The main causes of the war in Lebanon was the fact that the Syrian government had forced itself into Lebanon, and the Lebanese did not like this. Also in Lebanon, there was a war between Christians and Muslims. The cause of the Lebanese civil war was neither exclusively internal nor exclusively external, nor was its settlement. The civil war came to an end at a specific historical juncture when movement toward internal reconciliation coincided with favorable regional and international developments.

The effects of the Lebanon war started with an economy that went down and was no longer effective. But more importantly, the war caused a huge damage in all the cities in Lebanon. At that time, Lebanon did really need a rebuilding situation in all aspects. Moreover, There was a great loss of people where as today, some dead bodies still hidden underground since the war. In the late 1960s, especially after the 1967 war, internal and regional changes began to adversely affect Lebanon. Internally, so- political polarization among the Lebanese increased. There was a growing migration of the rural population to Beirut, moving into poverty belts around the city, and suffering from rising inflation and cost of living. So - political tensions fueled rural uprisings and workers' strikes, and the emergence of a militant student protest movement.

Israel won the Lebanon war militarily, but Hezbollah may be said to have won politically. Israel achieved its goals, which was to 1) establish a buffer-zone in Southern Lebanon and force Hezbollah to withdraw from this area, 2) reach a complete ceasefire, effectively ceasing the low-scale conflict which had lasted since 1982, 3) bring an end to the rocket attacks, and 4) the deployment of Lebanese Armed Forces in Southern Lebanon. As a result of the war, for the first time in 40 years, the Lebanese state was able to control it's southernmost land militarily. Although Hezbollah officially denies it, an Israeli investigation shows that between 600 and 700 Islamic fighters died during the conflict. Hezbollah lost most of its long-range missiles, and the Israeli Air Force also stroke a serious blow to the rest of Hezbollah's rocket arsenal. In this respect, it's clear that Israel fought a successful war against Hezbollah. However, the amount of damage and devastation visited on Lebanon has become a public relations benefit to Hezbollah.

Several Lebanese militant groups, such as the PLO, began to fire rockets into Northern Israel in 1981 and 1982. Israel finally responded by entering the Lebanese Civil War which was going on concurrently with the aim of removing such militant groups from Lebanon.

All of the Lebanese factions signed the Ta'if Agreement in Saudi Arabia, which gave the Muslim population more power than they had previously held, but did not completely eliminate Christian safeguards on power. The Israeli invasion force retreated to the area south of the Litani River (until 2000) and the Syrian invasion force was installed as a "legitimate" peacekeeping and occupation force. (While it was legitimate under the Ta'if Agreement, most Lebanese regarded the Syrian Occupation as a hostile control over their government and finally ejected it in 2006.)
