What are the most common reasons for a pilot to abort a landing?
I would think the most common reason for abort landing is due to air traffic or ground traffic that makes it unsafe to land. But this type of abort would be well before the aircraft touches down on the runway. The newest aircraft have a check to ensure that the flaps and slats are configured correctly for takeoff. If the wing on one side is not configured like the other, then the warning system will give a verbal warning to the pilot and he will stop the aircraft. Sometimes this is caused by a sensor that fails or goes out of rig. The flap may be deployed but the aircraft sensor is bad.
Rotor blades are on helicopters. They are the long narrow parts above the fuselage (cabin) .When these rotate they impart 'lift' to the helicopter.
What aircraft hovers like a helecopter?
The Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey, Harrier, F-35, anything with VTOL.
Were black hawk helicopters flown in the Vietnam war?
No The Black Hawk helicopter has the military designation of UH-60. It was made by Sikorsky late in the 1970's to replace the Bell UH-1H. The Bell UH-1C, UH-1D and other versions for Air Force(UH-1F) were first helicopters used in large quantities during the Viet Nam War.
How many Marine helicopters were shot down from 1965 to 1970?
to be honest only the US military holds that information but deeper research might give you the answer. My research gives me the answer of roughly 42, but more heli's may have been destroyed in different operations.
Can a helicopter freeze in mid air?
If by "freeze" you mean "hover in place". Yes, a skilled pilot can hold the aircraft so still it appears to be figuratively frozen in place. The skill required is like that needed to balance an egg on a spoon...with the spoon turned upside down.
Who's body is in the helicopter in Apocalypse Now Redux?
In "Apocalypse Now Redux," the body found in the helicopter is that of Colonel Kurtz, portrayed by Marlon Brando. The character is a rogue U.S. Army officer who has gone AWOL and established a cult-like presence in the jungle during the Vietnam War. His death signifies the culmination of Captain Willard's mission and the dark exploration of morality and madness throughout the film.
Is it safe to fly in a helicopter pregant?
What do you think?? No, It is not due to the cravings, constantly wanting to go to the bathroom.
How did helicopters change from the olden days to the new days?
The first human lifting helicopters were multi rotor craft where two rotors generating lift cancelled out each other's torque.
The earliest man carrying helicopters were flown by Frenchmen Jaques and Lois Breguet and also Paul Cornu. The Breguet craft flew tethered but Cornu's craft lifted off untethered in 1907.
The first military helicopter, the Austro-Hungarian PKZ-2 had contra-rotating blades and flew in 1918, demonstrated in front of military officials and specifically intended as an combat observation platform. Other craft were developed through the 1920s and achieved long flights of many kilometers but the first highly practical Helicopter was the German FockeWulf FW61. It had two main rotors like a Chinook, but mounted side by side rather than fore and aft. It was developed into the Combat Fa223 which was used in WW2 for rescues, Vehicle lifting and crashed aircraft recovery.
The countermeshing Flettner 282 was used for naval reconnaissance and submarine spotting and was used for artillery spotting on the Eastern Front. The flettner 282, the world's first production helicopter still holds the record of most mass lifted per engine horsepower. No helicopter since has surpassed it in efficiency or ease of handling.
Modern Helicopters based on Igor Sikorsky's single main rotor designs are more difficult to fly than the inherently balanced Flettner design that was perfected earlier and flew first. The design that Sikorsky popularised is less efficient as it uses a tail rotor and consumes around 20% of the engine power just to try to stop the craft spinning out of control. Most helicopter fatalities result from failures of this inefficient system. Being the main allied helicopter design of ww2, despite it's inferior capabilities, the aggressive Sikorsky and Bell companies solved most of their control difficulties and large military contracts helped to dominate the last 40 years of helicopter development. Attempts to modernise the helicopter focus on a return to the earlier more efficient system of having two counter-rotating main rotors
a convex molding having a series of members separated by indentations, as a bead and reel.
How do you reduce the weight of a helicopter?
Remove fuel and or the passengers. Yes, you can remove fuel by selecting engines that are more fuel efficient OR design rotor blades that produce more lift, thus allowing smaller engines requiring less fuel. Some helicopters are 2-engine. This has benefits of redundacy but the engines, gearbox and controls add more weight. The Transmission is a major part of the helicopter and many are made out of Magnesium alloy. During design, the engineer will consider building parts our of composite material which includes fiber-glass (as used in boats) or graphic-composite or even plastics. Seats are made with lighter material that is designed for shock attenuation in a crash. Landing gear can be made lighter using composite structure that is designed to crush during a crash.
Why do people duck their heads coming out a helicopter?
If people don't duck their heads the spead of the blades can cut their head off.
Do UK air ambulance helicopters have a winch?
No, not normally. If a winch is required then the search and rescue service from the RAF are called in.
What military bases have AH-64 Apache helicopters?
All installations that have elements of the US Army Air Combat Wing, Air Cavalry, Air Reconisance, and air units that support ground troop operations may have Apaches assigned to them. It would be difficult to narrow this down without internal information from the Department of the Army or the DoD.
What is the salary of a helicopter pilot in US?
This really depends on the type of job that the pilot is doing. Helicopter pilots are used for such a wide variety of jobs but the average salary ranges from $45,000 to $90,000. Some jobs may even pay less while others have the potential to pay higher. There are so many different jobs out there for helicopter pilots, it is a hard question to answer without being more specific.
How fast do helicopter roter blades spin?
The speed of helicopter rotor blades through the air is limited by the speed of sound (approx. 760Mph) at which point the pressure wave disrupts the airflow at the blade tip (which is moving through the air faster than the blade root). So the larger the rotor diameter (the longer the blades), the lower the allowable RPM (the slower they 'spin')
What is the range of the Apache attack helicopter?
Around 3 hours, (5 max) at 200 MPH (cruise speed). Flight time will vary depending on the weight, conditions, how many external fuel tanks are on it, and the model. On long missions, special tankers will drive to a certain location to refuel the apache. Remember, they still need the fuel to make it back home.
What type of helicopter was marine 1 during president reagan's term?
Marine One is the callsign of any Marine Corps helicopter carrying the President - it's not just one designated aircraft. As for the executive helicopters, there was a whole fleet of them, which, during Regan's term, consisted of Sikorsky VH-3A and VH-3D helicopters, which were variants of the Sikorsky H-3/S-61.
Why military helicopters were flying over Chicago?
Well, some people had been saying that they were carrying president Barack Obama to Chicago and some had been saying they were flying over Chicago for the movie Transformers 3. These answers are wrong. The military helicopters were flying over Chicago for both, carrying the president and they were also there for the movie Transformers 3: The Dark of the moon.
How much money did helicopters cost when they were first invented?
