How to set 1990 Chrysler lebaron timing?

This is my first time to set timing and probably the last due to computerized timing control in newer cars, but I purchased a timing light and hooked it up to the positive and negative posts of battery and clamped the spark timing clamp onto the #1 spark plug wire and then cranked the engine and then shot the flashing light at my crankshaft pulley. Make sure you put emergency brake on and chock the wheels and unplug the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector. Then you will see the mark dancing around next to the numbers egraved on the right of the pulley on the engine when you aim the light at it. You need to consult your manual and find where optimum timing should be. Mine was 12 degrees before top dead center. Then there is a 12 mm nut in front of the distributor(between the distributor and the radiator) that will allow you to adjust the timing. Take note of your current timing, mine was like 20-25 degrees before top dead center. Then I turned my car off and loosened the nut and moved the timinging adjusting screw to the left or right, in my case to the left. It is in a curve because you are moving the distributor clockwise and counterclockwise. I actually did mine with the car running and while shooting the timing light at the numbers to watch it change to 12 degrees. The timing will jump around some but you can see the engine move when you adjust the timing. It kind of says "Ahhhhh", and it runs considerably better. I definitely noticed better acceleration and pickup and smoothness of ride. Don't forget to tighten the nut when finished. Shoot the timing light after you finish tightening the bolt as it will move some when tightening. I don't think we have to worry about Mechanical timing with this electronic distributor. The only downfall I have noticed is that when I accelerate up a hill, the engine feels like it is very slightly jumpy. I was thinking maybe I adjusted the timing too low, so today I have set it back slightly so that the minimum is not to the 10 degree mark. The first time I adjusted it, the minimum would dip down to the 10 degree mark ever so often. Well, good luck, and I hope I can figure my slight jumpiness during acceleration. Other than that, you will notice a good change to your engine performance, much smoother ride and better acceleration and better gas mileage.

01-24-09 I set the timing back(a few degrees to the right) slightly and I am not getting the jumpy acceleration as before. The lack of jumpy acceleration could be due to training mode of the A604 transmission, but I did not disconnect the battery terminals, so it should not go into training mode. I will know more in few days driving. Note: If you adjust the timing to lower that what your manual says, the you will get detonation in the cylinder too early and it will cause wear on the parts. You may want to have timing done by a mechanic who can tell exactly where it should be. It is cheaper to get it done in the garage than to buy the timing light.

The only thing you forgt was to unplug the coolant sensor after starting the engine, so that the computer is not advancing the timing.

Yeah, I must have eaten a took. Well you are right. I tried what you said and my original 2 adjustments were incorrect. Make sure you start the car first and then unplug the coolant sensor. The car will just die if you do that in reverse. Then shoot the timing light at your crankshaft pulley. After my incorrect adjustments, I was getting a reading of about 7 btdc. It should be 12 btdc. No wonder It was jumpy during acceleration. Now it is corrected and luckily none too soon. After this third adjustment, I plugged the coolant sensor back in and the fan shut off and I took another reading of the "advance" timing and it was between 20-25 btdc. So don't mistake that for the non-advance timing like I did. You must unplug that coolant temp. sensor before you take your reading. I guess an Advance timing light would overcome this coolant sensor. Always read the directions! It was right in the book. I guess you really do have to follow the directions exactly, or else!

What could be the problem with a 1991 Chrysler LeBaron that will not hold a charge with a new battery and alternator installed?

Something is drawing the current out of your battery and this is called a short. A short is a closed circuit that should be open. The circuit should NOT be draining current but because it is, it is causing a constant drain on your battery. They are usually very hard to find and need to be done with a circuit tester, probing wires to try to find where the current is going. An example of a circuit would be when you step on your brake pedal, a switch at the top of your brake pedal makes contact with another contact and when they touch, the circuit is now complete and your brake lights come on. Let off the brake pedal and the connectors separate and the lights go out. Now.....imagine that the connectors at the top of the brake pedal do not separate when you leave off the brake pedal. The lights will stay on until you break that circuit. You have a circuit that is drawing current from yoru battery, and this can be caused by a wire, that the insulation has rubbed off and now it is touching something metal. Where the wire is touching is completing the circuit and it is drawing the current from the battery like if you left the dome light on. The hard part is, trying to locate that wire, or possibly a bad ground wire. I would definitely check to make sure that the new alternator IS putting otu the right amount of voltage. Even a brand new alternator can be bad, I have installed one personally. Have it tested to make sure it is putting out the voltage you need. If it does pass then you probably have a short. If the alternaotr is not putting out enough voltage, then you are using more of the battery then what the alternator is replacing and thus your battery is dieing even though your alternator is putting out some voltage, just not enough. make sure when they installed the alternator and battery make sure they got a good ground. If you can find a circuit tester or a multi meter and can learn how and where to probe, you may be lucky and find the source of your short. It takes patience and a plan so you eliminate one circuit after another. You just don't haphazardly just jump all over the car testing wires. You could and may be lucky and find it but odds are against that. What you are looking for would be like with the key off, and your circuit tester with one wire grounded, you would probe say a light under your hood. Now that light should only be on when you open the hood right? But what happens if it is staying on all the time? You will need to test the wires WITH the hood OPEN but you will want to recreate the circuitry so that it thinks the hood is closed. If you duplicate the condition where the hood is closed in the circuitry and then you probe the "hot" wire and it turns on the light, then you have found a circuit that is not supposed to be drawing current but is. Now why is it? A bad switch? A bad ground? Corrosion leads to a lot of short circuits. Condensation forms in some electrical connectors and leads to corrosion. Well.......it isn't easy diagnosing shorts but try the alternator first and hopefully that will be the culprit. If not........happy hunting.............and pray for patience. Added Comment: I also have a 1991 Lebaron and my car does the same thing as well. I added a remote battery disconnect (is $60 at Canadian tire) and I simply press the button and it saves the battery for me. It's the new tech way of disconnecting the battery cable from the battery when the car sits parked and I press the button again when I'm about to start it and it's saved me alot of time and hassle. Hope this helps.

What causes a 1995 Chrysler Lebaron convertible to leak water when it rains puddling on the floorboard both front and rear driver side?

I had this exact problem and there is more to the problem than just an old top. no convertible top is ever water tight no matter how old or new the top is. in the bottom of the rear window wells there are two small drain holes that allow any water that has gotten in to drainout of the wells. however these holes are rather small and can become clogged with leafs or other debris. when this happens the wells fill with water and this flows forward into the hollow box frame of the car where it is attached to the window wells. now the problem that you incounter is that the seat belts for the car have had their mounts drilled into the hollow box frame and this is where the water comes out of after the frame fills up. what i did to fix this problem was to clean out the leafs and debris. then I drilled the drain holes larger so they would drain better. after this i took out the seats and seatbelts along with the carpeting and then I used "Great Stuff" foam filler and pumped it into the box frame through the openings in the frame to seal it off from the window wells. (this product can be bought at any hardware store and is water proof). the larger drain holes and sealed off box frame will solve the flooding problem alltogether. ^^ It's either due to the top shrinking with age or an incorrect installation. Look at the corners of the top where it meets the body by the 2 rear windows. I bet you can put your finger underneath there. The water runs down into the body by the rear windows (that's what kills the windows motors, btw) and then it puddles in the rear floor. Check out the side bow where the drivers window comes up. The top should wrap down tightly and cover that. If not, water weeps into the front and runs down the weatherstrip.

What causes a 1995 Chrysler Lebaron convertible to squeak in rear end?

A squaek in any car is usually an indicator of worn suspension parts. The most likely causes are dried up rubber bushings. They can be temporarily quieted with some WD-40, but they will soon need replacing.

If the squeak is metal-on-metal, the rubber bushings are completely destroyed and some metal parts my need replacing. Don't worry. Suspension parts are cheap.

I have had the same squeak coming from the rear of my 1995 Lebaron Conv. Under the back axle, which is in the shape of an upside down U, there is a metal pole runing as a stabilizer in the "tunnel" of the U. This begins to rub and causes a squeak that most mechanics and other techs. do not find. I simply put a brace betweek the tube and the U, problem solved!

Where is the motor for the top on a 1994 Chrysler Lebaron located?

The motors for the convertable top are in the trunk in the very back behind spare tire there is a up motor and a down motor.I believe the driver side motor is the up motor. There is one motor/pump assembly and it is located directly behind the rear passenger seat. It can be accessed by removing the rear seat or by going through the trunk.

Why would a 1990 Chrysler LeBaron crank but wont start?

There could be a few reasons why a 1990 Chrysler Lebaron will crank but not start. The fuel pump could be out or the car could be out of gas. There may be a malfunction in the ignition system causing no spark.
