Why does a 2001 Monte Carlo ss dash lights work only some of the time?
I had the same problem, my mechanic said the Body Control Module was bad, but he didn't had the computer to program the new module.
In total I paid $400. Diagnosis problem, replacement and program new body control module. And guess what? It didn't fix the problem and they would not refund my money so I called the B.B.B. and nicely told the shop they had 5 days to return my money is a repair that they said would fix the problem but did nothing.
Since the Dealer had to program the new body control module and after the lights still did not work I asked they what would cause the problem. They said in most cases the headlight switch was the cause. "Even if I never use it" (light sentinel system).
They told me that the dimmer part of the switch goes bad. So I went home, took the Instrument Panel off, removed the headlight switch and it was melted. $125 later the new switch was bought and installed, it took about1 1/2 hours and was well worth the time I spent.

If it's like my 02 Monte you have to remove the brace going across the battery and then there is a electrical box on the wheel well that is in the way that has to come off, unbolt the hold down on the battery and take the battery cables off and work the battery out, you will probably have to tilt it to get it out.

How Do you replace the heater core on 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo LS?
Replacing a heater core is one of the most challenging repairs you can do. Removing and replacing the core is easy. Getting to it, is the hard part. This is why this repair is so very expensive. Labor costs are tremendous. I cannot tell you exactly how to get to the core. All I can tell you is that you must remove enough of the under dash components to gain access. Someone who has done this before on this year and model will know how. Sometimes it is just trial and error. Just be careful, do not break anything and remember exactly how everything fits. Take pictures with a digital camera during each step as this may help you reassemble each part.

You need to locate the switch on the evaporator canister that is located on the passenger side firewall. IT should look like a large can wraped in foam. Unplug the switch and jump it with an insulated wire. It should engage the clutch on the compressor when jumped.

Well, I quess "plug the connectors back in" doesn't cut it, so, here goes: The fans are controlled by 2 relays that are located in the fuse box mounted on the right fenderwell. The fans get their power from the relays through the light blue wire from relay 1 to fan 1 and the white wire from relay 2 to fan 2. The black wires on both fans are ground If the relays are dead, they get their power through the red wires from the 2 60amp maxi fuses in the same box. Note: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) activates the relays by "reading" a signal from the engine temperature sensor. A malfunction in this system will show up as a fault code P0117 or P0118 and the fans will not operate properly Hope this helps
