Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

How can you keep your small dog safe from owls at night?

I'm shocked your small dog isn't in the house with you! Small dogs shouldn't be left outside! If you don't like you dog in your bedroom or in bed with you then tell the dog to stay on the mat in the kitchen. I can't believe you have done this and I suggest you read up on small dog breeds on www.google.com

How many chickens can one rooster keep fertilized?

A rooster can successfully fertilize eggs from multiple hens. On average, a single rooster can fertilize between 10 to 12 hens, but this can vary based on the breed and age of the rooster, as well as other environmental factors.

Once a male dog has intercourse with a female when she is in heat will he then leave her alone or will he keep bugging her until her full cycle is done?

He'll keep bugging her... For both their safety (they can easily injure one another while attempting to mate) I'd suggest keeping them apart unless you are right there with them, supervising. Especially if either one is a "novice".

Why do dogs bark?

Dogs bark to express their feeling, like we human beings talk to each other and explain our difficulties. They bark because they want to talk to other dogs or people (usually their owners).

They bark for many reasons:

  • To express a need to relieve themselves
  • As a warning to intruders
  • As a territorial announcement to other dogs
  • Because they require sustenance (food or water)
  • They want affection or attention
  • They are cold/hot/otherwise uncomfortable
  • They are startled
  • Other dogs are barking
  • They detect unfamiliar sounds or scents - dogs and other animals have shown that they are sensitive to early signs of storms, tornadoes, and earthquakes
  • One of the cats is in the dog's food dish or the water dish

What should you do if your dog is having sexual activity with your cat?

== == * Sounds unusual, but I have a female and male dog and a cat. When it started I used a spray bottle with cold water in it and gave them blast of it catching them off guard (it's natural for them to do this) and it did the trick in about a week.

What was the dog from which all other dog breeds decended?

The modern dog, as we know it, was descended from its canine cousin, the wolf. Yep, dogs came from wolfs :) It's believed that all present breeds of dog have descended from the Mastiff, or a mastiff type dog, which in turn was decended from the wolf.

Is it okay for rabbits to eat their feces?

Yes, it is normal for rabbits to eat their droppings, although rabbits don't really eat their feces: they eat their cecotropes (also known as cecals or "night droppings").

Feces are round dry droppings seen around the rabbit's territory and in the litter box. A rabbit might sometimes sniff or nibble at a fecal pellet, or might accidentally take on in its mouth while eating cecotropes, but not really eat them.

Cecotropes are often not seen by humans because they're taken straight from the anus, but they look like dark small mushy blobs, sometimes in grape formation, and sometimes they're very smelly. Cecotropes are packed with nutrients that rabbits need to survive. Cecotrophy is a process of re-digestion that allows the rabbit to absorb all the nutrients and get the most out of its food. Rabbits eating cecals is basically the same idea as cows chewing the cud. Baby rabbits eat their mother's cecals as well as drink her milk. Rabbits will redigest their droppings up to as much as 12 times for remaining nutrients.

Can you keep a kelpie dog in a small backyard?

A Kelpie can be kept in a small back yard for a very short time. Kelpies are energetic and sheep herding dogs so they need lots of running space. If you have a small back yard then it's important to get your dog out into a field and let them have a good run (play ball, throw sticks.) You can also join a fun group (club) that has special events once a week for game-playing for Kelpies (and this goes for any sheep-herding dogs.) It's fun and you and your pet will enjoy it. Thought this extra information would help you to understand what your dog is all about: Kelpie Breed History Sheep backing The working Kelpie originated in Australia around the mid 1800's. It is said that the Dingo was thought to have played an early part in the development of the breed but that the Kelpie has no connection with the Border Collie whatsoever. The Border Collie was formed after the Kelpie was established. The breed was mainly developed from strains of dogs working various stock. Numbers today, in Australia, are in excess of 450,000 with most of these being required for work. Breed colours Black Kelpies once fairly common but these days are rarely seen in working dogs. Red and tan very popular and the second most common colour, although numbers may be in decline as some of the black and tan male sires now used for breeding do not carry any red and tan genes. Black and tan is the most common working dog colour in Australia and was considered to be the colour of the first Kelpie that was born around the late 1860's or early 1870's. Less common colours blue, cream and fawn and tan.

What breed of dog has the most documented cases of biting people nationwide?

It may surprise you, but Cocker Spaniels are right near the top of the list... and have been for seven or eight years now. Most of the bites reported tend to be from large dogs, and that's simply because they do the most damage. However, I wouldn't be at all shocked to learn that the real "bite leaders" are small dogs like Toy Poodles, Pomeranians, and Chihuahuas. People get bit by these little guys every day - but no one reports the bites because they aren't serious. There's a big difference between the imprint in your leg left by a Rottie vs. a Shih Tzu.

Dalmatians can often get aggressive and snap, as well as Chow Chows

German Shepherd dogs are at the top of the list, then wolf-hybrids. However, those are only of the reported cases. Bites from small dogs are rarely reported & happen very often.

'Pit' Bull Terriers do not have a 'locking jaw' and in fact lost a bite pressure test as compared to German Shepherds and Rotties. Course, if you want to know which dog produces the most fatalities from their bites, the answer is overwhelmingly pit-bull.

What is wrong with an Oscar you've had for a week if he won't let you get near him and he swims away when you drop in pellets and he'll eat but not near you and hides in his cave or tree?

The Oscar is still in a transition period, or a new world, it takes time to create a bond, look from afar, give the fish some time to adjust to its new home. The good news is the fish is eating, this fish has done some traveling to get to his new home and has been under a lot of stress.

Can specific breeds of dogs develop idiosyncrasies?

Any dog can have idiosyncrasies. It depends how strong the breed is, or if you get the dog from the SPCA or ASPCA. Dogs can have strange habits if they have been abandoned, beaten, neglected, starved, left to fend for itself, or had several owners. Dogs and cats aren't really any different than humans. They feel pain, their feelings get hurt, but unlike humans, pets remain loyal no matter what. If you ever have a dog that has indiosyncrasies work with the dog, go to training with it and give it lots of love and support and by all means some fun such as playing in a park and throwing a ball, or a simple quiet walk somewhere. Let them become part of your life to a degree of course. Let the dog know he/she can trust you. With time and patience there isn't much you can't train a dog to do.

Learn about the breed of dog. If you plan on getting a dog from the SPCA or ASPCA remember that the dog has to get use to you. If you find they are not well trained then you and the dog should go to training schools (there are classes all over the place you can take and even ask your vet where these training classes are.) It takes time for the dog to get use to the owner (and family) and time for you to get to know the dog. Don't just get a dog and then leave it alone right away. You have to bond with this dog, so try getting a dog while you are on holidays and can spend sometime with it.

I walk my 2 dogs every single day no matter what the weather. I throw sticks or a ball and we just have a fun time. When they are good I praise them, and they are well trained and listen to commands when I speak in a soft voice. I love them, cuddle them and they are very comfortable and no problem at all. Dogs love it when you get on the floor (or grass) with them and tussle gently with them. You are down to their level. Both my husband and I do this every single night (we make the time no matter how busy our schedule is.) A happy dog is a dog that will cause you few problems.

Are dogs just stretching when they bow forward and backward?

The bow you are speaking of is actually a way dogs show love and respect. Look closely at the context when the dog does it. Animal behaviorists have a name for this bow - I think it is called the "praetorian bow" or something. They tend to do it as a friendly greeting, to show gratitude, or sometimes when they are relaxed or sleepy. But, I believe this is a natural canine behavior and might be something they'd do within the pack. I suspect it relates to Alpha status - that is, they bow to the Alpha or to another member of the pack out of love and respect.

For example, my friend's German Shepherd is OCD obsessed with her ball - in a bad way. The other day I took her ball away from her and gently told her we were done for the day. She did that bow to me. I believe this was gratitude for me relieving her of her "job" (the ball).

Unfortunately, I can't provide more information about this or sources. But, I have heard about it from dog experts over the years.

***

Sometimes, but it also can mean they want to go for a walk or want you to play with them. A good belly rub works all the time.

It can also be whats known as a calming signal.. It could mean they are uncomfortable. But you need to look at the contexts to be able to conclude on why they are stretching..If say they are lying down and then get up and stretch..they are just stretching..if they are out playing with another dog and stretch it could mean that they are uncomfortable.

Sometimes when a dog goes into a forward play bow and maintains that position for more than a few seconds their stomach/bowels may be upset or causing them pain. That position can relieve some of the pressure and lower their discomfort.

If you have a dog that does forward bow often and for longer that it would take to stretch, especially after meals, they may have a food allergy to what they are being fed. Or possibly a more serious issue that requires a vet visit/medications.

How can you stop your dog from rubbing his bum on the carpet?

Dogs get hemorrhoids too. Take him to a vet. Sounds like impacted anal glands. Dogs have two glands next to their anus. They must be emptied regularly (during baths, etc.). Your vet can also do this for you. Usually dragging his bottom is a sign of this. Simply emptying those glands should solve the problem. The majority of the time a dog drags it's butt across the capet is that is has worms. I do not reccoment squeezing your dog's anal glands until your dog proves he needs help with it. You will know when your dog has a problem with his anal glands because they will swell. If you do it once for your dog it will lose it's ability to do it on it's own. Only mess with them if you absolutely have to!!! - x1

Why do you have to keep your dog inside after it gets a bath?

Dogs produce natural oil to cover their coats to repell water, dust, and dirt. When they are washed not only is the dirty removed, but so is the oil. As their coats dry it produces this oil. Also when the dog is wet their skin is exposed dirt sticks better to wet / damp skin then to dry skin, then the hair will dry over the dirt. This can lead to infection and 'dry rot' of the skin.

When bringing home a new puppy why would an existing dog begin licking everything like pillows and couches?

It's no different than if you have a 3 year old and bring a new baby home. The child, in most cases will be a little jealous. You've had your dog for awhile and now you are bringing in a puppy and making a big, big fuss over it (easy to do I know.) When I introduced a new pup into our family (with an adult dog) I always took the time to spend a one-on-one time with my older pet. I would often take my adult dog for a fun walk on the dyke by the river for about 1/2 hour to an hour and it was just Daisy and me! LOL In time, if you continue this routine your adult dog will be fine. The dog is upset and that's why the licking of pillows, couches, etc. Please spend some time with the adult dog. Even if one of the kids in the family or your husband/wife could bond more with the adult dog this licking would stop. Good luck Marcy Jelousy maybe..... Marking Territory and letting the new guy know who's boss, i would think. my five year old chihuahua does it religiously. i don't try to stop it because it's better than him pissin all over the house. you handle it however you want... just remember it's better than the alternative. ghost-luv-u: i'd say its obviously jelsous and marking it territory. as saidabove its better than him peeing.

When you remove dog pee odor will they still pee there?

Not necessarily. Removing the odor may reduce the likelihood of the dog peeing in the same spot again, but it is not a guarantee. It's important to also address any underlying reasons for the inappropriate urination behavior to prevent it from happening again. Consulting with a veterinarian or animal behaviorist may be helpful in addressing the issue comprehensively.

Where does eucalyptus come from?

Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia - both the mainland and its island state of Tasmania. They have been introduced to the continents of Europe, North and South America, Africa, and the countries of China and India.

Eucalyptus trees have different species which live in almost all environments. There are varieties which live in arid areas, or above the snowline, or in wetlands, or just in ordinary bushland or forest.

Backward and forward movement a shaking or quivering?

The movement you are describing sounds like trembling or shaking. This can be caused by fear, cold, or excitement, and typically involves rapid, involuntary movements back and forth or up and down. If it's persistent, it may be a sign of an underlying health issue and should be evaluated by a medical professional.

How do you stop a dog barking at fireworks?

Short term Quick Fixes:-Play! Depending on your dog's level of anxiety (pacing vs. curled up trembling) simply distracting him may be the best course of action. Play, sing songs, exercise the dog as much as you can to try and wear it out. Help your dog associate thunder with a fabulous playtime!

-Crate your dog or move their bedding into a enclosed space like a closet. A dog who feels "safe" will be less anxious, and a "den" is the instinctual place for a dog to feel safe. It may help to cover your dog's crate with a blanket or sheet to create a den feeling.

-Create as much white noise as you can. Fans, TV's, radios, etc. Try to drown out the majority of the sound.

-Find a T-shirt that fits the dogs chest tightly and put it on them. No one knows why this helps, but many owners swear this makes a difference.

-Over the counter sedatives (Like rescue remedy) or veterinary prescriptions like Ace or Valium are a good short term treatment- although not available in an emergency. If your dog is severely anxious, try to keep a stash on hand.

- Short term and long term, one of the most important things for an owner to do is not to coddle the dog. Cooing and petting are both"rewarding" actions for a dog- they are used as rewards in training- so what are you training your dog to do when you respond to his anxiety with petting and cooing?

Rather than babying your scared dog, try:
  • singing a silly song
  • sqeaking toys
  • taking the time to run the dog through his or her tricks.
  • yawning repeatedly (really). make big, loud, exaggerated yawns- your dog will see your relaxation and respond.
Long Term SolutionsLong term solutions to storm and firework anxiety revolve around retraining your dog to associate loud noises with good things.

For dogs scared of "bangs", check out Dale Burrier's article, "The Paper Bag Game - Desensitizing Your Dog to Loud Noises"

For other anxieties, try desensitization CDs. You can by CDs that contain all the common sounds that dogs are afraid of. You can begin playing these CDs at a barely audible level at meal times, play times, and all the "happiest" times of the day. Over the course of weeks you can turn the volume up and after several months your dog should respond to the sound thunder or fireworks with interest or even excitment.

Does a giraffe lay down?

Yes, giraffes do lay down to sleep and rest. They typically do this for short periods of time, as lying down for extended periods can make it difficult for them to get back up due to their long legs and neck.

Giveme one example of endocytosis?

One example of endocytosis is receptor-mediated endocytosis, where specific molecules bind to receptor proteins on the cell membrane and are subsequently engulfed by the cell to be brought inside for further processing or signaling.

Why do dog shiver when they a lightning storm?

Thunder scares dogs for many reasons. Number one, their hearing is so much better than ours which makes the noise ten times louder. Also, the fact that they cannot see it probably makes them scared as well. My oldest dog was absolutely terrified of thunder because a tree had fallen over in our yard during a storm. She thought that every time thunder hit, a tree would fall. Now, after many years, she is not as afraid.

How do you calm worried Dogs when they're scared of fireworks?

Create a safe and quiet space for your dog to retreat to, like a room with no windows. Play calming music or white noise to drown out the sound of fireworks. Consider using a calming aid such as a ThunderShirt or pheromone diffuser. Stay with your dog to provide comfort and reassurance.

What is the biggest a Maltese poodle will get?

It depends if it is a miniature Maltese or a normal Maltese.

You can't tell the difference when they are puppies - but a look at their mother / father should give you a clue.

A fully grown miniature could grow to around 30 cms long - whilst a normal Maltese will be twice this.

Although the Maltese has been added to the NSW 'dangerous dogs' list, if they are treated firmly from young, then they can me very loving little dogs quite safe around children. The problem (I suspect) is that they are 'lap dogs' and thus are frequently spoiled by their owners giving them the idea that they are the leader of the pack (i.e. higher in the pecking order than the owners!!!).

Hope this helps.

Why can't your butt become fatter?

The size of our buttocks is determined by genetics, muscle development, and body fat distribution. While it is possible to develop and tone the muscles in the buttocks through targeted exercises, the overall size of the buttocks may not change drastically due to genetic factors that influence where our body stores fat.
