Why would a 2005 FreeStar sometimes make a squealing sound during driving but not while idling or braking?

I have a 2004 freestar that also makes a squealing or "whistling" as I call it. I've had the ford mechanics look at it and they said the brakes are fine. I think it has something to do with the alloy wheels. The whistling starts on our van after it goes above 35 mph. As far as I can tell it's not a major problem just an annoyance.

How do you change the air filter on a 2002 Chrysler Sebring Convertible V6 27 liter?

I have a 2002 LXi convertible with a 2.7 liter engine I just changed the air filter on. It is a bit of a PITA to do, because there is not a lot of room in there, but overall not too bad. On my car there are no bolts or clamps to loosen to get to the a cover off the air filter housing to get to the filter. Instead, on the engine side of the housing where the air boot/hose goes into the filter housing there are two tabs on the boot/hose. You will need to press these in to pull the air filter out. On my 2.7 LXi, there isn't a lot of room, so using a screwdriver, I loosened the band on the air intake to the engine, took the boot/hose off the engine intake, CAREFULLY (the tabs tend to catch on things) moved it under wires hoses, etc, pushed the tabs in and with some CAREFUL maneuvering pulled the boot and air filter out. It does take some wiggling and a lot of double checking to make sure you aren't bumping into stuff. The air filter is a cylinder which plugs into the boot/hose. I found I had to partially insert the new filter into the filter housing to have room to be able to insert the new filter into the boot/hose. Then it is a matter of CAREFULLY maneuvering everything back in place, re-attaching the hose to the engine intake and tightening the band down. One last caution, make sure when you tighten the band you keep the screw accessible for the next time. My 2.4 Liter 2002 Sebring has essentially the same procedure, although there is more room.

What does the exclamation light in your 2004 Ford Freestar mean?

This will depend on the symbol that surrounds the exclamation. There is a small one with the brake light warning, and one that may be in the tire pressure warning, with the third one surrounded by what looks like a gear. That one is a transaxle warning and you should take your vehicle in for servicing.

Where is the engine control module - ECM - on a Ford Freestar or Mercury Monterey?

The ECM (Ford calls it the powertrain control module) is mounted to the firewall under the cowl panel on the passenger side.

To get to it first disconnect the battery ground cable then the plastic cowl panel must be removed along with the windshield wiper motor, the cabin air filter if equipped, and other things attached to the cowl panel. Remove the windshield wiper arms first and don't forget to disconnect the battery ground cable.

When you can see it, first loosen the bolt and remove the large electrical connector. Then remove the 2 retaining nuts and remove the PCM.

To install, reverse the removal steps. The mounting nut torque is 5 Nm and the electrical connector bolt torque is 7 Nm.

Be careful, the PCM is expensive.

Where is the fuel filter on a 2004 Ford Freestar located?

Inside the frame rail, about 3/4 of the way back, about the size of a coke can. May have a guard that hides it. It is underneath the van on the driver's side near the rear edge of the driver's door. Follow the fuel line coming out of the gas tank to it. Since the Freestar is just a new name Ford put on the Windstar, you can use the information from the "Related Questions" below for filter replacement instructions.

How do you replace rear brake pads on 2004 Ford Freestar?

rear brakes on a 2004 freestar you need to push in and turn the piston in as the

rear calipers act also as the hand brakes, there is a special tool that you can buy

so that will push and turn at the same time.

OR - what I just did - get a 5-inch C-clamp, and tighten it up bit by bit, turning the piston bit by bit with a pair of channellocks. I turned the piston clockwise; I don't know if it matters which way. But after you've got it opened up enough to accommodate the new pads, turn the piston some more until one of the slots in it faces the front. It has to fit around a little post on the back of the inside pad.

NOTE: my Freestar is a 2005.

Improved answer - The second person here has decided he will do it the hard way. -The proper tool is cheap, and yes, it DOES matter which way you turn it in (Clockwise only. ) This method is totally stupid as you will score the piston with channel locks - and I doubt you will get it all the way in..

Well - "totally stupid" seems a bit strong. Scoring the piston with Channellocks isn't really that likely, since it doesn't take all that much force to get it to turn. I performed the C-clamp-and-Channellocks procedure over a year ago, no leakage, working well.
