Although people communicated before, like all animals do, they would also have been using sounds like singing and gestures and even drawings and carving. The the cro-magnons made cave paintings 80.000 years ago. But they were unlikely to have had anything like structured language. It was only when humans settled down from being hunters gatherers into agricultural communities that language developed.
