What causes rattling pipes?

This problem is caused by the water lines not being properly isolated. It can be easily fixed but only if your water lines are accesible. It usually means that either in one or many places your water lines come into contact with the wood of your floor joists. All you need to do is get plastic pipe hangers that go between your water lines and your joists.

  • You might need to install an anti-bounce device into plumbing. It has to do with harmonic bounce.
  • A water hammer arrester will help solve pipe shudders due to quick closing water valves in your home.

My thought is the rattling pipes need to be clamped down securely to some wood trusses. You cut water on and it's rushing down the pipe. You cut it off and the flow is abruptly stopped causing the force of that flow to crash but try to continue it's movement and actually make the pipe physically move. Empty sealed vertical water pipes used to be installed in water lines to create an air cushioning. Now days there is some kind of short lasting air pressure regulator called for attachment to the water heater. *You should have water hammer arrestors installed at your clothes washer and dishwasher. These are quick-closing appliances that create water hammer. You can purchase the ones for your clothes washer that will install between the hose bibbs and the waterline hose going to the washer. The one for the dishwasher(if you have one) would have to be installed inline and are different from the ones I just described, are usually installed under the kitchen sink.*

Before you purchase anything though, check for a simple cause first. If your home was built during the 60's or later and has metal pipes, look near your laundry tub/sink. You'll hopefully will see two air chambers which are vertical pipes about a foot long or so [unless the builder cut corners]. When these are full of air they will dampen/eliminate the pipe rattle when water is shut off quickly. Over time these air chambers fill with water [become water logged] and fail to dampen. The fix for this is to simply shut off your water supply and open up ALL faucets on ALL floors to let all your pipes drain out. This will allow the air chambers to again fill with air and could very likely cure your pipe rattle dilemma.

Another cause of pipes rattling or shaking could be undersized piping. My friends 3 bay auto shop and kiosk is all piped in 1/2" so when a few or more taps are running everything's fighting for water. It gets prettty redonk. When only a couple taps run its fine.

Does a shower valve need replaced if the water in the shower is lukewarm and the water in the kitchen at the same time is hot?

For Moen, there is a part called a "posi temp" and this can be replaced to manage the hot water. You may need a specialized tool called a puller. There is an amusing You Tube with Steven Lavmoniere that shows the process to do this.

Maybe. If it is a Moen or other type of single handle shower valve, try changing the cartridge first. If this doesn't work, you need a new shower valve.

ANS2 - Shower valves of all types will clog up with any bits of sediment or rust in the system. This is very common. Take the valve apart and check carefully inside.

How do you eliminate bees that go into little holes along the roof of a garage?

kill the bees by slathering honey on your drive-way and spray any bee killer on the honey and they will eat it and die. It is a little risky but when I tried it it worked and plus it saved me a bundle on extermination fees

Can you keep your windows open while the air conditioner is on?

Sure you can. But why would you? Kinda defeats the purpose of A/C. Actually, at highway speed, a modern car uses less fuel with the A/C on and windows up than with the A/C off, windows down.

How can you efficiently use a natural fireplace to heat a home and what are types or brands of fans to use to blow the heat so it won't escape up the chimney?

Besides having a fireplace insert with blower installed. There is very little you can do to help a wood burning fireplace be an effective heat producer for your home. Here are a couple of items that may help, but keep in mind fireplaces by design tend to leak interior air when they are dormant and are inefficient at heating your homes interior when you use them. When the fireplace is dormant:

1) Inflatable damper If you use your fireplace at all it is likely that your damper is not in prime condition. The US Department of Energy says that on average 15% of a homes heat loss is through the fireplace damper. Dampers are made of metal and they are heated and cooled regularly so they tend to warp and corrode over time. You can use a chimney balloon or inflatable damper to seal the chimney off air tight and stop this type of heat loss. 2) Tight fitting glass fireplace doors

Installing tight fitting fireplace doors can help you control the amount of inside air your fireplace has access to while it is burning. However, since they are not an air tight device they are not very efficient at stopping heat loss when the fireplace is dormant. Unfortunately, using glass doors actually reduces the amount of radiant heat your fireplace can cast into the home. 3) Chimney Top Dampers

This is a particularly usefully product if you have no damper on your fireplace at all. This damper is installed on the top your your chimney like a cap and it has a spring loaded closure system that allows you to close the cap when you are not using the fireplace. This helps to prevent the massive heat loss caused by a chimney that is always open.

However, There is one known negative issue to this solution. Since you are closing your chimney from the top you are still allowing much home heat to rise and fill the chimney. This air eventually cools and sinks and can create a slight cold draft sensation at the hearth. Furthermore, it can make your fireplace give off a foul odor since the fumes from the ash and creosote deposits in the chimney are not allowed to exit the chimney. After years of regular use a locktop damper can warp [Since it is made of metal] and become less efficient. This usually takes longer to happen than a standard damper though since it is further from the heat source. Retain heat when the fireplace is being used:

1) Burn Dry Wood:

You would be surprised how much energy and BTUs are robbed from a fire if you are using under seasoned wood. Most hard woods will properly dry after 24 months of being stacked in a dry environment with at least some air circulation (ie a yard shed or a garage. Some more dense and sappy wood can take longer. Wood that has too much moisture tends to bubble and sizzle when burned and also it creates a terrible moist creosote collection that is hard on your chimney. It often also makes the room smell bad after it is burned and occasionally it will not burn all the way down to ashes. 2) Iron Firebacks

Iron Firebacks have been used to cast radiant heat from a fireplace into a room for centuries. Some more recent developments in stainless steal have some manufacturers making light weight stainless firebacks that work the same as their heavy antique counterparts do. Firebacks work in two ways they retain and release heat after the fire has gone down, and they help to reflect heat outward during the warmest part of the burn. They are not terribly effective at real energy savings but they are certainly better than nothing. 3) Heatalators

This is a brand name for a product that is made by many different manufacturers and often refereed to as a grate heater. The concept is usually the same though. Some steel tubes with an internally mounted fan are mounted or set in the fireplace around the location of the burn. The tubes heat during the burn and a fan blows the heated air through the tubes and out into the room. They are mildly effective at harnessing the BTUs that the fire would normally spit out the chimney. They also allow a person to keep the glass doors of the fireplace closed and still enjoy the heat of the fire.

How long should a roll of toilet paper last?

According to a new website called “How much toilet paper?” a standard pack of four rolls will last just about a month if you’re someone who makes two bathroom visits per day. Of course, this is just an estimate, and results will vary based on individual households and habits. Also keep in mind that these days, more people are staying home and thus using more of their house supply than they normally would.

Toilet paper manufacturer Georgia-Pacific LLC told TODAY in an email: “The average U.S. household (2.6 people) uses 409 equivalized regular rolls per year. Using our own calculations, staying at home 24-7 would result in ~140% increase vs. average daily usage.”

“Therefore, to last approximately 2 weeks, a 2-person household would need ~9 double rolls, or ~5 mega rolls. A 4-person household would need ~17 double rolls, or ~9 mega rolls to last approximately 2 weeks.”

How can you remove vomit stains from your carpet?

First remove any solids and gently blot up as much liquid as you can. Apply carpet stain cleaner (test on hidden part of carpet), and let sit for a few minutes. Use a clean, white, cloth and 1 teaspoon mild, non-alkali detergent and 1/2 pint lukewarm water to blot up the rest of the stain and cleaner. If the stain remains, try a solution of 1 tablespoon ammonia and 1 cup warm water to clean the area --again just blot, so you do not spread the stain.

Try renting a rug doctor, or you may have to call someone who cleans carpets.

Why sea water is not used for house hold chores?

Well mostly because of its high salt content.

They wil have the seperate the salt from the water a process that requires time and special machines that are very expensive. It takes alot of electricity to filter out the salt from the water and even then it wont be alot of water. Also salt pretty much damages metals which is not good on machines.

It depends on the particular hue of tan, but assuming it's a typical yellowish tan you would mix it's compliment (a muted bluish purple) to get gray. To get grey or brown you always mix complimentary colors. If you want brown you use a bit more of the warmer hue in the complimentary pair. If you want grey, you use more of the cooler hue.

Compliments are generally:

red & green

orange & blue

yellow & purple/violet

How do you remove white heat stains from varnished wood table top?

If it is shellac this may not work, but surprisingly, a method using more heat will most likely make the heat marks vanish.

1st method (most effective) : There are a couple ways to do it. Take a dry towel and lay over the heat marks. Using an iron, set it on high with steam, and let set on the towel over the heat mark for 15 to 30 second intervals, checking the heat mark below during the intervals.

2nd method : Same as 1st method above but without steam.

3rd method : Using an iron set on high, hover the iron over the marks for a couple minutes being careful not to get too close. If this doesn't work after a few minutes try methods 1 and/or 2 above.

These methods can also be varied by lowering the heat setting a bit.

What will remove old cherry stain out of carpet?

A cherry stain is a dye stain, which is very hard to remove. If your article of clothing is color-safe, bleach it. If not pretreat it, rinse it with hot water, and repeat. If the garment has been bleaching for 15 minutes and still looks stained, or you have repeated the pretreatment to no avail, the stain is not likely to come out.

How should you paint the inside of Freezer?

I usually recommend using a two-part epoxy in a walk-in refrigerator. It dries hard, is very durable and will usually cure out quick enough to limit down time. Always ask for a technical data sheet for specific directions, digest and dry times.

Can you use exterior paint on fences?

Ive painted a lot of!!!!!! I recommend using black sote paint, because it water proofs and protects the wood very well! It can be bought at most any hardware store in 1 to 5 gallon buckets.Black sote is oil based ,and there is also white oil based paints as well.White latex paint don't preserve the wood as well and can also actually accelerate the deterioration of lumber. If you have panel fence or board fence with 6inch wide board you should use a 4inch brush with very thick bristles so it holds the paint well! be sure to stir the paint with something you don't mind ruining because sote paint is very hard to get off!!!!!!!!!! Paint the top of the post and all of the post you can see and down to about an inch from the ground! If you have facer bord in front of post which cover up the crack and nails that hold the boards on to the post i recommend you pant thows last!!!!!! Now when you paint the boards DO NOT PAINT THE BOTTOMS OF THE BORD because the bord needs to breath! Paint the top and both sides!!! When you paint the facer boards don't pant the bottoms of those either!!! Try to get in between the facer and the post as best as you can!!!! You should paint the fence when the wood is good and dry and it hasn't rained for a few days you don't want the wood wet or it wont hold the paint as well!!!!!!!!! and you want to make sure you paint on a day your really sure its not going to rain because the paint needs to dry a good 3 to 4 hours after you have put it on!!!

Now to get the paint off!!! make sure you wear old clothing and shoes you don't care anything about because your going to get this stuff all over you!!! To take it off your skin you can use 70% or 90% rubbing alcohol or you can even use a lil gas if you can afford it!!! But either way you should use a dish soap something like joy is good to wash up after the gas or alcohol!!! If you get it on or in your car use finger nail polish remover and if its on the out side some thing but you should wash the spot with dish soap and water to keep the nail polish remover from messing up the paint on your car!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you use paint that has been in storage for 5 years?

It should be acceptable. You might want to take the paint to the paint store for a thorough shaking. While there, buy a straining mesh and a clean, sealable container. When you get home, strain the paint from the old bucket to the new container.

Can you use paint thinner to remove paint from wood trim?

Yes you can use paint thinner to remove the paint on the wood.

2nd Answer:

No, paint thinner will not remove paint from anything. Most paint is now water-based, anyway. Paint thinner does just what the names says: It thins oil based paint if the paint is too thick for some reason.

It depends on the paint that was used to paint the tiles originally, but usually a methylene chloride stripper will take off an epoxy used to paint tiles and not harm the tiles. Use strippers only in a well ventilated area with protective clothing and eyewear.
