decipher it. That's an electronic engine, and you'd need to either hook up a computer with the appropriate software (i.e., DDEC for Detroit, Insite for Cummins, ET for Cat), or use something like a ProLink IQ with an SAE J1708 connector just to read faults. The ProLink can only scan and clear codes, and won't have the full functions of ECM software.

An OBD2 code reader is used by locating the connector under the dash and attaching it to the vehicle. It then reads the diagnostic codes of the engine which can be read or deleted using the control pad.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes. The light will go off but will just come back on if you do not repair the problem that caused it to come on in the first place.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

The fuse box diagram should be on the fuse box cover. It also is in the automobiles owners manual.

Take the car to the dealer or a qualified repair facility that has a diagnostic set up called Vida and uses a VCT2000 data interface that connects to the OBD2 unit. Have the codes read and find out what caused the fault that turned the airbag light on.

The ford escape is a very temperamental car to say the least. The light could be coming on for several reasons. The escape has many sensors that can short circuit and cause the light to go on. I recommend taking your car to autozone. They will test your car out for free and narrow the problem down. Then you can go from there. Fix it yourself or take it to a mechanic.

I had the same problem. Took it into the dealer and it ran me about $1,000. Blown head gasket in my intake. In other words, this car is no Corvette, lol.

If this is a newer car it could be that the maintenance light comes on at a set mileage number that the manufacturer has determined.It could be the 50,000 mile or 75,000 mile on the odometer.This is set by the manufacturer so that you bring the car in for a check up.They simply reset something and the light goes away.You should read your service manual for any info on this or call your local dealer. The Check engine light could be several different problems, not solely the gas gap not being tight. Your emissions could be messed up. Placing fuel injector cleaner in your gas and using a higher octane could solve the problem. Another problem could be your air intake. Change your air filter and clean out any dirt in the filter housing. The final issue could be oxysgen sensors. I have read that they need to be replaced anywhere from 30,000 miles to 60,000 miles. A bad O2 sensor will turn on the check engine light. Good luck. The evaporation cannister is a likely culprit. These are known to be faulty on many Chevy Prizm models. I know the 99s have them for sure, because I just had mine replaced a few months ago. It's a costly repair; I hope you have a warranty.

After my 2001 Rav 4's engine light was on for two years(...yes, after changing two $150-$200 sensors, 5 failed imspections, $250.00 fine for not passing inspection which lead to not being able to renew registration, 6 tickets for no current inspection/registration), Toyota finally sent me letter to say there was a recall on the check engine light. It took them approximately 30 ,imutes to fix the problem after two years of lost time and money...not to mention my driving record credibility (yes, the police can be nasty and give you a ticket more than once the same problem, even if you have a ticket in your hand frrom the same week...speaking from experience!)

The engine computer had detected something wrong somewhere in the engine management system. This could be an O2 sensor or any number of things. Take your car to a shop and have your car scanned for fault codes to see what the problem might be.

Hi, I just wanted to add more information on this problem. The truck will not start, and the check engine light is on. I tried to use a scan tool, and it did not find any fault codes, but the light is still on. This problem cane after I changed the MAF, MAP, TPS, EGR and the fuel pump. I have reinstalled the old components, except the fuel pump. I checked to see if I am getting spark and fuel pressure. The spark seems weak, and I have no fuel pressure. I read in the manual the the oil pressure switch can cause a fault that shuts off the fuel pump, but not sure how to verify that. I checked the fuel pump relay and it appears to be OK, and there I think there is power to the relay, since there are 3 relays side by side, I don't know which on is for the fuel pump. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. I have tracked down one problem to the fuel pump, no I lose ignition power after a second or two. Any ideas? Thanks.
