Depends on your year, and likely the spedometer is reacting to a fault in the speed contoller, or fault with spedometer cable. What code(s) do you pull with testing? My 2000 E250 has an issue with the individual wheel speed sensor, causes abs light to come on and stay on, but no issues with spedometer, however if yours is newer (digital odometer, sounds newer), follow the cable from the spedometer to the speed controller, and it's bracket, check connections, or resistance in ohms. Try another question at the ford truck forum, once you know the codes.

It is quite possible in a 1996 Mercury Cougar, that when the dashboard instruments all quit at once, there is a fuse that has been blown. Most of the gauges in the dash run off the same fuse in most vehicles.

I want to add to all 1994 and modern Mazda B series mini trucks that all this trucks are really Ford, all this info can be found in all the ford ranger books as well here in this forums, I am a proud owner of numerous Mazda Trucks, I still own my first Mazda B2200 1991 SE-5, and my second Mazda B2300 1998 and the third one I still own a B4000 1999 non of them 4x4. from 1994 and UP the speedometer is electrical and the sensor is at the rear differential and some automatic on the tranny. Hope this helps all of you on finding this sensor, let me add this sensor is very important so the computer can control the fuel economy of the ride.........................................

Then my distributor went out and I replace it and the problem did not come back. ---------- The speedometer cable probably needs to be lubricated with graphite powder. Don't know how to access the cable though. I have the same problem on my 94 si, but strangely, the odometer does seem to be working fine.
this is usally caused by your speed censor is gone it should be located on top of transmission drivers side of car it is the one with 2 wires plugged into it.

from 1986-1993. There are two small plastic gears in the gauge itself
that become old and brittle. When they lose a gear tooth, the gauge
will stop registering. The gears are available through Ebay sellers
and several online vendors. The speedometer uses an electronic sensor on the rear differential. It could be anything from the sensor, wiring or the gauge itself. The odometer may be related. If the speedo won't go, obviously the odo won't either. There is an odo kit available from IPD.

Check the wires on the back of the rear axle. There is a sensor there for the speedometer. If the wires break, it will not read any speed or distance. I have had to repair mine twice. The sensor is on the drivers side of the differential to the rear. Hope that is it.

You only need to know how to program the chip or the processor and what memory to change, what to change it to. Its not cheap equipment and software, but to have it done is cheap. Changing a digital odometer is not illegal, making profit off of it or not disclosing that it has been changed is illegal.

Basically, rolling back an odo to get a better price for the car, make it appear less used - is illegal, a crime.
Obviously, it's still possible to do illegal things, but it isn't honest, and if you are caught doing it, you may get punished.
The way to do it legally, it to tell the buyer that the odo setting isn't right, and provide the best possible estimate of what it ought to be. If the buyer is OK with that, it's his call.
There is a pair of gears driven off the Speedo cable. One or both of the gears have most likely broken. I have a set on the way. Sorry, haven't changed them yet, so I can't give you details on how-to yet.

I am guessing that there are a few ways..1 replace the speed sensor(located on the transmission...) if that dont do it then replace the cluster ..Dash part of it...where the speedometer and guages are..very easy to replace....20-mins tops....just remove the screws on the dash..and under the hood latch...and all pops right off..Hope this helps..
