How do you remove silicone glue from paper?

silicone glue is resistant to most things but it is not resistant to ethyl ether. Ethyl ether will make it craze and disintegrate Ethyl ether may dissolve ink on a paper so try it on a text piece first. Ethyl ether is hard to get so petroleum ether which is what is in a can of engine starting fluid will work too. Do all your work outside away from flame or sparks and don't breath the fumes! Don't use this in the garage as the gas hot water heater or furnace will make the whole garage explode It is a good idea to wear eye protection and poly gloves. Avoid skin contact and follow all the advice on the engine starting fluid can.

How do you make the rigging for model ships?

The rigging on your model should replicate the rigging of the ship you are modelling but the scale of you model will affect this and the material you use for rigging. You will probably need some reference material or guide of some kind if your experience with rigged ships is limited as sailing ship rigging can be extremely intricate and complex. I would recommend a book such as 'Ship Modeller's Shop Notes' put out by the Nautical Research Guild, edited by Merrit Edson. It has great pieces written by the likes of Howard Chapelle and good articles on model ropemaking. Try your local library and if they don't have this they may have something else that will help.

Do iron-ons expire?

It would depend on the quality of transfer paper the iron-on had been produced on. Like everything, the paper is subject to corruption and age and the iron-on may have cracked with age. This will become apparent when you try to apply it as it will either fragment or go on "crumbly" or look a bit blurred. We're talking a very long time here. Most iron-ons, if they have been stored well, not exposed to excess light or moisture should apply fine with the application of heat. If worse comes to worse and you are unsure you can always sacrifice one and test it on a rag, turn the rag inside out once the image has set, wash it, and see how it comes out.

How do you make a sky lantern?

I made a sky lantern as a school project when I was about 10... You can figure out the assembly yourself - it's pretty straight forward, but here are the things I learned/did:

- The top of the lantern/balloon has to be larger than the bottom... this way it has more "lift" at the top, which is what helps keep it upright.

- The material does not need to be fireproof - I sewed a couple of garbage bags together using an old sewing machine

- The opening at the bottom can be kept open with wire - it needs to keep the sides away from the flame.

- I used a firelighter for fuel (one of those kerosene soaked things), held in place level with the bottom using some thin wire attached to the edge frame. Note: The size of the fireligher will reduce as it burns - ensure it will still be very secure once it's smaller!

- Because mine was made of soft very flexible plastic, I needed to use a hair drier to fill the balloon with warm air before I lit the firelighter to keep the sides far enough away to not get burned. It seems the sky lanterns can hold their own shape because they are paper.

Beware - this could present a large fire risk in some areas - you should time how long it takes to burn the fuel - and consider reducing the amount of fuel used to ensure it doesn't go too far... during one of my launches, the fuel fell out about 10 seconds after launch (because it wasn't secure enough), and the balloon still traveled about 1/4 mile. Luckly we were nearby to extinguish the firelighter which fell!

I managed to make one after purchasing from a company on the net skylanterns2u.com . They were really good and told be exactly how to make, even mentioned the fuel cells are made from toilet paper just dipped into old candle wax. Just be very careful, easier to buy the quality ones like I did on the net.

There's a detailed plan for making your own Sky Lanterns at .skylighter.com/fireworks/how-to-make/sky-lanterns.asp.

When buying them in the US, always be sure and get the flame retardant ones, like those sold at .skylighter.com/mall/novelty.asp. Not all sky lanterns come with flame retardant. Check before you buy.

What is excavation collage?

"At first glance, a collage of disparate images thrust together in the same spatial plane. This is the direct result of the method employed by which a layered printed image is torn indiscrimanently to reveal parts of the image that lay just below its surface; that is to say,

apply two or more spearate images, one layered upon the other attached in loose fashion, and the act of tearing away bits of the upper image, here and there, to reveal the image lurking just below its surface. In this way the images are brought together in a rather jarring and forceful manner, with often marvelous results. This process allows, no-- encourages the participant to re-examine the motive for the action. A powerful tool for redefining the object and how we perceive it to be. The auto-response of the physical act of tearing... undressing the image to see it in a new way; with an infinite number of possibilities of discovering that magical moment the image is revealed in its new splendor" (Misiano-Genovese, 1985).

How do you create torn paper collage and mosaic fine art?

How do you quilt with Japanese washi paper?

I have just tried out a washi paper quilting starter kit which I purchased from Hanko Designs. The kit comes with templates, cardboard, foam and instructions. You copy one of the templates onto the cardboard and cut out the shape, then do the same with the foam. You then glue the foam shape onto the cardboard shape. Now comes the difficult part: you take a piece of washi paper and fold it snugly around the shape. Of course you have to cut the paper about a quarter of an inch bigger than the shape, so thatyou have enough to fold behind the shape. It wasn't clear from the instructions whether you are supposed to glue the paper to the back of the shape - I did, because it kept on coming loose. It came out quite nicely for a first attempt, but I realized that I didn't do it quite right - I think the instructions should have been a bit more specific. I hope that more or less answers the question. Good luck, Dorcas (Israel)

5 Cups Of Boiling Water

1/2 Cups of Regular Temperatured water (as this will be added to the boiling water, also)

3 Tsp. Of Sugar

1/2 A Cup Of Flour

Mix together the flour, and the regular temped water. Boil two cups of water, and after mixing the other 2 cups of water, and flour, (should come to a soupy paste) but them in with the boiling water, and mix, and then turn off burner, and let set for two to three minutes. You need to have newspaper, paste, and a form.

Tear the newspaper into strips, dip in into the paste, clean off excess paste, and then place on the form you made, let dry for a day or two, paint.

You can use wheat paste, white glue, or other adhesives easily available; add water to it if necessary to make it thinner.

What is a burnishing tool?

There are multiple types and sizes of burnishing tools. They are usually blunt, or have no sharp edges.

Hardened metal burnishers can be used to help polish out softer metal when making jewelry or any other metal workmanship that needs finish refinement. A very small metal burnisher is a great tool for making clean, precise fold in heavy paper stock by running it along the edge of a ruler, firm enough to make an indentation in the paper, but not hard enough to tear it.

Plastic burnishers come in many shapes and sizes for use with clay modeling and larger, more card shaped plastic burnishers are used in the application of decals, press-on lettering and other film application products.

How do you preserve rotting paper?

Some papers are not designed to last for a long period of time and will either be eaten away by their own acid content, or react with water vapour in the air, or will dry out and simply crumble away. There is very little that can be done to prevent any of these processes, beyond sealing the paper inside plastic sheets (a process called laminating) to prevent air or moisture getting to it.

Depending on what is on the paper you might consider scanning the text or image onto fresh paper, or photographing it and preserving the content in that way.

It is a feature of modern "throw-away" lifestyles that most of the written and printed paper material we use today will not last 100 years, compared with the books and documents of the early medieval period that were written on parchment and have lasted up to 1200 years - and can easily last another 1000.

How do you draw battle scenes?

This depends on what you wish to depict, the accuracy you with to strive for, the materials you are working with, and the skill level you possess.

First you have to have an imagination. It can guide you as to the composition you wish to create. Next you must consider your medium, whether you are using charcoal, pen and ink, etc., and what you are drawing on Often what you use to draw dictates a kind of inspiration or dynamism for the drawing and what you draw on sets restrictions and advantages towards what you are trying to craft.

Many of the best artists research their drawings. They study pictures, sketches from the actual battle and time period, eye-witness accounts, correspondence, etc. Some even study the individual weapons, areas and people involved in the battle to better render them realistically in place, use and design.

If you plan on drawing fantasy battles that feature mythological creatures or wars you can do minimal research, though it might be good to make a series of sketches of the races, armor, insignia and weapons you wish to reproduce on your warriors and their engines of war.

Why does flat paper float in air?

It's light and thin and since it's flat the air current catches it and causes it to float. The reason it floats is because it's flat and wide, spreading out, and the air is able to hold it up. Now if you were to crumple it into a ball and drop it it would fall to the ground because there's not enough space and room to hold it. It's to heavy now and there is not enough room for the air current to hold it. That's why on a paper airplane it has flast wings; so that the air current can touch taht and keep it a float.

Where can you buy paper mache paste in New Jersey?

They make that? There are two basic ways to get papier mache paste without going to a crafts store and paying a lot of money for something that's real cheap. First is the classic way--mix a cup of flour with two cups of water and stir until all the lumps are gone. The other is to go to a paint store and buy wallpaper paste. I'd just do the flour and water thing--most everyone has flour.
