Portage Park history?

My family moved to Portage Park in 1949. I was told that the park got its name because the Indians "portaged" their canoes through this area. I read in a book about St. Pascal's church that homes were built in the area because people who worked at "Dunning" (the farmer's name who donated the land) needed housing. Portage Park homes were built in the 19 teens and 1920's.The Watson family who lived on Waveland had the first telephone in the area.

I hope this information helps.

Can you fish on navy pier?

Yes, if it's open to the public.

Fishing is allowed on the north side of the pier. Most of what you are likely to catch are yellow perch, but rock bass and some salmonid are caught as well. Bring your license and respect the limits as the DNR checks regularly. Bring a long handle net if you are going after salmon as the pier is high off the water.

Also there is a parking deal. In after 5am out by 10am for $5 if you show your fishing license to the parking office they will validate your ticket.
