How is mean sea level defined?

There is a point in Cornwall, in the UK, where there is a hatch in a building and underneath is a mark from which mean sea level for the entire world is calculated. It is in Newlyn, I think.

Answer

MSL is the average between high and low tides, and is a datum point used to desribe the height of tides, although the actual measurement is quite complex. The Newlyn mentioned above is the datum point for the UK, not the world. Other countries have their own datum point.

How tall is San Juan Hill in Cuba?

I walked up San Juan Hill, just outside of Santiago de Cuba, in July of 2001. A big fan of Teddy Roosevelt, was something I just had to do while there as a " tourista. " I am estimating it to be between 200 and 250 feet high. I just walked up casually alongside my Cuban girlfriend, but of course T.R. rode his horse, with bullets whistling past his head as he led his troops. As great a hero as America has ever known.

Took me no more than 25 minutes to walk up,..but saw to monuments to TR, but still glad I did what I did. Me and T.R.,..imagine that ! ( smile )
