What could cause a 2001 Ford Focus to start but idles rough changed coil pack codes say number 1 and 4 cylinder misfires HELP?

First thing, check your vacuum hoses. Second, unhook your battery for about an hour, then hook it back up. The computer may need to reset itself. After that, you're on your own.

  • The most common vacuum hose issue with a focus is the PCV hose wher it goes to the back of the intake manifold. You should check that, but ususlly if you have a vacuum hose problem, it won't show up as a P0301 and a p0304 fail code, like you have. It will ususlly be a p0171 which is a lean code.

Since your fail codes are 301 and 304, you should actually check to see if you have ignition fire to the #1 and #4 cylinders. Evidentally you already checked that and didn't have fire, otherwise, I wouldn't think you would have replaced the coil pack, without doing that simple test. But in case you didn't, then you need to. If you have no fire to those two cyliders, and you are sure your plug wires are good, then likely there is something wrong in the PIP signal to the coil pack from the PCM. On the coil pack, there is a connector into the side with three wires. One is a shared PIP(pulsed ground signal) to the towers for cyls #1 and #4, one is a PIP to #2 and #3, and the third wire is a common power input. PIP is a pulsed ground from the PCM. The PCM pulses the ground "on" everytime it wants to fire either the #1/#4 cylinders, or the #2/#3 cylinders. So the #1 and the #4 plugs both fire at the same time, and so do the #2 and #3 plugs. The cylinder that isn't on it's compression stroke just receives a harmless "waste" spark.

If you DO have spark to these plugs, then you could have bad plugs. But if you DO NOT have bad plugs, then your problem IS NOT ignition. If your problem is not ignition, then you could have fuel injector issues or engine compression issues.

One thing is certain. When you find and fix the problem, you will know it. The engine will straighten up and run fine. No "resetting" of the PCM is necessary, other than to turn off the check engine light. "Reseting" the PCM does not fix problems. That is a common misconception.

You have what is referred to as a "misfire" evidentally on the numbers 1 and 4 cylinders. Four things cause a misfire: ignition failure(spark), fuel failure(lack of fuel), engine compression failure to those cylinders, or coolant getting into those two cyliders which is causing the fuel to not combust.

RECAP: Start with spark which is coil, plugs, or plug wires. If you don't have spark, find out why. Is it plugs, lug wires, or do you have no PIP signal on that circuit to those two coil towers.

Second, if spark is not your problem, then check engine compression. Get an engine compression guage and test all four cyliders. All will be around 150 PSI if they are good. Any cylinders that are under 100 PSI are a problem.

Third, make sure all four fuel injectors are firing.

Do those three thiings, and I'll bet somewhere along the line, you will find your problem.

How do you replace shocks on a 1995 Buick Roadmaster estate wagon?

Wow

Tough job. I replaced all the shocks on my 95 Estate Wagon about 2 years ago. The front shocks were fairly easy. But the rear shocks were very difficult. I had help from a friend who is a professional mechanic, access to his tools and we had the car up on a lift. It took the two of us almost 3 hours to change the shocks. With four hands squeeezed in around the exhaust pipes and wrenches with flexible heads, we finally got the top shock mounts installed and tightened. I was never able to find out if there was a hatch under the back seat to get to those upper shock nounts. It would sure help. I hope to never do the rear shocks again!

Good luck

What can happen if you do not replace a faulty temp sensor on a 2002 ford focus and how big of a job is it and how much does it cost?

If you dont replace a faulty O2 sensor you will not pass emissions, you probably are experiencing bad gas mileage as well. Sensor replacement is usually easy and straight forward. Somewhere in your exhaust pipe the sensor just merely screws into the exhaust. You will need a special O2 sensor socket readily available in any auto parts store for about 10 dollars. 02 Sensors usually run between 60-80 dollars but can run much higher in some cases(heated O2 sensors cost much more) I have a 1997 Explorer and found the O2 sensors in the manifold pipe under the drivers side of the vehicle. It was very easy to replace, I USED A VISE GRIP WRENCH, IT WAS VERY TIGHT AT FIRST, SO I LIGHTLY TAP THE VISE GRIP WITH A HAMMER, IT THEN CAME OUT EASYLY. THE SENSOR ( MOTORCRAFT ) COST ME $62.00 + TAX. - NICK L.

Why does my 2005 ford focus engine control fuse keep blowing?

Fuses That "Blow" Repeatedly

Fuses and Circuit Breakers are safety devices designed and installed in electrical circuits TO PROTECT the conductors [wires] from short circuits and overload conditions which can cause extreme overheating that can result in damage to the insulation and the conductors, and worse, the possibility of a FIRE which could destroy the vehicle, house, or other structure.

When a fuse and replacement fuses blow, especially if it happens repeatedly, is an indication of an UNSAFE CONDITION in that circuit, usually a short.

The proper "fix" is for a qualified technician, who knows what he/she is doing, to troubleshoot the circuit, find and identify the defect, and make proper repair [s], BEFORE replacing the fuse again [with the properly sized fuse or circuit breaker]. Some ignorant few will suggest installing a larger fuse or breaker to solve the problem, BUT that will only amplify the problem, not solve it.

Do not follow "bad" advice and install a larger fuse in a misguided attempt to correct the problem. To install a larger fuse would almost guarantee damage to the wiring and an electrical system fire.

Where is the PCV valve in a 2002 Ford Focus model?

Raise the hood look down right under the radiator hose on the back of the engine (thats the driver side and it stuck into the block. If you have ramps to drive up on you get a better picture. Its got a curved hose going to it which is short, but the hose will bend when you pull it out. takes about 1 minute

Added: Yes, and it's a very tight spot. It's easier to get to from underneath.
