What is the average amount spent on home maintenance?
Home maintenance costs vary widely, depending on your home and contents. As a general rule of thumb, you should expect to spend about 1 % of the value of your home every year in maintenance. For instance, a $300,000 home will require about $3,000 a year for basic maintenance. An important note is that basic maintenance does not include major repairs that can occur when assets like air conditioner or furnace fails. These should be budgeted for ove time. At TheProperHome.com, we suggest that you set aside an additional 1% per year to offset major maintenance when it is required. If you use a homeowner's program like our Stonebridge Home Assistant at TheProperHome.com, you can dramatically decrease costs by simply maintaining your property according to the schedule of the manufacurer. We have discovered that by simply spraying your air conditioner coils four times a year, you can add about 4 years to its life span. This limits costs of ownership and prolongs expensive repairs significantly. TheProperHome.com

Can overcurrent cause an electrical fire?
Yes, if the overcurrent is not quickly detected by a fuse or circuit breaker, the conductors will heat up from the excessive current, causing the resistance to increase, causing more heat, causing more resistance. This "thermal runaway" continues until the heat gets high enough to damage or destroy the insulation (if any) on the conductors, and deform the conductors to the point of separation. Overheated conductors may possibly reach the ignition temperature of adjacent materials, either with the conductor, sparks from arcing, or from molten insulation, resulting in a Class C fire.

How do you stay safe in a forest?
If you have a strong sharp knife you can find a slightly green sapling on the ground, with a diameter that comfortably fits your closed hand and gives you a better grip. Make it taller than you. Find one with a short fork on one end, and shave the other end to a sharp point, and if possible, fire harden the point. You do this by burying the pointed end in hot embers for a minute or two, rotating it slowly in your hand.
You also need to know what creatures are venomous in the area. You need to know what plants are edible, or how to test them for edibility, and what animals can be snared and cooked if you anticipate being there a while. You need some kind of shelter from possible adverse weather that may occur during your time in the forest.
You need to know how to signal for help with fire, signal with mirrors, if you happen to have one with you, a cd works like a mirror, signal with flashlights, or makeshift flags.
If possible it's also good to have extra clothes with you in case of a temperature drop. Otherwise know how to insulate your body with natural materials. Also make sure to have a plentiful water source if possible. If you can't do this, know how to collect water in other ways.
If you have little water, eat only a little food. If you have no water eat no food until you find water.
Do home security systems prevent burglaries?
Home security systems are more about taking preventative measures and really only help minimize the risk of a break-in or injury to you and your family. Depending on the type of system you have, you can either scare burglars away by using motion sensors, sounding an alarm when a window and/or door is broken or opened. If you have a security company monitoring your security system, then they are notified and will contact you in case you do not disarm your alarm and will dispatch help when needed.
So, the short answer is, no, security systems will not stop break-ins from occurring, but they can help minimize the possibility of one from occurring and can make sure help is on the way when you need it!

Why would your house smell like a sewer when nothing is 'backed up'?
There can be various reasons, some are: * The most common reason would be that there is a venting problem. If you install more venting pipes and two way valves on the main sewer line outside, it will most likely sort the problem out. Or, * Sewer gases are escaping from the plumbing in an infrequently used drain. The drain pipes are curved so they will hold a small amount of water to "cap" the drain and prevent the escape of the unpleasant smelling gases into the room. If the faucet does not get water run very often, this "dam" of water in the drain pipes will evaporate and there will no longer be a block of the gases. To fix, merely run water down the drain more often. Running for less than a minute is usually enough so you don't have to waste water. Or, * If you have a septic system, it may be time to have it pumped. Or, * If you have an aerobic septic system, it may need chlorine tablets added. Or, * Check your natural gas energy sourceswithin the house to be sure there is no slow leak of gas since the odor of natural gas and sewer gases can be mistaken. Your gas supply company will come to do a pressurized gas leak check if you contact them and tell them you think you may be smelling the odor of natural gas in your house.

What does a horse do when a mountain lion gets near it?
As a park ranger, I have talked to people whose horses have encountered mountain lions. Long before they could even see the cat, the horse was aware that it was there and became extremely nervous, refusing to go any closer. It is reasonable to assume that a horse could panic and run if a mountain lion were too close, potentially throwing the rider.
What should you do if you encounter a mountain lion?
Interacting with mountain lions is very different from dealing with other potential predators like bears. Mountain lions are strictly meat-eaters and skilled hunters, but they are also shy.
The most important thing you can do is prevention. The key preventative measure is to always hike with someone else (the more the merrier) and be noisy while you hike; mountain lions don't want to see people. Mountain lions are more likely to attack people hiking alone, especially children because they are easier prey. If you are hiking with children, keep them close by and do not let them hike out in front of the group or straggle behind.
If you do encounter a mountain lion, you have to deter it from attacking. Stop where you are, stand your ground, and try look as big and scary as possible. Stand on something like a rock or log so you look taller, wave your arms and with sticks in your hands if available, yell at the lion, and stand your ground. Never try to run away; it will encourage the lion to run after you and you can't possibly outrun it. If you have a deterrent such as pepper spray, that might be useful if the lion approaches. There may be times when a firearm is useful, but such occurrences would be extremely rare and should be a last resort.
If the mountain lion attacks you, FIGHT BACK. Use anything available to you, such as rocks, knives, or your fists. Try to hit it anyplace that would hurt enough to make it decide you aren't worth trying to eat, such as the eyes. If you try to play dead to deal with a mountain lion, you will be dead.
