You need to turn this screw to back off the calipers in order to install the new pads. Since the calipers are threaded, no amount of pushing will retract them.

There is indeed a thermostat, that mechanically opens and closes to regulate water flow from the engine to the radiator. The thermostat housing is located on the upper part of the engine (front right corner), where there is a black hose leading to the radiator. Take that housing apart, inside you will find the thermostat. It's a round brass thing, about 4cm in diameter.

The 2000 Mazda Protégé map sensor is located next to the system computer. The map sensor and the system computer can be found behind the kick plate on the passenger side of the passenger compartment.

Remove front passenger scuff plate (door threshold). Remove Front side trim. There are two relays on bracket just forward of door. Front most relay is the horn relay. Remove bolt and relay. Apply +12 to terminal B and ground to D. Verify continuity between terminals A and C with voltage applied.

Dirty or "fouled" sensors at the wheel. At each wheel hub, there is a counter that "looks" at the spindle collar and "counts" the spaces and compares each wheel. If one is much slower when the brakes are applied, the system will interrupt the flow of fluid to the caliper causing the brakes to stop actuating so the wheel will not "skid" or "lock-up". If it was O2 sensor or computer related the check engine light would come on. Start with replacing the fuel and air filters.

The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank.However, acess to it for replacement,pull up your back seat cushion and you will see a plate with a wire in it.Unscrew the plate and you can replace the pump.

It is important to know where the parts are within a car. The horn relay in a 1993 Mazda Protege is found in the cars fuse box.

Frankly I don't know about your 98, but unfortunately I've been forced to learn about my 2001 2.0 ES GT Protege. I would have to assume... that your engine is basicly similar. For a quick glance look under the air breather hose that leading to the throttle body also attached is your gas pedal linkage. You will also see several metal lines coming from your exhaust manifold area over to the ERG valve area which is immediately below the throttle body mounted on the drivers side of the engine toward the fire wall. In my case I have owned the car since new in Jan 2001 and Ive put 177,000 kms to date. My only complaint about the car is the dammmmm ERG valve giving me idling problems and needs cleaning or replacing every 30,000 kms.

The 2003 Mazda Protege5 takes a 21" drivers side, 19" passenger side and a 14" rear wiper. See sources and related links below for more information. Since there are over 22 different wiper arm attachments, do not buy wipers just by length only. Be sure to lookup exact wiper blade part numbers by vehicle make, model and year for the brand wiper you decide to purchase. This ensures correct length AND correct attachment.

The owners manual on my 2001 protege LX 2.0 says not to tow with the vehicle. I would imagine a car with the same chasis and a smaller engine would have the same instructions. It is not usually a good idea to tow much with a front wheel drive vehicle regardless. That is what manufacturers want to make you believe in North America - that you should not tow anything with a 4-cilinder, compact car. They recommend you to buy their SUV or van. In Europe the same manufacturers publish towing rating for small cars - and that is one of the reasons why Europe doesn't have so many gas guzzlers. A rule of thumb is that you can tow about 50% of your vehicle weight. I wouldn't go that far but probably 30% is a safe bet. If you tow frequently, you will probably shorten a little bit the life of your engine and transmission. HiddenHitch offers a hitch Class I for Mazda Protege - check their specs. I am towing a 14" boat, 10hp engine, with my other car - a Suzuki Esteem Wagon (1.8L just like the Mazda) - about 500 pounds in total and on a good road I don't even feel it.

It is underneath your dash (although u do not need to disassemble the anything to get to this part). It is towards the back and is mounted along the other relays for the vehicle. It is rectangular, silver towards the back right. The best way to find out is to turn on your hazard and you will hear the clicking sound, you can actually "feel" the clicking if you hold the different relays. The relay that generates the most clicking vibration is probably your flasher.

If you buy a o2 sensor socket at a parts store, and you have a propane hand torch, and wd40,your halfway done. Stubborn rusted may need heat to remove. disconnect harness on 02 sensor, slide on your socket and break it loose

The Mazda radio on a 2002 protege comes out just like the Ford radios.

First, remove the two plastic hole covers on the left and right sides of the radio. They are about half and inch wide; just jiggle and pry them out. Then you will see the holes where you insert what are called "radio removal keys." On either side there are two small holes separated by an elongated hole. Insert two of the radio removal keys, one in each set of the small holes.

You will need two of the U shaped tools, one for either side of the radio. Alternatively, you can make U-shaped tools out of lengths of still coat hanger. Cut them about four inches long, then bend them into a "U" shape with the points as far apart as the holes in the radio. Insert them until you hear a click, then push the left one to the left and the right one to the right. This will depress the clips that hold the radio in. While you're holding the clips out, pull on them and the radio should slide right out.

It happened to me last week. Turned out to be the EGR valve that was not moving anymore. This valve is used when the motor is in idle which is why the motor was running almost fine when I was putting gas...

It cost me about $120 for a lifetime warranty clutch from Autozone, and then the average estimate for installation is about $350. You could also do it yourself for just the price of the clutch and a few new tools, but that depends on how much of a grease monkey you are.
