What was George Washington's greatest achievement?

== == That's hard to say, he had such a remarkable life. His later work as president of the Constitutional Convention and President of the United States and the historical precedents he established in twice relinquishing power when he could have held it, would not have happened had he not first won that war.

Why did george washington decide to attack the british at yorktown?

Washington was not experienced in bombard-type battles and invasions (siege warfare). He instead went to General Rochambeau of the French Army for advice, and Rochambeau suggested that Yorktown was the better option as it was next to water (The Chesapeake Bay/ Atlantic). This was better as French ships could surround Yorktown and the land forces along with artillery could bombard the city by using fortified trenches. This was a more strategic option rather than attacking a fully armed and fortified New York City where General Clinton's forces took command. This option instead of attacking Yorktown would be disastrous and therefore cause the remaining American forces along with French forces to sustain many casualties.

What were the grievances of the American troops who mutineed during the American Revolution?

The common soldier was underpaid (if paid at all), suffered in the cold, and died of sickness. During The Revolution, a small mutiny of soldiers took place in the New Jersey Line, involving two hundred men who defied their officers and started out for the state capital in Trenton. General George Washington, with 600 of his troops marched on the mutineers and surrounded and disarmed them. The tree ringleaders were put on trial immediately, in the field. One was pardoned, and two were shot by firing squads made up of their friends, who wept as they pulled the triggers. It was "an example," Washington said. Earlier that same year a similar mutiny took place. Afraid that the rebellion would spread to his own forces, Washington ordered General Anthony Wayne not to use force, but suggested Wayne gather a list of the soldiers' grievances. He then sent Knox rushing to New England on his horse to get three months' pay for the soldiers. And during The American Revolution, privates in the army earned $6.66 a month, while colonels earned $75.00 a month. FYI- I got all of this information from Howard Zinn's classic national bestseller book A Peoples History Of The United States 1492 - Present. He is a wonderful historian. I hope my information has helped.

How many slaves did George Washington own?

Over the course of his life, George Washington owned hundreds of slaves. As a teenager, he inherited about 11 slaves from his father, and owned about 36 slaves at the time of his marriage.

His 1759 marriage to the widow Martha Custis brought at least 85 more slaves to Mount Vernon, but these belonged to her family, and were referred to as "dower slaves". With his wife's wealth, he bought more land and slaves.

Washington paid taxes on 49 slaves in 1760, and on 135 slaves in 1774. [NOTE: These numbers do not include the "dowers".] His last recorded purchase of a slave was in 1772.

The 1786 Mount Vernon slave census lists 103 Washington slaves and 113 "dowers".

The 1799 Mount Vernon slave census lists 124 Washington slaves and 153 "dowers".

Washington freed his own slaves following his 1799 death through his will. The "dower slaves" were not freed, but inherited by Martha Washington's grandchildren following her 1802 death.

None. It won't be until the 1800's that women will be allowed to go to college. It wasn't unitl 1890 that the first woman was able to attend medical school. The rights for women has been a long hard struggle. Women didn't get the right to vote until 1920 with the 19th amendment. The first woman fighter pilot wasn't until the early 1990's and still we only have a few women in Congress. Women have been making strides in buisness, but there is only a handful of women CEO"S today.
