Who invented pliers?

Early pliers were probably invented many times by many different people.

Wooden, and then bronze, pliers were in use before 3000 BC.

When fire was tamed by early humans, they used a wooden stick to manage the coals. Then two sticks would be used to lift and move hot objects. The men and women would be highly motivated to develop rough tongs and early plier-like tools in order to manage the cooking without getting burned.

Early forging of metals saw the widespread use of pliers for handling the hot metal.

How do you use a theodolite?

Process of Measuring Horizontal Angles Using a Theodolite 1. Setting up the Theodolite: This includes mounting the theodolite on a tripod and making sure it is comfortable for the user. 2. Unlock the upper horizontal clamp. 3. Rotate the theodolite until the arrow in the upper or lower rough sight points to the feature of interest and lock the clamp. 4. Look through the main eyepiece and use the upper horizontal adjuster to align the vertical lines on the feature of interest. 5. The reading is taken by looking through the small eyepiece. Using the minutes and seconds adjuster set the one of the degrees on the horizontal scale so the single vertical line on the bottom scale is between the double vertical lines under the selected degree. 6. The reading is the degree which has been aligned and the minutes and seconds read from the right hand scale and is the horizontal angle from the reference line. Process of Measuring Vertical Angles Using a Theodolite

Process of Measuring Vertical Angles 1. Setting up the Theodolite: This includes mounting the theodolite on a tripod and making sure it is comfortable for the user. 2. Unlock the vertical clamp and tilt the eyepiece until the point of interest is aligned on the horizontal lines. Lock the clamp in place. 3. Looking through the small eyepiece, use the minutes and seconds adjuster to align one of the degrees on the vertical scale with the double lines just below it. 4. The reading is the degree that has been aligned and the minutes and seconds is read from the right hand scale. 5. To complete the reading, it may be necessary to measure the distance from the theodolite to the point of interest.

The above is al true, but doesn't discuss the practical uses of a theodolite. For example, if you want to know the height of the top of the gable on a house, you could use a theodolite. First, set up the theodolite (btw, I made one with a piece of copper tube, a protractor and a cheap wooden tripod) as noted above, make sure the ground is pretty level between the house and the theodolite, and then measure the distance from the vertical side of the house to the theodolite. (You may choose to move the theodolite so that the distance is the square of a whole number.) Then aim the scope (tube) at the upper-most point of the gable and note the degree of angle on the protractor. If you have pretty level ground between the theodolite and the house, the angle at the intersection of the side of the house and the ground should be 90 degrees. So, now we have two angles (the 90 degrees at the intersection of the side of the house and the ground, and whatever angle you recorded at the theodolite) and a side (the distance from the house to the theodolite). With this information, you can calculate the third angle and the other two sides, one of which will be the hypotenuse and the other will be -- tada! -- the final leg, which will tell you the height of the point you picked out at the top of the gable.

What is the age of a CS Shattuck Model 6127 double barrel shotgun?

C.S. Shattuck Arms Co., Hatfield, Mass. (1878 to 1908)

In 1875 C.S. Shattuck and Andrew Hyde started a pistol manufacturing business in Springfield, Mass. In February of 1877, Andrew Hyde and Major Charles S. Shattuck brought their Springfield pistol manufacturing business to Hatfield and went into a partnership with Mrs. Mary D. Porter in the Thomas Meekin sawmill on Prospect St., formerly Crescent Pistol Co. est. 1874 (Shattuck possibly also had, concurrently or otherwise a gun shop on Bridge St. in Hatfield, dates unknown). In 1878 Mrs. Porter withdrew her partnership and the business was continued by Hyde and Shattuck. In 1880 Shattuck bought out Hyde and continued the factory alone, turning out many revolvers. Soon after he began to make single-barreled breech-loading shotguns, and then few years later double-barreled shotguns. Large quantities of both were made, averaging for a time 15,000 guns per year.

The gun shop was burned in 1881 and was immediately rebuilt on the same site. The manufacture of guns was abandoned in 1909. In 1910 the only arms being turned out was a new four-shot pistol*, but for how long is unknown.

Major Charles S. Shattuck served with the 6th Vermont Infantry in the Civil War and later lived on Main St. in Hatfield, Mass. He returned at least once to Vermont for a military reunion.

Shattuck was best known for inexpensive handguns and single barrel shotguns. Their Single Barrels are valued from $35 to $150, Double Barrels $100 to $400 depending on condition and design type (model). The 8 bores will normally command more. Condition is of course the most important issue, for considering the value any firearm.

* "A History of Hatfield, Massachusetts" Daniel White Wells, Reuben Field Wells 1910

NOTE: There are many types (models) of the Shattuck Double Barrel Shotguns. It is possible that the number 6127 is the Serial Number. Very few of the Shattuck shotguns were stamped with a Model Number. The Serial Number will be stamped in several locations on the Shotgun: always on the Receiver, always on the bottom of the Barrel or barrel lug, sometimes the Buttstock and always on the Fore-end Iron.

Who created the hammer between 1300-1800?

Neolithic man figured out how to bind a stone head to a wooden handle thousands of years ago. They had every bit as much use for a hammer as for an axe. How on earth could the ancient egyptians have made beaten gold objects without hammers, or carved heiroglyphs? Hammers have been around for thousands of years not just the last 7 or 800 years. Otherwise apologies if I misunderstood your question.

I am attaching wood beams for a porch and cannot find a drill bit to work How do you drill into cement?

To drill into cement you require a masonary bit for your drill. Masonary bits can be bought at any local hardware store or such like. Drill into cement using masonary bit (protects your drill from damage) then push a wall plug into the hole. to secure position and any attachment you wish to add ie woodern beams. I learnt the hard way about following this proceedure being a female that had never changed a plug.

It's also helpful to have a hammer drill. They make a lot of noise, they drill into concrete much faster than a normal drill.

ANS 2 - You will save yourself a lot of time and hard work by renting a good hammer drill like a small Hilti or a medium sized Bosch. You can also find many ways of attaching screws into concrete at the Hilti store. 'HIT' screws in particular , save a lot of time. They combine the screw with a polypropylene shield. You hammer drill the hole and just pound one in -simple.

Why would the motor of a radial arm saw smoke?

It could be that the blade is dull. The motor works hard to turn the blade and consequently producing smoke. Also make sure to keep your cut straight when cutting to prevent blade binding. It could be that there is a bit of saw dust in the motor. I'd try taking the cover off and blow out the motor. Use a paint brush or compressed air. It is a way of telling you it is TOOL TIME! Head to Lowe's of Home Depot and pick up a new saw. I never heard of a better excuse.vbd The motor should NOT smoke, EVEN IF "bogged down," or heavily loaded. Usually the smoke is from blade friction on the workpiece. IF it ACTUALLY is the motor which is the source of the smoke, then there is a severe defect within, and it needs the attention of a professional repair technician at a factory authorized repair center, OR as answer 3 suggests, it is time to replace the power tool.j3h.

What brand of tools is better Snap-on or Craftsman or Mac or SK-Wayne?

It really comes down to a number of things... your own preferences being among them. I won't use anyone else's ratchets but Snap-On's, for example, but I hate their hammers, and prefer Mac's single piece hammers. A lot of air tools for Mac, Cornwell and Matco are made by Ingersoll, whereas Snap-On makes their own, and some are better, some are not. I'm partial to Mac's "Precision Torque" wrenches vs. anyone else's. My second choice for combination wrenches are the "no slip" ones from Carlysle (a NAPA brand).
Craftsman can be a crap shoot, as their tools have been manufactured by various manufacturers over the years... some better than others. But no way is Craftsman better than Mac.
If you think mechanics have homogenous tool sets exclusive to only one brand, that's the case typically with only the highest paid and most eccentric of mechanics... in my own tool set, I have Snap-On, Mac, Matco, Cornwell, King Tony (KT Pro), Craftsman, SK, Proto, GP, Carlysle, and many others.
For my at-home set, for working on my own stuff... it's mostly from Harbor Freight, although I did choose Carlysle for the ratchets and Craftsman and Husky for the wrenches.
Buying professional grade tools is worthwhile for a professional... if you're doing a bit of shade tree mechanic work, you have no use for anything that expensive.

How do you make your Peugeot 504 more stable at high speeds?

What I have done to my 1974 T.I. is ;

Fit the 505 alloy wheels 15 inch by 6 with any good quality 195/60 series tyres (205 size I think is too big for the rim, the tyre tends to walk across the rim width and under hard cornering the tyre tends to rub against the front strut ). Start with tyre pressures 30 lbs in the front 32 at rear and work from there keeping 2 lbs more pressure at the rear than front. With my car I have lowered it 3.5 inches which is I think the maximum you can get away without altering suspension pivot points. Now you will have negative camber at the front wheels so alter the front wheel toe in to no more than 2mm toe OUT. Lastly and very important.... At the rear brake pressure regulator which works off the rear anti roll bar unscrew the adjustment one turn for every inch you lower the car. Unaltered the regulator thinks you have a full load and gives you full brake pressure to the rear brakes...... sideways with rear brake lock up at 160 km is not pleasant !!. I am assuming that the shock absorbers / stabilisers are all good.

Watch out for the little "kick" you get from the rear end when going over bumps on high speed corners. All good fun !. Lower the car, add a spoiler, low profile 18" tyres and a phat bodykit!!! Add rear stabalisers

Why does water drip into your car when the air conditioner is on?

SUGGESTION: CHECK FOR A PLUGGED "CONDENSATE DRAIN TUBE" SOMEWHERE UNDER THE HOOD; PROBABLY CLOSE TO THE HEATER OR AIR CONDITIONER - YOU HAVE PROBABLY NOTICED CARS ON A HOT DAY DRIPPING WATER UNDER WITH THE A/C RUNNING. THIS IS THE WATER THAT IS DRAINING INSIDE YOUR CAR INSTEAD OF RUNNING OUT THE DRAIN TUBE TO THE GROUND. IF YOU LIVE OR PARK IN AN AREA WHERE THERE ARE SMALL TREE LEAVES OR SEEDS DROPPING, THEY CAN ENTER THE HEATER/AIR CONDITIONER'S FRESH AIR INTAKE AND SETTLE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE PLENUM, EVENTUALLY COVERING THE HOLE LEADING TO THE OUTSIDE DRAIN. SAME AS A PLUGGED DOWNPIPE ON HOUSE ROOF GUTTERS. HINT TO FIND THE DRAIN TUBE - TURN ON THE HEATER/AIR FAN WITHOUT ENGINE RUNNING (SO YOU CAN HEAR IT). WITH IT RUNNING, LISTEN UNDER THE HOOD FOR ITS SOUND. THE DRAIN TUBE YOU ARE SEEKING WILL BE SOMEWHERE NEAR AND BELOW THIS AREA; THERE IS A CHANCE YOU CAN CLEAR THE OBSTRUCTION BY BLOWING BACKWARD THRU THE OPEN END OF THE TUBE. CANNOT GUESS WHAT'S ON YOUR CAR BUT USUALLY THESE TUBES ARE APPROXIMATELY 3/4" DIAMETER, 2 - 6" LONG POINTING STRAIGHT DOWN.

What does the lever on the side of a JC Higgins Model 20 do?

I believe it is so you can fire it as a one shot it keeps the next shell from coming out of the tube, you can load another shell by hand.... You are absolutely correct! Not all Mod 20's have that selector but that is what it is for. It prevents another shell from loading into the chamber when the action is moved.

How do you remove a lip ring yourself?

How do you use string level?

Put the string in place at the correct height at one end using a nail or other firm fastener. Hook the string level on the string and use it to insure the string is level before fastening the other end. Often used when building brick walls, fences and when putting in brick sidewalks to measure level.
