Good question! I'd like to know too. My Haynes manual wasn't very helpful. It said to just remove the two screws at the top of the case and pull the thing straight out. I took the screws out, but the case seems to still be attached at another point. What a mystery! Okay... so Haynes was right. You just have to pull really hard. Nothing broke. :)

The mountaineer has a fuse box under the drivers side dash ,and it has two horn fuses , right horn fuse ,and left horn fuse.

A malfunction in the air bag system has been detected

just had this problem in a 2002 mercury sable 3.0 and the problem was the crank sensor that sits by the injectors on top ,you have to replace the shaft and sensor both,it cost about 60.00 for both parts +labor and if you do it your self make sure you mark on how it comes out to keep it in time has to be put back in the same way it comes out... kramer2234

Any gasoline powered vehicle needs 3 things to run 1. Spark at the right time 2. fuel 3. Air If any one of these three things are missing or are not going to the cylinder at the right time. The engine will not run. Modern cars have computers that control spark timing and fuel injection to the engine. The modern computer controlled vehicle has many sensors that tell the computer when to trigger spark and the fuel injectors. If any one of these sensors go out the vehicle will not run or will run poorly and possibly stall.

According to the 1999 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide :

The fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) is in the front passenger

footwell , behind the kick panel

On a 1997 to 2001 Mercury Mountaineer :

Check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information ( VECI ) decal located in the

front of your engine compartment . It shows what type of spark plug to use

and the spark plug gap

I found mine behind the front grill passenger side of the vehicle. Its located about 6 inches to the right of thepassenger side headlight assembly, facinf the vehicle.

Start with 6qts but be prepared for it to take 7qts

Depends, If it makes noise only while turning or driving on a curve, then it is one of your hub bearings gone bad. I just replaced mine and it was somewhat of a pain but the noise went away. While driving, If you turn left and you hear the noise then it is the passenger side bearing gone bad and if you turn right and hear the noise it will be the driver side bearing . The EGR on the 97 merc is on the back left side on the intake near the firewall. I have had sucess with cleaning out the throttle body and pathway to the erg for clearing the MIL or check engine light for odb codes related to excessive and inexcessive flow rates in the egr. Open the hood and locate the air box for the air filter. Connected to this is a large semi flex tube with a clamp at each end. One at the air box and one at the throttle body. Just remove the clamps and push open the butterfly valve and spray out the insides with carb cleaner. Note, if you have low miles, under 100k, I would not recommend this, because they seal them with a coating and you may cause further problems. However, if you are like me you will have over 100k. I have 127k on mine. Don't start the vehicle right after this. Spray it out several times and and let if dry out. You can prop a screwdriver in the spring just to the right of the TB valve. It is tight to try to remove the egr in your driveway. One of the two screws is ok to remove and the other is very difficult with standard tools. If you wish to see what the egr looks like check out autozone or parts America web sites and search for egr and I know at least one of them has a picture of one.

There are two oil dipsticks one for the engine oil and one for the transmittion oil (don't get confused). Once you find the transmission dipstick pull it out, if the oil is still redish then it's fine. If it's black it needs to be changed. To add transmission oil you need to get a funnel tiny enough to fit in the dipstick hole for the transmission with the other end of the funnel wide enough to accommodate the pouring of the oil (there is special oil). Do it slowly, do not overfill, remove the funnel placing the dipstick back in place and check the level with the car running.

My personal advise - if you haven't dropped the oil from the transmission - good - take it to a shop. There is a lot of work involved with cleaning, and placing new glue compound around the edges of the pan to make sure there's no leaks.

first , remove the wheel . then unwrap the cotter pin on each of the old ball joint nuts and remove the nuts . hammer upward or downward on the top and bottom (respectively) ball joint shaft to remove them from the steering knuckle . then remove the circlip from each ball joint using ring-opening pliers . finally , use a ball joint press to remove the ball joints from the upper and lower control arms . install the new parts where the old parts were .

you might have installed it upside down or the new thermostat might be defective or the wrong temperature range

it could also be something unrelated, possibly a blown fuse

check the air charge. mabey its out.

Open the drivers door and on the end of the door ( or pillar ) you will see an

information sticker that shows the original tire size on the vehicle from the factory

Inside of the drivers side door is a sticker with recommended tire inflation numbers. Look in the owners manual for recommended inflation numbers. If the sticker is not there or the owners manual is MIA or missing in action.Go to the tire and look for maximum inflation numbers on the side wall. Inflate to 5psi under maximum number.
