Odometers track the distance a vehicle has traveled. They are used in almost all cars, and on some bikes.

How do you change the light behind the odometer in Hyundai 1997 elantra?

Unfortunately it usually requires removal of the entire gauge cluster. I've never worked on your type of car before though, so I could be wrong.

How do you check if a car odometer has been rolled back?

On older cars with mechanical odometers look carefully at the numbers. They should be in perfect alignment. If one or more seems off even slightly off line then suspect the odometer has been rolled back. On newer cars with a digital readout it is almost impossible to tell by looking at the odometer. You can however determine if the mileage is genuine or not by examining the condition of the car's interior. A high mileage car will normally show heavy wear to the driver seat, gearshift knob, floormats, and the rubber covers on the pedals, etc. Things like the switches on the dashboard will become visibly worn after a lot of use. If the car has less than 25,000 miles on the odometer it should have the original tires. Look carefully at the title for the car to see if the mileage has been altered. If you have any doubts about the actual mileage on the car then just walk away.

Why would the odometer in a 2002 ford ranger stop working?

If the speedometer is still working and the odometer isn't, then you have an internal failure in the speedometer head assembly. Everything is self contained and non-servicable. It can only be replaced as an entire assembly. There is a microproccessor(computer) in it that uses vehicle speed information provided by the vehicle's data network to operate both the speedo and the odo. If one of those two is operating but not both, then the speedo head is getting the input it needs from the network, and processing it. Whatever componet is not operating has failed, but it is not servicable without the entire assembly.

How do you replace the odometer cable on a 1995 Ford Thunderbird LX?

You don't. There is no such thing as an odometer or a speedometer cable on that vehicle. The speedometer is electrically operated using a signal from the vehicle speed sensor. The odometer is driven by a little electric motor in the speedometer head assembly. If the speedo is working, but the odo isn't, you need a speedometer head assembly. If both are inop, you COULD need a speedo head, but there could also be a problem elsewhere in the system.

WHY would your Odometer go on and off in ford F-150?

There are many reasons, depending on the year. The most common problem in F-150 (also F-250, F350, Explorer and Expedition) model years 1999 - 2003 is caused by defective solder joints on a circuit board that passes the odometer signals to the dash display.

The repair is expensive if you take it to your Ford dealer because the dealer's method of fixing the problem is to replace your entire instrument cluster. You should expect to pay around $600 if you decide to have the dealer replace it.

You could also replace your instrument cluster with a used instrument cluster, but you would probably have the same problem with the used cluster. You would also have significant additional costs in having your ignition keys and PATS (Passsive Anti-Theft System) reprogrammed to work together. Your vehicle would not start until the reprogramming was done.

The practical solution to this very common problem is to simply repair the intermittent odometer yourself. The entire problem can be eliminated in about an hour using only simple hand tools and a low-wattage soldering iron. Detailed information on this problem, as well as a detailed step-by-step repair guide is available at http://www.odometer-repair.com.

How far is 1000 ft on a car odometer?

1000 ft is 333 yards, which is 0.19 miles. If the last digit of the trip odo is 1/10 mile, 100ft is just shy of 0.2 miles.

Why would your speedometer be going crazy and the odometer works fine Digital odometer but not speedometer?

Depends on your year, and likely the spedometer is reacting to a fault in the speed contoller, or fault with spedometer cable. What code(s) do you pull with testing? My 2000 E250 has an issue with the individual wheel speed sensor, causes abs light to come on and stay on, but no issues with spedometer, however if yours is newer (digital odometer, sounds newer), follow the cable from the spedometer to the speed controller, and it's bracket, check connections, or resistance in ohms. Try another question at the ford truck forum, once you know the codes.

Good luck with it.

What is wrong when the odometer speedometer gas gauge indicators stop working on the dashboard IN A 1996 MERCURY COUGAR?

It is quite possible in a 1996 Mercury Cougar, that when the dashboard instruments all quit at once, there is a fuse that has been blown. Most of the gauges in the dash run off the same fuse in most vehicles.
