It is difficult to provide an exact population figure for Scotland during this time period, as data is limited. Estimates suggest the population of Scotland was likely in the tens of thousands, with a majority living in rural areas and engaged in agriculture and pastoralism. They were responsible for collecting taxes, maintaining law and order, and managing the land and its resources within their jurisdiction. Ross likely felt conflicted and burdened when he informed Macduff about the fate of his family. He may have experienced a mix of guilt, sorrow, and the responsibility of delivering such tragic news to Macduff.

As Macduff was going to wake King Duncan he discovered that King Duncan had been killed.
