This pressure sometime or other has to be released in the form of an earthquake, a severe one if the pressure is sufficient. This type of plate boundary can cause tsunamis if it in located beneath the ocean. An example of this type of boundary is the subduction of the Nazca plate underneath the South American plate. This type of boundary also forms mountain ranges.
