I had 91 crx with the rpm needle would jump around sometimes. Then my distributor went out and I replace it and the problem did not come back. ---------- The speedometer cable probably needs to be lubricated with graphite powder. The speedometer and odometer are not working on your 1988 240dl how do you fix these problems?
First I would try replacing the cable(s). If that didn't work, I would try replacing the gauges themselves. Good luck!! :^) The odometer/speedometer are not cable driven, they are electronic
from 1986-1993. There are two small plastic gears in the gauge itself
that become old and brittle. When they lose a gear tooth, the gauge
will stop registering. The gears are available through Ebay sellers
and several online vendors. The speedometer uses an electronic sensor on the rear differential. It could be anything from the sensor, wiring or the gauge itself. The odometer may be related. If the speedo won't go, obviously the odo won't either. There is an odo kit available from IPD.

Why would my speedometer for a Volvo 1990 740 GLE wagon not work?
Check the wires on the back of the rear axle. There is a sensor there for the speedometer. If the wires break, it will not read any speed or distance. I have had to repair mine twice. The sensor is on the drivers side of the differential to the rear. Hope that is it.
Figure out the anti swaybar travel when you repair the connection to the sensor
Can you sell a car with a rolled back odometer?
Basically, rolling back an odo to get a better price for the car, make it appear less used - is illegal, a crime.
Obviously, it's still possible to do illegal things, but it isn't honest, and if you are caught doing it, you may get punished.
The way to do it legally, it to tell the buyer that the odo setting isn't right, and provide the best possible estimate of what it ought to be. If the buyer is OK with that, it's his call.
What are the units on an odometer?
Depends.
Odos usually measure in either miles(imperial units) or kilometers(metric units).
Which onedepends on what's used where the vehicle was originally sold.
With electronic odos it's usually easy to change from one to the other.
In a car odo, the last digit is usually 1/10 of the main unit.
Can a digital odometer be adjusted?
Its not illegal to change the digital odometer on a car. Any digital odometer can be program. I can program a digital odometer from the oldest to the newest cars. Some cars I need to have them with me, but most can be sent over the mail. Go to usaodo.com. All cars have either an eeprom or a microcontroller that saves it in memory. You only need to know how to program the chip or the processor and what memory to change, what to change it to. Its not cheap equipment and software, but to have it done is cheap. Changing a digital odometer is not illegal, making profit off of it or not disclosing that it has been changed is illegal.
I'm pretty sure that's illegal

Why will your odometer not work in your 88 cutlass supreme with a digital gauges?
I have a 91 and the odometer quit. The rest of the guages followed after a while. If you hit the dash they would come on. I tought there was a loose connection. I never found one. I then replace the printed circuit behind the guages with one from a scrap yard. It fixed it. It's probably you printed circuit and after a while I am sure the rest of the guages will fail.
