How do you change the ignition in a Mazda Protege?
It's easier and cheaper to replace the whole distributer $130-$140 each... $200 for te entire unit. for It is near impossible to change everything individually. but before you go the $200 route at Autozone... check for the correct firing order... found out today "On This site" that the firing order may be causng. Which would explain a lot and been a lot cheaper. The FAQ string about firing order is above.... GOOD LUCK!
I have found this site to be a great resource. I hope someone on the site might have safety comments on the 1997 Mazda Protege. My 19 year old daughter was involved in a critical auto accident in which a , Ford F-150 with way oversized tires made an illegal turn in front of my daughters 1997 Mazda Protege resulting in a combined collision speed of 80 MPH. The nature and physics of this crash was deemed a "head on collision" by reconstruction experts. My daughter was trapped in the vehicle for almost an hour. My wife and I were later informed that this event was the longest and most vigorous effort that the rescue squad had experienced to date to remove a victim from a impacted vehicle. All of this and neither of the airbags were ever deployed. My humble request to this organization or any members, is to foreword or refer any information to us regarding 1997 Mazda's airbag faults if any exist or other structual or safety issues. I thank all for any expertise in this area and eagerly await a response.
Please send email to editor20001@yahoo.com

P.S. This vehicle had 55,000 miles on the odometer and had not warning light or indication of an eminent failure of airbag deployment.
Hello. I have a story with the 1997 Mazda Protege's airbag light:
I have had my 1997 Mazda Protege since 1999. I bought it with only 14,000 miles on it and currently have 146,000 miles on the car. It is such a reliable car! I have been completely satisfied with how it has held up for me over the past decade. This past year, I began having problems with the alternator. Something was causing it to freeze up, resulting in the serpentine belt breaking. This belt needs to be turning because it keeps the battery in the car recharging while the engine is running. I ended up replacing the alternator 7 times before the real problem was solved: the belt tensioner was not functioning properly. Well, the point of my story is that every time the belt snapped, my airbag light would come on. I thought that odd. It all made sense to me when my Mazda broke down again on the side of the road. Just before the car stopped running, the airbag light came on. This time, the car broke down because a battery cable was loose. I have deduced that when my Mazda's airbag light comes on, there is a problem with the battery.
Hope this helps somebody!

How can you tell if you have a bad filter or a bad fuel pump on a mpv?
The best thing to do is replace the fuel filter anyway. You will need to do it even if the fuel pump is bad, so you have nothing to lose. You can listen to hear iif the fuel pump is kicking on at all. If it is, just do the fuel filter. Its much cheaper and easier than the fuel pump. Then you can test the fuel pressure to see if the pump is bad after you replace the filter.
How do you replace a cigarette lighter in a 1996 Mazda Protege?

What is the stereo wiring diagram for a 1994 Mazda Protege?
I had to figure this out through trial and error. I'm not quite sure which ones are positive or negative yet.
Blu/Red = Constant Power
Blu/Black = Switched Power
Blu-Tan & Lavender = Left Front
White & Tan = Right Front
White/Blu & Black/Blu = Left Back
Blu & Blu/White = Right Back
Hopefully this will save others from having to go through what I did.

Please have the vehicle scanned again, and if nessisary, go to a different shop to get a 2nd opinion. It may not be the EGR system at all, it could be something else, like a faulty computer, or damaged hose somewhere. Talk to the tech who scanned it. Ask for a printout of the codes and an explaination of each
AnswerI have been a Mazda tech for 16 years. There are most likely ports clogged in your intake manifold.first check for vacuum at the boost sensor (map sensor)the nipple on the intake can get clogged with debris. If that isn't it,you have the passages clogged in the intake with carbon.you can get to these through the throttle body-you may want to remove it and the egr valve, use a coat hanger, wire, whatever it takesWhere is the egr valve position sensor on 98 mazda protege?
It's bolted right on top of the egr valve which is on the back of the engine under the throttle body there will be a small vacuum line going into where the egr valve bolts into the intake
could be fuel pump

How do you remove the stock stereo in an 1995 Mercury Cougar V8 cylinder?
u need a stereo pulling tool. you can get it at any auto parts store just ask and they will tell what kind to buy. there should be two holes on either side of the stereo u just insert the tool, and pull the stereo out. You don't need a stereo puller if you have a thick wire hanger. Cut the straight parts of the hanger with snips into 2 lengths, each about 6 inches long. Bend each into a "U" shape so that both ends will fit into the holes on the stereo. Insert both "U's" into the four holes on either side of the stereo and simultaneously pull each to the side so that the wire will compress the spring locks that hold the stereo in place. Once you have a good grip with each U against the stereo, slowly start pulling it out while keeping the pressure on. You may have to wiggle it a bit to get it started. Save the ten bucks a stereo puller will cost.
Where is the horn on a 98 Mazda Protege?
Well I had a 1995 Protege but I think is on the same place. It's beehint the right corner of the front cover. You have to remove the black cover under the car to see it. Mazda hide pretty well.
What is a code 1195 on a 1996 Mazda Protege?

Where is the fuel filter located on a 1999 Mazda Protege?
The only fuel filter on the 1999 Protege is a "sock" on the fuel pump pickup tube inside the gas tank. The sock can't be replaced seperately from Mazda, you have to replace the fuel pump which does not include the sending unit.
Where is egr valve 2003 Mazda Protege?
It should be underneath the throttle body on the back of the intake manifold
Well, deleting the EGR system is more or less associated with people trying to clean up their engine bays for a "simplier" look. In my experience, no horsepower gains are attributed to the removal of the EGR system. Of course, each automobile will react differently, but a majority of them will not be affected one way or another. Don't get caught removing an EGR system in certain states that require the system for Emissions Testing.
What is the check engine code P0171 for a Mazda Protege?

How many catalytic converters on a 2000 Mazda Protege?
Go outside, look under the car, and count them.
Why does your protege wiper linkage continue to fail?
Because rust slowly begins to grow on the wiper motor ball that is related to the linkage and that corrosion disintegrates the plastic female part that holds on to the motor and it causes to remove the linkage off, my suggestion, buy a new motor and linkage, it will save lots of hassle and time!
Where is the oxygen sensor on a 2003 Mazda Protege?
There is two oxygen sensors. One is located before the catalytic converter is located under the heat sheld. The oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter is found under the catalytic converter (under the car) before the catalytic transfer pipe.
